You pose a good question. I am thinking Nice Guys Finish Last might have been somewhat better, with the "There is no I in team" saying.

Except that that saying was only in the video, not the song, and was included solely as a parody of sports since the single was released in conjunction with a football film. It's completely unrelated to the actual meaning of the song, which, as others have mentioned, is not positive or uplifting when standing on it's own. Not to mention, "Nice Guys Finish Last" touches on similar themes to "Basket Case": "Pressure Cooker pick my brain and tell me I'm insane". Mental health issues are mental health issues, and if you consider that detrimental or disrespectful to mention, than Nice Guys Finish Last is not the song for you.

The obvious choice, if we were able to go through any Green Day song ever would naturally be "Hold On" from Warning. But seeing as not even Green Day really plays that one, I don't think it's realistic to expect anyone else to choose it to cover either. That's why songs being well-known matters. Not everyone on the planet knows every song in Green Day's library like we do. And it's hard to cover a song you're unfamiliar with.

Yeah I feel like if she covered "Hold On" people might be like, "Is this some cover of a long lost artist from [insert decade here]? Why is she talking about Billie Joe? What does it have to do with him?" That's assuming she even knew it enough to play it.

Thanks for posting this vid. Wouldn't really consider myself a big Alanis fan (didn't really follow her much after Jagged Little Pill), but enjoyed hearing this.

AN audio file of this would be much appreciated ;)

That was beautiful! I'd love an mp3 of this.

Yes - this would be awesome! Is it available anywhere?

The beautiful Alanis, always been a big fan of her but this is the first time I see her reference Green Day. I would have loved to hear Good Riddance from her but I guess since this is kind of a support and get well soon message to Billie Joe then Good Riddance would have been too depressing for the occasion.

I actually really liked her version of the song. It was really good. And she mentioned Billie as well, and that was great of her

loved her version. one of the few i actually wouldn't mind covering Green Day, especially in such a nice tribute. good for her to do that

Agreed. It's nice to see somebody put a different spin on a song, like Weezer did with Worry Rock.

And yet, I absolutely despise that cover :P I do like their version of Brain Stew though.

Haha same here. It's the "hugged without a kiss" part that messes with me. Don't water down the lyrics!

The style is also sort of atypical of Weezer, who I love, but their Brain Stew cover was pretty awesome.

Yeah, that's a major issue I have with it too. Changing the words is a like an instant turn-off for me when it comes to covers. I think it also has to do with the fact that half of the appeal of Worry Rock, to me, is the 50's-ish surf-rock sound it has. So, without that, it's not as interesting. But the lyric change makes it go from "meh" to "blech" ;)

It's kind of weird/funny that they changed that lyric, too . It isn't like Weezer doesn't swear o_O. Oh well. Even if i don't like their versions I always think it is cool when other acts I respect cover my favorite band .

I thought she did a great job. I was deadly silent just watching it, couldn't take my eyes off the screen. It was beautiful.

Much improved from Avril's! haha

Wow, what a lovely gesture to use her slot on the show to show her support like that. I'm not usually much of a fan of her music but that was really touching and sounded beautiful.

Not a fan of hers but it was really sweet of her to do.

I agree. Haha nice picture Honey Boo Boo's mom!

Just seeing that cover really made everything sink in for me. It was supposed to be them on that show....yet it was Alanis Morrisette turning Basketcase into a funeral dirge. I'm kinda pissed because it was such a horrible choice for her to sing. "Am I just stoned?" really, Alanis? So inappropriate considering the circumstance. I know you can say "hey but that is one of their most popular songs that's why she chose it" but it was kinda tacky.

Would you prefer she cover "Last Ride In"? Shit, I swear that's the only song without some obscure lyric that someone would take issue with. I'm not a fan of a slowed-down Basket Case; the song just doesn't translate well. But she did a pretty solid job with the song itself vocally, really made it her own.

Espionage, dude.

Jesus Christ, people, shut the fuck up about it being somehow offensive. She could've chosen to use that slot for her own material, and instead she dedicated it to a friend by singing one of his songs. Why can't you just take that at face value as the compassionate gesture it is?

"Last Ride"? That would mean she was implying Billie's going to die soon. How could you suggest something so heartless?

Espionage, dude.

Clearly suggesting that people should spy on Billie in rehab. Unacceptable.

She also mentioned in an article that Adrienne linked on her Twitter page... That they literally just learned the song like 20 minutes before they went on. So...

I'm not the only one who found it an odd pick for a song.

And you're not the only one I'm calling bullshit on. She made a nice gesture for a friend. Can we stop overanalyzing it please?

I enjoyed that version -- the piano did throw me off a bit at first lol -- but I don't see anything wrong with her dedicating that to Billie. It's a recognizable song and I don't see her "mocking" anyone with it.

Alanis is my all-time favourite artist and the only two music forums I really use a lot are hers and, for a couple of months, this one, so this was a great treat for me and I'm so glad that you all like it even if you're not her biggest fan. I thought it was a gorgeous cover. Yeah slowing BC down is a little unusual but does nobody remember when she did My Humps? I knew a full-band rendition would be too good to be true.

And to set the record straight, a 'mental stab' or laughing after saying "we love you Billie Joe" - well, it's just insane to assume she would ever mean anything malicious by any of it. She never, ever disrespects other artists outwardly. It's actually a little annoying sometimes.

I found that her versoin of BC made the meaning of the song stand out which made it felt almost slightly eery.

Anyways it was nice of her to say "we love you Billie" at hte end of the song
