Alanis Morissette covers "Basket Case"

I really liked the cover and I think that it was the perfect song to cover at this point. The whole first verse sums up what Billie Joe must be feeling right now and this cover, like many people have said, really made you focus in on the lyrics a little bit more and maybe brought a little bit more "reality" to it rather than the fun upbeat punk feel of the original. I, too, felt both sad/happy at the end.... :S

I liked the cover, I think she did a good job. Though, only if you not look at her while she sing.... for some reason the way she sings annoys me a lot.

But it was just so sweet of her to do. I must admit, cheesy as it is, I almost cried a bit when she sang "so I better hold on"

This is properly nice. Spot on.

it's really a good cover..but she made the wrong choice

Just seeing that cover really made everything sink in for me. It was supposed to be them on that show....yet it was Alanis Morrisette turning Basketcase into a funeral dirge. I'm kinda pissed because it was such a horrible choice for her to sing. "Am I just stoned?" really, Alanis? So inappropriate considering the circumstance. I know you can say "hey but that is one of their most popular songs that's why she chose it" but it was kinda tacky.

It hit home that one of the people who is responsible for the only positive thing that helped me get through very dark times almost my entire life by showing me I'm not alone.....is suffering in his own personal hell.

It sounds dramatic but addiction is someone locking themselves in their own personal hell.

I love Green Day for everything they've ever done for me as a fan and for every ounce of joy they've brought into my life. Billie, I wish you a speedy recovery. I know that I wish I could do something for the band that helped me in anyway possible but this is probably the best I can do....posting on a message board.

We all love you dearly.....please never forget that.

I absolutely love this woman. I've been a fan for a long time. She could have easily played something from her new album, but the fact that she chose to do a cover of this song, which is particularly poignant to what's going on, was very classy. Not to mention when she said "We love you Billie Joe" at the end... that just made my heart melt. I hope he gets a chance to watch that performance. <3

I don't get the people saying this song was inappropriate or tactless. Everyone made remarks in the iheart thread about how appropriate it was the Billie had his meltdown during BasketCase, of all songs, but now it's taboo? Is everyone who covers Basket Case from now on going to be considered an asshole for mocking Billie's pain?

More than that, I'm curious as to which songs *would've* been appropriate in that case, since we know there's no way she would've covered some deep album cut, and I guess any of the songs they played at iHeart are out of question, and anything that references drinking or drugs of any kind and self-destructive behavior of any sort.....and Wake Me Up When Se[etember Ends just won't do because he had his breakdwon in September, plus that's a personal song so how dare she...

I love you, haha.

I think it was a perfect song choice - not only was it appropriate, but it's also one that's a classic that people really like and has been around for quite awhile. And she did it very tastefully/respectfully.

This gave me chills. Seriously, I found it very touching.

It ticked me off...

Here is why:

1. Billie Joe cut that song short to do his rant at the iheartradio festival.

2. She made a quick laugh after saying " We Love you Billie Joe."

3. He is in rehab and the song says "or am I stoned."

It was a poor choice in songs to cover.

All of these reasons are ridiculously stupid for disliking this. It was a very nice thing of her to do and she probably enjoyed it and found it fun.

Also he's not in rehab for smoking pot.

Not a huge fan of the cover itself, never really liked Alanis, but it was a sweet gesture and she made the song her own which is really nice. Respect to her.

No those reasons are not stupid...

I did not say he was "smoking pot".

I see it as a mental stab at Billie Joe with a stiffled laugh at the end. He chose to cut that song short at the music festival saying " I want to play a new song", what makes anyone think he would want to hear that song right now after what he did? If they are seriously trying to help him feel better and get healthy, they should not be reminding him of that concert at this time.

The cover sounded good, but I firmly believe that this was the wrong time to be covering it.

You did not, no, but you stated a reason for the song being offensive to cover is because of the stoned line, which is about pot. Billie's problem is clearly not about pot so why would he be offended at that? Even more so, why the hell would you be offended? Also what makes you think he stopped playing Basket Case because it was Basket Case? He just wanted to play a new song and was trashed off his ass.

Also sorry but are you being serious? A mental stab? That's ridiculous.

greaat voice, but it was kind of boring after a bit.....

I do not claim to know where her heart was at... I am simply stating how I percieved the behavior that was presented. The situation is serious... therefore being serious is not a bad thing.

It wasn't about the festival, though. It was just in honor/support of him. You have a right to be offended, but I think you might be a little off. Adrienne thanked Alanis for it, as well, which to me would indicate it wasn't perceived as negative. But what song would you suggest, that would similarly honor Green Day and their legacy?

I'm still wondering which song you would've considered inoffensive, given your many reasons against this one. :P

Given how fucked up Billie was at the time, I'd be surprised if he actually remembered what song he was singing at the time. But even if he did, the memory of what happened is something he's going to have to deal with cause, guess what? He's still going to need play Basket Case, himself, come tour time.

And anyway, as other people have mentioned, Adrienne already tweeted thanks to Alanis, which I don't think she would've done if either she or Billie Joe had found it inappropriate or offensive. And their perception is the only one that matters here. You're officially overreacting.

Honestly I don't think it is offensive at all, it's just a great song and likely instantly recognizable even for her fans who may not have heard much of Green Day since the 90s.

You pose a good question. I am thinking Nice Guys Finish Last might have been somewhat better, with the "There is no I in team" saying.

No one would recognize that one, though. Which would defeat the whole purpose. People would be like, "What? This isn't off the new record..." and not many people would get the Green Day reference :/.

As someone else was saying.. it's not about what everyone else would like... it has to do with him. If he is having substance abuse issues... ( they usually stem from mental health issues)... it would be better to come up with something with a positive message.

Not to put words in your mouth, but 'nice guys finish last' isn't exactly a positive message.

You are correct.. but the "there is no I in team " saying at the beginning of the video was a positive message...

Yeah, and the song was played in such a way as to sympathize, rather than to be derisive.
