It appears a good majority of Green Day fans are now girls

oi this again.

all mainstream musical groups with men get lots of fangirls. it's just the natural way of things.

This.

I mean, it is really obviously, you can't blame the guys for being ho as hell, you know?

no, but seriously; I think girls feel more related to love songs & stuff like the music that Green Day is doing now, and it is normal that girls about 12-14? think that guys on tv acting cool in front of a microphone, playing their guitars & all that are really attractive, too. cant blame them

edit: and no, I'm not such a fangirl as it might look like because of my ava & sig

Oh, also I think something else that should be considered is that a larger and younger female base is a symptom of promotion and popularity, not necessarily the music itself.

I wasn't a fan yet when Dookie came out, but my understanding is that with nearly every song off that album being a hit single, there were suddenly a lot of twelve year olds singing "When I Come Around" and the girls reading Tiger Beat drawing hearts around Billie's face. Each succeeding album saw a slight drop in sales and hit songs, which meant fewer new fans were joining the ranks (whether for love of the music or the love of being "in"). American Idiot was like Dooke-mania 2.0, and again you had the twelve year olds. But when you reach those people who become just fair weather fans, you also reach people who will be fans for life. It just comes with the territory of being exposed to millions of different people. But because you get those honest fans who will long outlast the 14 year old who thinks Billie is hot, I think it all evens out in the end.

And as for why more girls become screaming fans...I don't know. It's nothing new. Look at the Beatles.

Annnnnnd, I think partly why people are taking offense is because the way you worded it made it sound like you think the girls and woman on this board are the same as the 12-14 year old teenies. And it's kind of sexist to suggest that a girl is only a fan if she meets certain criteria (no obsessing and is a fan of early songs), but that if a dude is a fan, then he's a fan no questions asked.

Meh, I guess this kind of changed my minds on things.

But to one of the posters that said that some guys don't want people to know their die hard Green Day fans: That's because of all the obsessive fan girls witch give Green Day a bad reputation.

Meh, that's not really how I meant to word that. I've always thought that no guy would want to be seen as a hardcore fan of any band, unless it was a classic rock band or a metal band. Maybe Green Day are seen as too poppy or something.

I believe it may be because Green Day is a boy band.

I've been a fan since I was 6, and I'm a girl. I never got brought to Green Day because Billie Joe was cute.

That came later. Haha.

Some girl fans (in my opinion) love Green Day for Billie Joe, or Mike, or Tre. I've met a few that don't give a flying fuck about the music.

That disgusts me.

Also I think it's because when it comes to radio play and stuff like that, I find that there are more all boy rock/pop-rock (or whatever you wanna call it) than girl bands like that. A lot of female artist are usually solo pop when many male artist's are rock. And I for one don't really care about katy perry, lady gaga etc. all all those solo female artists who get notoriety, I like rock music, and there just seems to be more male dominant bands who get noticed in the entertainment industry than female dominant rock bands. And I find a lot of girls I know are like this, we like rock music not pop and we get bands like Green Day that makes kickass music and we want to listen to it, and if they are a band we are going to see more often like in touring and on tv there is more of a chance that we will become fans. And i feel as if that rock bands that will end up more successful are male rock bands - Good luck understanding my idea, I'm horrible at putting my thoughts into words...

Unfortunately there are very few socially acceptable things for a boy to "obsess" over if it involves other men.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Billie has said that he writes songs from a girl's perspective (One for the Razorbacks, Westbound Sign, Letterbomb, She, Viva la Gloria, atc.) so I think its natural for a lot of girls to gravitate toward their music.

But, in the last few years, I think the female fanbase has increased due to the popularity of the band and maybe becasue of their appearances. I think if this is the case though, most of those focused solely on "OMG BILLIEBILLIEBILLIE" would fade away and leave only genuine fans of the music.

Yeah, I agree with you.

Yet, while I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, OP, I also think the idea of the fanbase being largely girls is based largely on perceptions. I don't mean to sound sexist in saying this, but I just think girls are more likely to post on message boards for them. Men seem to be a little more casual about their fandom for the band (of course, we have some fantastic male posters here, so again, I'm not speaking for everyone), and women are a little more willing to spend a lot of time analyzing their music and performances.

Billie was writing charming love songs when many others at Gilman were slamming the police and questioning society etc etc. Seems pretty simple to me.

Maybe the girls are simply more noticeable because the passion with which they demonstrate their musical taste is more visible and out there than their male counterparts. I don't know many guys ballsy enough get fanatic over very much, let alone three other guys.

I wish I knew some die hard green day fans like me.

....that would be fun. :D

I don't really get why people always consider real Green Day fans as fans only if they know/like the really early stuff, I love it, but just because someone else might not doesn't make them not a 'true fan' or whatever the fuck u want to call it. And I think you hear/see girl fans a lot more because girls have always gone a bit more crazy over bands than guys (at least in a different way) we make it more obvious and we scream fucking loud...some of us just can't help it. Speaking for my self, I love the music SO FUCKING MUCH it can hurt sometimes so when I see the fucking guys the write it in-front of me I'm going to fucking scream out my appreciation as loud as I fucking can!!! It's kind of hard to not get a bit fan girlish every once in a while...but think back to all the really big bands...they have all had lots of crazy girl fans, we are an emotional gender fueled by what we here from the opposite sex, so when Billie Joe sings 'I can not sleep, I'm lost for words, I'm speechless and redundant because I love you's not enough, I'm lost for words' I fucking melt and something in me goes off and I feel like jumping. I don't know....I think a lot of girls just make different connections with bands. I love all of Green Day's songs, they're insane. I hope this makes sense in one way or another

Green Day fans are all cool. But yeah there are definitely a lot of girl Green Day fans, which is cool!

I'd also like to add that, yes, those girls who are all "OMG BILLY JO TOUCH ME!!" are annoying. When me and my friend were at AI some girl was practically hyperventilating because she touched Billie's arm and it was like

But not all girls are like that.

THIS.

hmm I've been a fan for 8 years now...and I'd definitely hyperventilate if any of the guys touched any part of my body :whistle but I'd do it when they weren't watching...lol

I never really thought about that before but now that you mention it, back in 1991 when I

1st saw them in concert 70%-75% of the fans were guys. Actually when I think back to all the

Green Day concerts I have been to over the past 19 years it remained kind of like that until

"American Idiot" was released. All I can guess is that the popularity that grew from that album

is the reason in the sudden change in female to male fans.

Posted

I know many boys who like some and even many of the songs. But i guess us girls usually get more involved or something? I i have no idea what i'm talking about right now. :P But it seems to me like guys prefer just sitting by themselves and not tell everybody?

I might be wrong, but thats just my impression. Alteast for the guys i know.

the front rows are usually filled with 12-14 year old girls

I don't know what shows you've been to lately but I can say that with 19 concerts on front barrier this tour, the vast majority of people in the front rows were at least 16+ (the majority being over 18), with maybe a slightly higher proportion of girls. Most people on front barrier that I've spoken to or seen were lining up for a good half day or more - something that people under 14 don't usually do, and something that people who only like Green Day for Billie wouldnt usually do.

I have noticed though, that it's usually girls that will camp out overnight and all day in line to get a barrier spot - it's usually about a 80/20 split between girls and guys in line. I'm thinking it's because girls (and I mean around 18yr old) are generally smaller than 18+ guys (and by this I mean not necessarily height, but also build and strength), so because they are smaller or less strong, they want a front spot not just because they are closer to the band, but they are safer, more likely to keep their spot and be able to concentrate on watching and enjoying the show, rather than trying to fight off other people in the pit for their spot, or getting caught up in the movement of the pit. I mean I'm only about 5'3, so I NEED to get front barrier or I can't see the concert.

Obviously there will always be a few teenies in the front of a show fangirling over Billie, but then there are also always people who don't know their music at the front of the shows, irrespective of age or gender.

And as people have already said before, you can't judge the whole of GD's concert-going fanbase on the users of GDC, because there are definately more female users than males.

Posted

I know what you mean. They weren't that popular before and now they have lots of teenies.I saw one recently. She is 13 and she thinks she's in love with Billie.I love Green Day for 3 years and my reason to love them wasn't their appearance.I'm not saying they aren't good looking but it wasn't just my reason,it was the music.I really don't like that little girls when they think they're in love with Billie or any other Green Day member. And I also saw another girl on some about a year ago and she was 12,she said she likes Green Day just for Billie Joe and when she had Billie there's no need for other members.Discussing that topic made me angry cause I've remembered that teenies exist.

While at concerts I did notice there were more females than males (couldn't have been more than 60, 65%, though), I was definitely among the younger people. Surely there were a bunch of young teenage girls, but I had the impression that most of the concertgoers were 18+

As for the forum, a fanforum on the internet isn't a good representation of a band's fan base at all.

Posted

I think the reason there are more girl fans these days is purely down to the fact that when American idiot came out Green Day really put a lot of effort in to their image and this continued in to the 21st CB era. I'm sure if they had continued with their image they had during the end of the warning era lots of these extra girl fans wouldn't be bothered with the band. When they did put a lot of effort in to there image it is also possible they lost some of their male fans.

Posted

first it doesn't matter if they are girls or not second i didn't like the sentence that you wrote:or it's because billie joe . i mean billie joe is not green day they all look good.

and you are right about it that most of the fans are girls :)

Well there was a fifty/fifty chance that my dad's sperm and my mum's egg was going to create girl....so sorry for that?! I guess I should be really apologising for being a girl and loving GD's music? I don't know it I really understand the discussion... =/

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think boys and girls tend to have different ways of being fans. Girls will go to greet the band at airports, joining forums and just sporting their love. While guys tend to keep it more to themselves. Most of the times, of course. I'm just generalizing.

At shows, I have seen both girls and boys. no difference.

and to be honest, at all the shows I went to I was surrounded mostly by boys.

Yeah, there are so many dumb fan girls around. haha but that happens for many bands.

As for the forum, a fanforum on the internet isn't a good representation of a band's fan base at all.

Exactly. Joining fanforums is more a girl thing.

Yup, I really don't understand why the gender of a GD fan matters. If I were a guy I suppose I'd still like Green Day's music... And yeah, Mike and Tré are just as hot as Billie Joe (even though I've never found them very attractive. I love their music and to me that's all that matters).

I think most Green Day fans are girls simply because girls are more likely to be fans of stuff. Guys, idk, are not that hardcore :D Doesn't mean guys don't listen to GD or like them.

i think it's just that girls tend to be more expressive.
