Michi1 Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Not me in this case, but my dad is actually a veteran Green Day fan. Way back in '94 or so, when Dookie came out, he bought it. Later, he bought American Idiot after having been out of the loop with them for quite a few years.
LilyMarie Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 All that has survived of my Dookie cd is the cd itself. Which is better than nothin', I suppose. My poor Warning cd needs replaced. I don't really know anyone my age in 'real life' that's much of a Green Day fan. I get a lot of 'oh yea, I used to listen to them a lot'.
American Basket Case Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 I don't really know anyone my age in 'real life' that's much of a Green Day fan. I get a lot of 'oh yea, I used to listen to them a lot'. :down:My 'real life' regarding GD is the same way, too, unfortunately.
LilyMarie Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 See, and I just don't get that. I find them just as relevant now as ever...maybe more. Everyone else my age is just old and lame.
fashionvictim86 Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 All that has survived of my Dookie cd is the cd itself. Which is better than nothin', I suppose. My poor Warning cd needs replaced. I don't really know anyone my age in 'real life' that's much of a Green Day fan. I get a lot of 'oh yea, I used to listen to them a lot'. :down:3 of my very bestest friends are huge fans. One is as big as me, he has a huge "Green Day Kiss Me I'm Punk" tattoo on his back (he named one of his sons Tre as well). The other guy is how we became friends in the first place. Then we liked each other for a long time but didn't wanna ruin friendship. My other friend loves them too but also has other favorite bands like Buckcherry. I've taken to "converting" people too. I usually make them listen, like my ex fiance who became a huge GD fan even now, after we've been broke up several years and he's married someone else. Hrmm....now that I think about it....everyone around me listens to Green Day someway or another. My bf who doesn't like to admit it, has Know Your Enemy on his CD. One of my friends, who says she hates Green Day to make me mad (we're cool like that) actually used to sing along when we were kids and drove together to high school.
LilyMarie Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 I wish it were like that here! I brought my niece to the concert with me, because she's the only person I knew who would truly appreciate the awesomeness of it.Not that she wasn't ridiculously fun go to with, but I really was wishing I had grown-ups to go with so I could have been on the floor. (She's tiny and would have been squished)Next time, now that I sorta know people here, I'm just going to meet up with GDC'ers. I've tried converting people, but they all suck. I think I just need new peeps.
American Basket Case Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 ^ At least you have someone to go with you. There's no one around here. Green Day has only played here once (I'm 99% positive this is right), and I doubt they'll tour here again.
LilyMarie Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 I pissed off a few of my kids by bringing my niece. oops. This tour was the first time I'd ever seen them live. I desperately wanted to go during the AI tour, but was in the midst of a pretty nasty divorce and couldn't afford it - and before that I was married to a fuckwad.Where are you, that they've only come once?
American Basket Case Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Where are you, that they've only come once?Kentucky, where nothing ever happens. Really.
LilyMarie Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Lame! I'm sorry. Stupid lack of teleporters. It really ruins life, doesn't it?
American Basket Case Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 ^ No, don't be sorry - it is lame. You're so right about the teleporters. Actually, GD played here exactly 5 years ago this past Saturday - and I didn't attend. *cries*
mbk Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 When I first heard Green Day on TV in 1994, they jut stabbed me right through the heart. I was 30 years old, but a band had never grabbed me like they did, and no band has since. I saw them at Lollapalooza in 1994 and in New Hampshire in Dec of 1994, the day before their appearance at MSG. Billie Joe played She naked that night too, perhaps as a dress rehearsal for the next night?I think AI sold more than Dookie too. But I can't remember 100% right now.Dookie actually has sold more copies, but that's probably because there was no downloading back then.
The Disappearing Boy Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 im interested in why some of you older folk are gd fans. and by old i mean 30+ considering gd is considered a teenager's band.Dookie actually has sold more copies, but that's probably because there was no downloading back then.i heard that dookie has sold 19 mil and ai 15 mil. but that was wikipedia.
elle1039 Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 im interested in why some of you older folk are gd fans. and by old i mean 30+ considering gd is considered a teenager's band.I'd disagree with that part actually. I don't think you can put bands into age categories.. especially ones who've been together for 20+ years. Those kind of bands span generations. I often wonder if there would be as many current teenage GD fans had it not been for AI. Obviously there are pre-AI fans who are teens, but I'd say for the most part, it was AI that brought out a whole new batch of fans.
The Disappearing Boy Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 i dunno, i think the fanbase is predominantly teen, as the thread that you made shows us, but it is also a generational band too
Jaymee!! Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Definitely more teen fans than 'adult' (what age is considered adult fan-wise?), but that doesn't mean that the band is a 'teen band'.Let's not stoop them to the JoBros level, shall we?
mbk Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 im interested in why some of you older folk are gd fans. and by old i mean 30+ considering gd is considered a teenager's band. With Dookie I think it was more uncommon to be an older fan. AI is a more "mature" album, whatever that means exactly. For me, what I loved about Dookie was the music. It was also the attitude, the feeling that you can be honest and straightforward, which was missing in so much of mainstream culture. It was there in punk rock, but I wasn't aware of punk rock before I started listening to Green Day. (I knew the Dead Kennedys, which I loved too, but they weren't welcoming and open the way Green Day is.)But it was the music, more than anything else. The lyrics on Dookie were smart and funny, but I didn't feel any personal connection to them. It's funny to me that people look to the lyrics for meaning, but if Billie Joe were a poet he wouldn't have 10 million fans. The music is just as meaningful, and in my opinion even more so. (Look at classical music. No one thinks it's empty because it has no words.)
bjrules Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I definitely haven't been a fan of Green Day for more than 13 years, so I don't really know if I'm even meant to be posting here, so sorry about this. I just wanted to say that even though prehaps most of the bands fans are teens, I don't really see Green Day as being a teen band. Bands that I see as being more "teen" are the Jonas Brothers and the like. I've been a fan of Green Day for nearly 5 years now. What first drew me to te band was simply their music, at the time I wasn't really looking too deeply into the lyrics. But later on I started to look more deeply into the lyrics, and I really started to see what a great song writer Billie Joe Armstrong is. I love the way the band started off and kept going, never giving up. I got all of their albums, and I loved every single song on every album. I just love the way that Green Day actually care about their fans, and all of their songs are fantastic, and have a meaning that is heart felt.I'm going to their concert on the 14th of December, and I've never been so excited for something before in my life. No band has ever meant so much to me, and I doubt if any ever will. Green Day are the only band that I have never got sick of, I can just listen to their music over and over, and they lyrics are so great you can really look for a deeper meaning in them.
LilyMarie Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 There is an honesty and a passion to their music that I don't find anywhere else. The feelings behind the lyrics are ageless.
SynthwaveTrooper Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 I am back and alive!I been gone awhile.... but I been busy. So all you vets out there... our day is finally coming up with Green Day RockBand. I am know I am not the only that is excited about this, wehn I was young.... I remember playing air guitar to those songs from Dookie. This gets me all excited and really brings out thid kid in me.
Iminyourcoffeemaker Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Lemme put it this way... Dookie had been out for 3 months when I was born in San Jose, CA.Instead of stories on tape or little kiddie songs, I was sitting there listening to fucking punk rock at its finest.I lived, legitly, 45 minuets away from Gilman St.I, however, did not get to see them until August of this year in Denver, CO. But man....it was worth the wait. These guys have been my best friends for 15 years and I still love them to death. No one I have ever met, likes Green Day more than me. I loved seeing there new albums come out and the long anticipation between albums but I sure as hell have loved every single one.Cheers to another 15.
Freedom to Obey Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 I've actually just made it to the point of 13+ years. Wow.
SynthwaveTrooper Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 This thread needs to be revamped! next year i hit my 20years of being a GD fan!
WorryRock02 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 well...i'm been green day fans since october 1999. So it's not really 13 years but i grew up with them. Now i'm just 20 years old...but in the most important part of my life...they are always been in my heart
jamesobxfan2296 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I've been a Green Day fan since 2005 or 2006. I found them because of American Idiot as lots of teenagers have. I later went back and listened to stuff from Dookie and I was like 'Why did I never listen to this before? This is kick ass!!!!". I remember my parents had a "No Green Day in my house" policy back when I first got into them. The only songs they approved of were "Wake Me up When September Ends" and Boulevard of Broken Dreams"(until my mom found out BOBD had the F word in it. She didn't know it did before). Now that I'm older and y parents attitudes have changed, my parents really don't care if I listen to Green Day or not. My dad actually kinda likes them now. Man I really hope I get to see their concert one day. People make out their shows to be the experience of a lifetime. I can't wait to be apart of one of their shows one day.
