There's some great stories in here, very enjoyable. I think I'll call myself a future veteran of Green Day.

well, that's ok

You have enough time to learn everything about them.

Enjoy in starting being a Green Day fan :D

You thought Friday The 13th blew Chunks?

Yes, the new one. I was very disappointed, I expected something a little different. I mean, as far as slasher movies went, it was okay, but... it's got some big shoes to fill, and it didn't do it, to me.

Not everyone is a vet.

Afraid he's right... But that does NOT make you any less of a fan, that's for sure. Just means you haven't been at it as long :) This isn't about who's better. It's an old fart thing. All you guys who are 'new' have a LOT of memories to make, and I sort of envy you for that lol I wish I could start this Green Day ride all over again

I kinda consider myself to be a Green Day veteran. 9 years ain't too shabby  I would've loved to have known about them in the earlier stages though. I preferred boybands in them days,ha.

Okay. I'll start by saying that the name of the bootleg was no exaggeration. I was 11 at the time, and it was really a struggle to even get there. I'm lucky my stepdad is self-employed and grew up listening to DK. The very first thing we noticed was how many people were there, and how hard it was to get anywhere close enough to the stage; the area was just so over-saturated with human. Five-hundred feet or so seemed like miles.

The band I think was supposed to play for about an hour, but as we all know they got cut off less than halfway through the set. It's actually kind of fitting that they were playing F.O.D when the power went out. First, Billie Joe's mic was cut and he started to look around the side stages as if to say, "WTF, mate? Someone gonna fix that?" Seconds later the rest of the PA feed went down. I wasn't close enough to lip-read, but I could see Billie holding his arms out looking for answers.

One of my fondest memories of the band was that moment; BJ and Mike were bullshit when they realized what was going on, but it took Tre a full five seconds (which is a long time to be playing a mic'd kit without knowing the mics have died) before his head began darting around confusedly in classic Tre Cool fashion. It was a free show, but these people came to see a show. It was more confusion where we were with all the chaos going on up front, slowly spreading outward onto Storrow Dr. People were pissed off and taking it out on one another. Fights were starting everywhere. That's when Chuck (my stepdad) said, "This is going to be bad. We're getting the hell out of here NOW." We ran to the Charles/MGH Red Line station as fast as we could to get back to the commuter rail home.

It was all over the news when we got home. We found out that a full-on riot had broken out and made it all the way to the downtown area. Every report, of course, blamed it on the band, with headlines like, "Rock Band Green Day Starts Riot at Hatch Shell." Chuck was pissed off, but proud. He said something to the effect of, "I'm glad you're into music but this shit? [points at TV] Never again." I didn't see them again for three more years; my next show was at Lupo's in Providence, RI, December 1998. He remembered what happened, and didn't want to take my friend and I. So after much begging and pleading, he enlisted the help of one of his buddies to make it a four-person trek to the tiny club.

That show went much better, even though my wallet did end up getting stolen. Fortunately, since I was 14 there was nothing in it but pictures. It's been a lasting love affair ever since.

that was pretty cool, took me a while to realize that was the Boston Riot show

the first time I remember hearing them and going, "what is this?!", was when I was about 10 and my buddy, who was 14, was showing me a tape of his band playing and when 2000 Light Years Away came on I just loved it. I don't remember if Dookie was out at that point or if it just came out or how it worked out, but I instantly got into them, and then he just gave me his copies of 1039 and Kerplunk because he was over them already. After that, the obsession just grew.

Then came Insomniac and there was no turning back.

By the time '96 hit, I was pretty out of control as far as Green Day was concerned. I remember the idiot club sending me 'lil Xerox'ed letters from BJ and sticker sheets. For a good year leading up to Nimrod I just kept talking about it and preparing people haha. The first time they aired the "Hitchin' a Ride" video not only did everyone in my house have to stop and watch, but I had friends on the phone too.

Life has never really been the same since '94 lol

^ now that is what i call obsession

im interested in what happened on the day of the bullet in a bible concert, do you have any stories of that? like why/how they chose to film you? etc.

in fact i remember seeing a video about that on youtube, either from you, or from one of the people you were with or something.

Well, we actually got asked to come down for the filming prior to the day. It came about because the producers of BIAB, Ridley Scott, got in touch with the GDUK website, (and possible GDA too?) asking fans to e-mail them saying what Green Day meant to them. So i did. I can't remember exactly what i said, but it was along the lines of 'i'd been listening to the band for over 10 years, had seen them live a number of times and i liked nothing more than rocking out in my room to Green Day with the music on full blast.' I got a call from someone at Ridley Scott a few days later, and initially they were interested in coming round to my place to interview me or whatever. I didn't hear anything further for a couple of weeks, and then one evening, someone else phoned me and had what felt like a mini phone interview.

I could tell he was looking for something a bit different and interesting. He either asked me about the rocking out in my room thing or i just told him, and he was really interested in that. He asked us if we could come down and actually do that on they day. I was like yeah, sure! He even asked me what song i'd want to do. I actually told him 'St. Jimmy' cos thats the song of AI i like to go most nuts too (of course!). So he asked us to get down there early on the day, 11am i think it was. I was so excited when i got off the phone.

I spent a bit of time writing down some things i thought that i would say about Green Day and what they meant to me on the day, but that all ended up going out the window on the day!

So to the day, and we set off pretty early with my mate Jamie driving (he's the guy who posted a few videos of us on youtube that i think you mean, disappearing boy.) We got to the venue about 12 i think after getting a bit lost along the way (Milton Keynes is actually quite a strange place to navigate), but anyway we went to the entrance point they told me and waited there in line with some other Green Day fans that were asked to come down for the filming and others who had just got their early.

When they opened the gates, they film crew were pretty nearby up on the hill. They got all the people who were being filmed to congregate in an area next to the camera and crew. We got chatting to a few of them, including the girls that played and sung 'Good Riddance.' Anyway, we had to wait quite a while while they went through all the people in their own order. We were one of the last to be asked on. It was a bit of a nervous wait. At one point, i thought they weren't even gonna get round to us. I walked down to the stage area as well, cos i wanted to try and get one of the red bands so we could get access to the golden circle bit at the front. But they weren't handing them out yet.

Me and my bro got called over eventually, and they got out the hi fi and AI CD they'd brought down especially for us! I decided we'd just do AI in the end, mainly i think because St. Jimmy is more of an individual song and AI just seemed more appropriate. You've seen a bit of what happened next! It was kind of weird doing it, but also a lot of fun. We really got into it and danced around singing the whole song. I would love to be able to get my hands on the whole recording. I was 'doing the propaganda' and all my own Billie Joe-isms!

After we'd finished, the fim crew were clearly impressed. They actually got Sam Bayer's attention to come over and check it out. We went straight over and shook his hand and said hello cos we knew him from directing all the AI video's. The film crew showed him a re-run of what we did and he got us to do it again, this time with him setting the camera view n stuff. Unbelievable! So we did the whole song again, and thats when people started doing the conga behind us! We got a few people's attention actually. And, i came in on time for that one!

After that they asked us to say something for the camera. No questions or anything, just say something about Green Day. Thats where i froze a bit, and just said what you can see on the DVD. I was kicking myself a bit afterwards fora while, cos i thought there's so much more i'd wanna say, but just couldn't. Looking back now though, im more than happy with what i got!

I asked the film crew after if they thought we'd make it on to the DVD, and they said we most probably would cos it was 'pretty radical!'

I was so pumped after that, and it was even greater cos Green Day were on later!!

The rest, i'm proud to say, is history. :)

Greendaytone, you gotta post the story about the premier! :D

BTW, love that part that your in (BIAB) You've got fans, your almost a star now

Thanks, i'll post the Premier story later, just zapped myself on the one above!

I see Tony is getting his own little fan club going here! Can I make a claim to be be a veteran fan of his as well? I met him and his brother Karl for the first time on November 6th, 2005, just before BIAB came out.

Ah Sharon, you take the mick out of me for BIAB too much to be classed a fan of mine i think!! :P But yeah November the 6th we met for the first time. Hmmm, what happened that day??

You know I only do it because I love you!!!! Please let me be your fan, Tone. I promise I won't wish you happy birthday 24 hours too soon this year ...... :whistling:

November 6th was the greatest day of my life (and at nearly 50, I've had a lot of days). - I ended up on the barrier at an invited audience only Green Day gig that I wasn't invited to. I stood in front of BJ and had a mouthed conversation with him, ending up by making him laugh (okay, he laughed AT me, not WITH me, but wtf? - I made him smile that glorious screwed-up nose, cheesy grin and that is a sight I shall take to the grave.). I also got a load of grins from Jason and a double thumbs-up and wink from the lovely Mr Dirnt (who was looking incredible that night, may I add). But as well as the private gig of just over an hour, I made friends for life in the queue. I see about 20 of them regularly (some not as often as I would like) and one in particular has become the sister I never had.

Spring-boarding from that day, I have met around 50 fans from various forums (Laura, Hicks, Pirate Palmer ...... just some of the reprobates that have been to gigs with me, or even stayed at my house after boozy GD-centred barbecues), and I plan to meet many others this coming year (Beth and Cheryl!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!), both at concerts and in various locations around the UK.

This band has a lot to answer for, doesn't it, Tony? And it's all good.

And yes, the picture is crap quality but it was a smuggled in disposable camera when all recording devices were banned. It's still the best pic I ever took.
