I don't see the point of them playing 21 Guns if they're already playing Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Similar songs and an almost identical live experience, only BOBD is better :P

Couldn't agree more.

WMUWSE is the other story. Billie is always getting very emotional singing it, and it is very beautiful song live! And I know it is sometimes too mainstream and a lot of people seem to dislike it, but I still think this is one of the best and most sincere songs Billie has ever written. I also lost my father, and it strikes me every single time.

BOBD is one of the weakest songs on AI (yes I said that out loud) and I don't think it plays well live.  21 Guns is designed to be an anthem and plays very well live.  BOBD is when hubby went to take a piss and get me a beer.

Exactly! That and my personal connection to the song is why I'd quite like to hear it live again.

That dark 6-chord progression in the end of BOBD is one of the strongest AI moments.

Oh, you should have heard the people in my arena sing the first line of that song, I mean, that was simply magical. That's almost anthem like even, better in fact. Still, I won't parrot what others are saying here, I don't dislke 21 guns live (I really don't like the studio version though), but there are plenty far better songs. Still, I'm all in favor of change-ups when it comes to the setlist, so...

I disagree. The song, overall, is a great song.  However, I don't think the song really fits the flow of the whole album, it never felt seamless t the story line.  If you take it out of the story, the story still flows.  However, as much as I love the song, I never got an anthem feel out of it.  Someone had stated that BOBD and 21 Guns are similar songs and we don't need both.  I don't get that at all, I think they are not similar and can both fit in nicely in a concert setting.

My big thing here is I don't consider BOBD an anthem and 21 Guns is.

Doesn't it show the confused and lost state of the protagonist?

About 21 Guns, maybe I'm wrong, but I always felt like it has been written considering the epic success of BOBD, more like a successor less of the song with its own individuality.

As excited as I am about the recent change ups and hopeful of more of the same next month, I really don't care that much what they play - BUT: if they should ever drop BOBD I'd be genuinely disappointed. Never felt that strong of a connection to AI as an album but watching the live videos over the past months it's become one of my absolute fave songs. Those crowd singalongs are about as anthemic as it gets, imo. Edit: not that I imagine they would drop it considering Billie's reaction to the crowd at several shows lately as well.

Walter White would say that you're god damn right (seems this phrase quite related to the song). I've never understood why GD have stopped playing EJN:

1) During the 21st CB era they enjoyed it so much, played in different shows, had this "child saving"thing!

2) They tend to keep the song with traditions (and here we are again with the child saving)

3) It's very energetic and powerful.

I was very happy in 2014 when they decided to play it again for the Australian leg. Have been waiting for it always since then.

But if you take that song out of AI, you still get that confused and lost state.  You get that from Jesus of Suburbia.  BOBD almost feels redundant to the plot.  Don't get me wrong, it is a great song, but I always felt that it was not an essential song to the plot.  You may feel that way about 21 Guns, so it doesn't make you wrong.  I love 21CB as an album.  There are some amazing songs on it and I can listen to it all day.  However, as a concept album it falls short.  It does not even come close to flowing as well as AI.  So, I don't think 21 Guns was written because of BOBD, but as that big moment in the story.  Sort of like when you got to a broadway musical, there is always that one big defining song, the one you remember and is on the promos.  21 Guns fits that perfectly.  We were talking about how the songs fit into a concert setting, not how good or bad a song they are.  I just feel 21 Guns is a much more fun song live.

It is his most hated GD song of all time.

As much as I don't normally care about the set list, yes you might not think that from this conversation.  I would sell my soul to the devil to hear Whatsername live.

Well, to tell the truth, I feel similarly about BOBD and Guns. Neither seems necessary for the album flow and they are a similar kind of song. I liked both at the beginning, but both became overplayed for me. I found my way back to liking BOBD, well, I don't skip it anymore, but last time I listened to AI was before my show sometime in January so that doesn't mean I'm a Boulevard fan. Guns, I don't know. I don't mind it and I probably wouldn't skip it either, but I wouldn't listen to it outside the album. Same goes for WMUWSE. That one is nothing special musically, but i have to agree it's strong emotionally.

I was fortunate enough to see green day perform BOBD 21 Guns and WMUWSE in Manchester in 2010. I love 21 Guns live. The part when they break into the piano instrumental after the solo is incredible live. However, as a song in the album, I like BOBD better.

I would like to hear WMUWSE again just because how much it means to Billie and it would be awesome with a large crowd such as an arena/stadium/festival

The top 3 songs I am really digging at the minute and would love it if they played them next time I see them are American Eulogy, Church on Sunday and Say Goodbye

Why do Green Day band members always get to hear/ see the wrong criticism. Again, what they should do, is not:

-lengthen the set, I'm well aware that it's quite long enough as is

-cut out fan favorites and staples

-completely change the setlist each show

but instead:

-keep the setlist length

-keep the same overall structure, fan favorites and pyro influenced songs

-BUT, swap out one or two songs in the middle part, only every once in a while, maybe even do a random song request, like they did on some shows during the 99 revolutions tour.

Why can't they hear these suggestions, instead of the self-righteous ones. I mean, Jeff even admitted that he'd really like to hear Whatshername, so what's the problem with swapping one or two songs every once in a while? And no, they don't owe us anything, it's just a suggestion, ok...

And yes, call me stale, but I'd like to hear some of the songs that they played on the other tours, such as:

-Welcome to Paradise

-Brain Stew and Jaded

-Geek Stink Breath

-Nice Guys Finish Last

-Redundant

-Wake me up when September ends

-Give me novacaine

-Homecoming

-Whatshername

-21st. Century Breakdown

As well as of course, less well known/barely played songs...

I've decided to quote myself from a few months back, as I still strongly agree with what I said then and after the two recent mix-ups (finally, is all I can say) the topic has become more relevant again.

Seems like maybe they listened ;)

Let's hope so, and that they keep it up, in which case there'd be plenty to look forward to in the summer!

They listened when I said pyro & bring back the catwalk so I guess they do read the threads:lol:

Those are 2 of my fave songs, would love to hear them live!  They're the first non singles I learnt to play on guitar

I do really like 21 Guns the song. But the other thing is that when they play it live it doesn't have the cool intro/then repeated later in the song part, and they miss out the "when it's time to live and let die" part and repeat the chorus an excessive number of times at the end instead, making it a lot less interesting. How similar they are is debatable I guess but they are both power ballads with a very similar live vibe so I'm fine with just one or the other. And I also just really love BOBD :P

I would loooove to see East Jesus Nowhere back. In my top 5 all time favourite GD songs, and the "saving" part is awesome.

It's a brilliant song live. As i said, probably the best GD song live in my opinion, at least one of the best. Can't understand why they don't perform it

I'm curious why they don't play 21 Guns anymore. I mean, all their other hits get played all the time but 21 Guns doesn't

No, Wake Me Up When September doesn't get played that much either. But, yes, certainly more than absolutely never since 2010 (in the case of 21 Guns). Personally, I don't mind...
