09 - Too Dumb to Die

As a guitar player, the instrumental aspect of the song is brilliant.  It has a Ramones feel in the verse with 3 punchy chords. Then the chorus rips with the big a d and e power chords. It sends tingles down my spine every time i play it!

@Maria Gloria I think I figured out what it means to feel like a cello! Before that he says he was looking for a cause but found that even things that seemed to be good turned out to be lies/too good to be true. Then, he says he's feeling like a cello that's lost somewhere over the rainbow. We were all like what the fuck does that mean??? But we were looking at that line from a wrong side. That's the point of that line! Of course it's a nonsense - there is no reason why a cello should be over the rainbow. So how does he or that cello feel? Both the cello and him feel like things don't make sense, life doesn't make sense, a lot of things don't have a purpose just like a lost cello in a weird location. But that's not a reason to give up  (i'm hanging on a dream...). It all makes sense now and I think it's a genious line and now that we know what it means, there's nothing in the way of making it a new idiom. I do thing this is what English language needed all along. It expresses so many feelings so accurately.

(Damn, now I want them to explain that line so I know if I'm right)

Yes! This is pretty much what I figured too and it probably is right. I really just want to see them answer the question and maybe explain why he picked a cello  Though I assume it was whatever random thing came to mind and that's the point of it, to be nonsensical. Cellos are special in this fandom now.

cello probably was chosen because it fits the rhythm. I can't think of many other instruments with 2 syllables. (Guess he wanted an instrument in that line.)

I love saying it.

I love this song and I love the band for creating it! I feel like Green Day makes songs all about my feelings, whats going on? :)

Thank you Green Day!

Really deep and sad.  Beautiful story teller.   Hitting the bottom of your heart.  THAT is what a cello feels like.

YES!

The greatest song ever made!

Well, actually if you try to put cajon, bass drum, tom tom, banjo, guitar instead of cello you'd get the rhythm. But you'd lose the magic of the cello. Awesome.

And then a banjo solo.  I can totally hear "Too Dumb to Die" being a country hit.

AHAHAH, maybe with some violins it would be even better.

Ooooh I would love Green Day with violins. Now that Yellowcard is breaking up I need someone else making great music with violins. I feel like a violin sometimes :) But nothing tops feeling like a cello:lol:

I put this in the podcast thread but thought I'd put it in here and expand a little.

So it's been said that the guitar part at the start seems disjointed from the rest of the song, and that there's no connection. Well, I thought this too but it occurred to me the other day that it's not that disjointed. Billie sings 'I love you' and we assume he's talking about a girl (and because he usually is, that's natural I guess.) But in this particular short piece, there's actually no indication that it's romantic love.

'I got a sentimental illness for you' sounds like he's missing someone or something and it's making him ache. His father? His past in general? Youth? It would tie in with the rest of the song wouldn't it, if it were any of these? He feels out of place (like a cello if you will) because he lost something.

On the other hand, maybe it is romantic love, but the effect makes it sound like it's far away, like in the past. The squealing guitars also are maybe meant to portray inexperience? So we could take it as a small snapshot of his past (kind of akin to him listening to it in the distance or on a dodgy record) before the song properly starts and he launches into being a high school atom bomb, etc.

I hated this song for a long time, but now I understand the meaning of it and really like it. I play it repeatedly in the car.

Both were mentioned separately in here, but I'd just like to reiterate how much I enjoy the line lyrically "I was a high school atom bomb going off on the weekends" and musically how much I love the way he sings "he said that everything will be all right, not every Sunday can be Easter"

i would also agree there is a level of emotion attached to his singing/songwriting in this one that makes it feel deeply personal, which are always the ones that stand out most to me when I can tell they are coming from a place close to his heart

definitely helped this one rise to the top of my list, right up there with Youngblood

❤️❤️❤️

I like the song. I love how Billie plays with words and meanings and comes up with things like: "I got a sentimental illness for you",  "looking for a cause but all I got was Santa Claus", "I feel like a cello, lost somewhere over the rainbow", "too scared to dream but too dumb to die", "not every Sunday can be Easter"

I love this song more and more, including the intro. It has grown on me so much since the first time I heard it; right now it's probably my favourite track off of RevRad to listen to.

Yeah I love this one too! From the first listen actually - I couldn't get it out of my head. So it's my favourite since.

My take on it is a melancholy, reflective nostalgia for lost youth.  That theme ties nicely into where Outlaws left off.

Fun to sing and play on guitar. Don't think it would be all that great live though, doubt they will be pulling it out. Maybe once or twice.

I'd like to hear it. And BOTW. And Troubled Times. And Say Goodbye. So many great songs from the new album that they haven't played live yet.

Still wanna hear the old shit! Only about 6 or 7 slots for the new album in the set. They should just do all 3 hour shows!
