RougeRogue Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 They don't compete with any other band, but rather a universal shift in musically popular genres. The state of "Alternative" is drastically different today than it was when I got in to GD for example.
Maid Meringue Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 Sum 41 released a great album this year, they are the Canadian green day. As far as any new or upcoming bands, you got me there. Adam and I talk about this a lot, there's plenty of 5th gen pop punk bands to go around but they'll never hit crossover status like green day.
GDInsaniac Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 The only way Green Day will ever have a true competitor is the day that guitars and rock infiltrate top 40 and become relevant again. There are many bands out there that are damn good and write amazing songs, but they will never rise to the level of Green Day until rock n roll takes over, and I honestly think that its gonna take a very long time 'til that happens. Green Day were the Drakes and Adeles of their time, but once a great band gets recognition by the mainstream media, Green Day will continue to be kings. *I am not comparing GD to Drake and Adele, they were just two artists who I guess are mainstream equivalents to what Green Day was in the 90's and 00's. Dont be that guy lol
tresexy101 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 GD's next competitor will be GD. I don't think they are in it to compete against bands. They are in it because they love to play music. So with that being said, all of my sarcastic answers like Foxboro Hot Tubs and the Network are pretty much true. GD just loves to play music and they can play under any band name they wanna play. After this tour they may get bored and put out an album and the band name will be TreSexy101 (I know you're reading this Bill). They don't compete. They just rock.
Strychnine. Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Green Day isn't the type of band to really have a competitor. Sure they have short term ones, like Blink-182 and SUM 41 back in the day. But looking at those bands now, neither of them are on the same level as Green Day. Green Day are in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and just got honored with a Global Icon award. Having competitors is beneath them at this point.

So I will like it because I don't read a lot of other peoples comments. Muah, just wanna cuddle with you.

When I read your comment it seemed like you were trying to say that Green Day isn't trying to compete with other bands when they make music, which is true. I was aiming to elaborate more on the fact that there isn't any band out there that is competition for Green Day.

Honestly, the facts backing this up are evidence that we're not being biased in saying this. It's foolish to ask who can compete with a band that has sustained longevity for 30 years and it reminds me of when people were trying to claim Timberlake was somehow going to become bigger than Michael Jackson, or Gaga bigger than Madonna. I don't know what people are smoking. It takes more than a wildly successful album. Longevity is key.

She and Billie are pretty much the same size.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Me, just wait till I get the rest of the band together.

Well, knowing she's not 16 and in her 20's and had many a large penis in her vagina.... I think she has a pretty face. If you disagree, you're coming clean. I'm also attracted to Caitlyn Jenner. Know she was a man doesn't mean I wouldn't date her. You can't spell Billie without Bi.

MikeDirntConfused Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 GD isn't relevant anymore. They don't have any competition and aren't compared to anyone. Around 2005 - 2006, they were compared to Fall Out Boy, Blink, and MCR. Even then, pop and rap have always been more popular genres than rap, so I really don't believe that GD was ever as famous as Adele and Drake are now. During the AI and Dookie eras, the band was very popular with teenagers and probably a chunk of older audiences but pop music is more accessible to all age demographics, compared to rock. PursuitOfEpicness Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 The Green Day fanbase clearly doesn't really care what is relevant or not so I don't see a competitor per say. I would only say the competitors at this point are Foo Fighters because they are a long running successful rock band that every one can mostly agree on are important. Green Day has had such a bold impact on my life that even I listened to another band more, they are still my number one favorite and always will be. We all kind of have that mindset, whoever does care about what is relevant then they will like Green Day for like one more month and move on to something cool like uh Eminem (?)

We all kind of have that mindset, whoever does care about what is relevant then they will like Green Day for like one more month and move on to something cool like uh Eminem (?) Relevance doesn't mean that something's not important to individuals. I play the nintendo 64 all the time and it's not relevant by any means, but I still hold it in high regards. Relevance indicates how esteemed something is to the general public. I don't understand how the entire GD fanbase shouldn't care about relevance. It's nice to hear about something you care deeply about being fondly esteemed by others. Now, if you mention GD, people give a nostalgic answer or "that was so long ago". I also think that if GD become relevant again, people would be jumping through the roof by showing youtube views and sales stats in every other thread, predicting who they would collaborate with next, which grammy they would win, and how many times platinum they would sell. Since GD's popularity has declined, people will rationalize that it's due to age, changing music landscape, and "you can't always create a masterpiece". These reasons may be true, but a lot of it stems from people making rationalizations to protect their love for the band. In the end, if the product was that good it would sell and bring the band back to the top - quality always sells.
Zelda Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I don't really see anyone as their 'competitor'. Bands that they used to be associated with like The Offspring and Blink 182 are still around, but you don't seem to hear about them as much. Green Day definitely stays relevant in small ways, like the redundant WAKE UP BILLIE JOE jokes every. goddamn. year. and the references to American Idiot when Trump was elected. They may not own the world like they used to, but the general public still remembers them. She can sleep around as much as she wants, she's an adult who can make her own choices.

AutogolazzoJr Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Green day, Please isolate yourselves far away from shitty bands like blink 182, sum 41, 21 pilots, and other mainstream music. No need to be pop just for money.
