What would be their motive It could be anything from misheard information, or trying to start a rumour to get there site attention. I don't think it's impossible. It's just another "wait and see" moment.

Green Day has been out of the mainstream for some time now I feel like, and I feel like honestly they'd lose viewers during the segment that Green Day was playing. Considering essentially the "headliner" is Rihanna, they'd need to promote this to GD/Rock fans to tune in to boost viewership right? I guess my thoughts aren't based of fact, but it's my impression of what would happen.

Plus, if you thought the VMAs were anti-rock before when GD performed, I think they've only gotten moreso in following years. Maybe someone could try tweeting one of the two authors of the posts that mentioned it asking where they got the info from. (@chartrigger, and @MinaAnnLee) I would but I don't have a twitter.
