Bang Bang is still missing a catchy chorus. Without that I can't like a song, sorry.

DeJennsitized Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Who needs a catchy chorus when the whole damn song is catchy? 'I wanna be a celebrity martyr' will not leave my brain.
thisguy3496 Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I liked both but Bang Bang was instant love
jordanlolss Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I remember hearing Oh Love for the first time and was really underwhelmed. It eventually grew on me, and I think it fits nicely on UNO, but I would never list it in even my top 25 green day songs. That being said, bang bang pulled me in on the first listen, it had the energy and message that was missing from a lot of songs on the trilogy.
The Grohl Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 When I first heard Oh Love I was not excited. I thought it was okay, but I didn't think it was a good lead single. It didn't get me excited for the album at all. I like now in the context of Uno! but Bang Bang, I can't explain how fucking jazzed I am about new Green Day! I'm pushing myself to work harder so I can get extra money and put in my pre-orders!
Ross_19 Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Bang Bang definitely! More energy, aggression, it feels more like Green Day

This will obviously be turned into trilogy bashing again, and I think that was the actual intention of this thread. And that's bullshit. If we're comparing songs, why not put all the first singles they've released and then compare them to Bang Bang (even though it's kind of pointless)? We have Longview, Geek Stink Breath, Hitchin' A Ride, Minority, American Idiot, Know Your Enemy and Oh Love. 1. It wasn't at all my intention to bash the trilogy, I just wanted to know if after the mostly positive feedback concerning Bang Bang, people preferred it to Oh Love, as a single. In my opinion, Oh Love isn't an inherently bad song, but I don't think it's a good first single, it didn't catch my attention as quickly as Bang Bang did. And I agree that they are two very different songs. 2. Not a bad idea, but I wanted to specifically compare the most recent two, especially after the mixed reviews and bad sales of the trilogy.
Dakke Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Two totally different songs, but in my opinion Bang Bang has the energy and emotion we've come to expect from a Green Day song, making Oh Love coming over as dull and uninspired.
Chanderson Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I chose Bang Bang. Although I don't see it being a song that will knock Bored To Death off the airwaves, it's more musically intriguing than Oh Love. Every time I listen to it, I find new things that I may have not caught the first time, and with every listen it gets better. On first thought, it just sounded average, but after 10 plays it really grew on me. Oh Love was more of a song that once I heard it, I knew everything I needed to know about it. From a marketing stand point, they should have chose a catchier, more radio-friendly song to get back in the public's ears. Still doesn't change the fact that Bang Bang is bad ass, and probably the best leading single since American Idiot.

It has a much more modern structure than other Green Day stuff, it leans on the refrain for the hook more than the chorus. "I wanna be a celebrity martyr" comes in pretty catchy to my ear. I think it's rather clever how the chorus has that refrain added half way through the song, definitely a step above anything (as far as song structures go) they've really done to this point as Green Day. It's a more popular thing to do in hip hop or trap but it makes for a really interesting song with pop punk

And that weird mid part slows down the song too much. I like how NOFX do it. Start with a verse and then switch to an awesome chorus
Harry Potter. Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 the structure really positively surprised me. when i heard it was a "pick up and play" 1-2-3-4 punk rock type song, i thought it would be like the trilogy. the "celebrity martyr" refrain really sets it apart though. thanks to that it's more nuanced and has an increased replay value.

I kind of get what you're saying. Yes, on first listen I didn't get that catchy chorus you're talking about, but after a few listens it became contagiously catchy. "I want to be a celebrity martyr / The leading man of my own private drama / Hurrah, Hurrah, the hero of the hour / Daddy's little psycho and mommy's little soldier"
falconsroach7 Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I remember being let down by oh love. It was a fine song, sure, but it did absolutely nothing to inspire me. It felt too bland and a tad generic to really impact me, but bang bang seriously blew me away. I felt more power and emotion and it did what a lead single is supposed to do: leave me wanting more
PullingTeeth Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Oh Love is fine, the only thing that excited me about the song and the trilogy probably was the guitar solo. Bang Bang is much more catchy imo and the lack of structure really fits the theme and the sound, it really creates chaos.

Verse/Chorus is old news. Songs nowadays are built to have at least two vocal hooks, like Bang Bang. The chorus happens at the same time as always, but the refrain is saved til the second half (and is still done 2x, so you're missing one hook max vs. a standard song structure).
RedundantIdiot Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I've just listened to both songs and I prefer Bang Bang. Oh Love is probably the more radio-friendly of the two songs, but Oh Love is a bit too long and bordering on repetitive. Also, Bang Bang excites me and it makes me want to listen to Revloution Radio, Oh Love didn't do that for me and the Trilogy.

Well I think it's obvious that I don't like this modern stuff.
DookieLukie Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 So Seagull doesn't like music that strays from the typical pop music formula. I mean, it makes sense since he hates AI, doesn't like Bang Bang, and worships Katy Perry. Dude, if you don't like music that isn't traditional 4/4 Verse/Chorus then you're missing out on a TON of amazing music.

I don't like this first single that much, so what, get over it. Jeez!
