What the fuck happened to Jason White?

I think Jason probably contributes more live than in the studio because BJ is always busy getting the audience going and so Jason White is there to play the guitar. BJ doesn't need to do that in the studio

Jason is much more skilled guitar player. Maybe that's why they never played Dirty Rotten Bastards live, Billie can't follow him.

Well DRB isn't necessarily difficult, I doubt even when Billie was cooked he wouldn't be able to play the rhythm section as Jason could quite easily play the solo. + It is of course a "harder" Green Day song but I'd say Jesus of Suburbia is only just a bit more difficult.

and ANOTHER THING!  GDA needs to get their crap together and TAKE JASON WHITE OFF THE BACKGROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Green Day are back to a three piece now.   While they are at it why don't they kick Tre to the curb and get John back, make this REAL old school Green Day instead of a few years ago Green Day........

I'm just joshing.....although I am upset that Jason's not "official" anymore.  I was hoping they would let him in, let him write some tunes.....not changing Green Day's sound but I think he could have added something to the table.

Maybe Pinhead Gunpowder will do something in 2017 or 2018.   Or maybe I should shut up and go download California's album or the Big Cats album or really dig deep and find some Numskuls or Monsula to listen to.

This album is stripped down, alright.   Perhaps on Album 13 they will not only bring Jason back but allow all of the Big Three to join in officially.    The Green Day Band from Oakland California.    Everyday is their birthday.

BANG BANG

Jason didn't play on any of Monsula's records though.

That's how deep I'm digging!

I dug deep as in I right clicked where you typed Chino Horde, googled it and am watching clips on youtube now.     I'll see what happens.

So because Green Day fired Jason White (I'm exaggerating a bit) I went in search of all the Jason White music I could find.    Chino Horde sounds promising, as do most of the bands I'm researching.....here's a cool video I found.  Jason starts at the 12:00 minute mark.

The man has been ill maybe he didn't want to be part of the recording process, maybe he was going through treatment when they started putting the album together so wasn't avaiable, who knows, tbh I don't really care, I am sure he'll be on stage with them, it's a band decision.

Jason is a great guy. I'm just glad he is still involved with Green Day with their tour.

Did you actually watch Control?!

Did you actually hear what Billie said about Jason playing with them since 1999 and WHY he was now being considered the fourth member?

There was nothing whatsoever tongue in cheek about it.

I think the recent tweet on IheartRadio where Mike said '..the root of GD has always been Billie, me, and Tre getting a room & jamming....' says it all.

I don't think Jason White was ever officially in the band.

JW needs to bring back The Influents. Hopefully he starts working on his own projects again!

Have you listened to his new band California? They're awesome.

During the trilogy he never even promoted with them. Not a single interview or magazine photoshoot. This is not being an "official member". If I'm not mistaken they never called him "official member" but the "4th member", something similar to the "5th beatle" thing. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I think they have it as a pretty natural thing. Jason doesn't expect to have the same relevance as the 3 of them and they feel like the 3 of them is the natural Green Day squad. From time to time they see a opportunity to include him on specific events (like the trilogy or music videos -- I see his recording on the trilogy more of a reward-gratitude kinda thing) because for God's sake he's been their tour guitarist for 17 years. :P Also I feel like they wanted to be much closer on this record (small studio/self production) and it might have been much easier with just the 3 of them.

There are lots of irritating habits Green Day fans seem to display online but deciding for themselves or between themselves that their own opinion on some fact related to the band supercedes a band members intention or opinion is beyond frustrating. It's as though the fan or fans are saying "we know you did or said blah but you didn't mean it you were only joking or you really only meant blah".  It's patronising to say the least.

Regarding Jason, it's beyond me why there is still a debate over him being an "official member" or indeed why there ever was. Yes it's hard to swallow since there was no official ceremony, no baptism by fire however, Billie Joe Armstrong of the band Green Day said he was the fourth member, more than once. Jason was then featured in music videos such as Oh Love, Let Yourself Go, Nuclear Family and Stay the Night. Anyone who purchased physical copies of Uno, Dos, and Tre will see his name listed in the credits with the band as a member and he has several individual photos as well as being featured in the group shots throughout the three albums.

If he wasn't the fourth member he is the world's greatest photobomber and Warner didn't get Billies "joke" about him being not really an official member but just saying he was because that was funny somehow? :shy::shy::shy::shy::shy::shy:

This whole thread seems to be people saying "I have no idea why this is even a debate," and then they go on to debate the topic even more

Now that I'm thinking about it, he never played on any albums before so......I guess this is fine.    Jason Freeze has been on one album....I found some cool thing while looking at additional musicians on Warning.   Worth going to a few peoples wikipedia pages and reading about them.

Wasn't he a part of the Stevie Van Zandt radio show.  He might not have said anything but I thought I remember him being on stage with all of them.  (Or was that not for the Trilogy?!!)

He was! That was an interview where Billie, Mike and Tré were all blonde :D but that was in 2011 I guess and they didn't mention anything about future releases so it wouldn't really count as promoting... It's his only interview with them I remember

Thought so.  I always remember it because van Zandt called Billie out for only listening to his show on replay rather than live (because of the time difference coast to coast, I guess).  Thought that was a pretty assholey thing to say.  Really bugged me to remember it so well.  :P

And that Jason pretty much just sat there holding a mic!

I love that Mistress Simone is credited in the Warning notes.

Jason played sax on Homecoming too

We're the Green Day band from Oakland, California.   And we are many!  Here are all the people who appear on green day records:   (there are a few others on other Green Day releases, like live albums, broadway musicals, etc.  but this is everybody from the studio albums.      Interestingly enough, Jeff Matika is the only member of the "big three" to not have been on an album.   He's been on the live ones though.   Enough rambling, here's who Green Day actually are.

Billie Joe Armstrong – lead vocals, guitar, drums, harmonica, mandolin, piano, rhythm guitar,

Mike Dirnt – bass guitar, backing vocals, baseball bat, farfifsa, lead vocals,

Tre Cool – drums, percussion, backing vocals, lead vocals, guitar, bongos, tambourine,  accordion

Al Sobrante – drums

Petra Haden – Violin

Conan Mccallum – Violin

Gabrial Mcnair – Horns

Stephen Bradley – Horns

David Cambell – Strings Arranger/arrangements

Bemont Tench – guest vocals

Gary Meek – Saxaphone

James Creepies – Saxaphone

Rob Cavallo – pinao

Jason Freeze – saxophone, piano

Kathleen Hanna – Guest vocals

Tom Kitt – String arrangements, horn arrangements,

Pastrick Warren – String Conducting

Jason White – Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, backing vocals

Very good, but don't forget ol' Timmy Chunks who used to fire up the crowd by playing power chords on Blue between set changes before their shows circa '9?-2000, not to mention a stellar acting job in the Good Riddance video!

In all seriousness, I saw Timmy play guitar backup during King For a Day at shows from '98-00 when Mcnair and the other guy were playing horns. If we include live/ session players he must be included!

EDIT: I see that you included studio contributors only. But seriously...it's Timmy! And, of all the things I could ask Billie and the gang about, it would be...WTF is Timmy up to these days? Hopefully they took care of the guy- I have no idea why he would have left such a sweet gig. Although he did seem a little unstable...

Live musicians gets tricky.   There are just so many and it messed up my OCD list making tenancies.  I remember seeing them live in 2005 and loving the six-man line up during that show.    It was....I want to say it was six of them but it looks like they had 7 during the American Idiot tours.    it was their 2005 North Carolina show.

I know Freeze and White, but is the third guy Ronnie Blake or Pelino?   Pretty sure it's Blake.

Back in 2005 I thought it would be awesome if those guys joined Green Day officially.     Maybe that's why I'm so butt hurt about Jason stepping down / getting demoted.  The six of them (plus Pelino possibly?)  Simply put on the best concert I've ever seen.   I went with my dad and a girl from work and neither of them had any strong feelings about Green Day, but all three of us left saying it was the greatest live concert any of us had ever been to.      But 11 years have gone so fast (wink) and now we've got a tight little 3 piece, and that's fine.   Perhaps in the future we'll get an official six piece Green Day and I wouldn't mind at all.    Blake isn't with them anymore and now Matika is sixth man on the totem poll.

Billie

Mike

Tre

Jason White

Jason Freeze

Jeff Matika

I guess the Foxboro Hot Tubs and the Network are the closest thing you can get to a six-piece Green Day.   So there's that.

It's Freese not Freeze just fyi. Why does it have to be so black and white? What if they wanted things to be flexible so that he's in the band but his role can change according to what works them at the time? He hasn't necessarily stepped down/been demoted from anything, could just be it suited all of them for his role to include playing on the album last time but not this time. And given that he's had cancer and been fronting another band it's likely it was what suited him more than anything. Maybe next time circumstances will mean playing on the album will be on the cards but either way he's still in the band and still going to tour the world in it. Not much need to be sad when for all we know things might be exactly how Jason wants them.
