I always buy Kerrang through eBay because I don't know of anywhere that sells it in the U.S.

BJ has said in this 2009 interview for 21CB around 6:20 that H&H was recorded about 5 years ago, so in 2004 the same year as AI. Idk if it was intended to be on AI, maybe they were gonna put it on C&V

Billie wanted to leaveHorseshoes and Handgrenades off the record but Butch Vig told him to keep it on there. I also remember that Billie wasn't sure if 21 Guns should be on the record but put it on last minute. I remember that from press around the release of 21st Century Breakdown.

Haven't heard that. I know he was going to leave off Give Me Novacaine but Adrienne told him to keep it so he did (there's a video of him saying so on stage somewhere), maybe it was that?

Yeah it was 21st CB that H&H was nearly left off, just because he started writing it before American Idiot doesn't mean he "left it off" it. I didn't remember that about 21 Guns but Drama Queen was taken off and replaced with Murder City right at the last minute, it was so late they'd already released a tracklist with it on and described it in interviews. I guess they'll change things about an album if they think it's needed however late on it is.

Yes I remember an interview where Billie said that Butch Vig basically made him put Give Me Novacaine and Horseshoes and Handgrenades on the album and he really hadn't wanted to. I remember being like wtf Billie Give Me Novacaine is awesome what's your problem?!  But then in subsequent interviews he has said it's the hardest song to sing and it reminded him of a really dark place he'd rather not go to so then I was like fuck you Butch Vig  I also remember the shocked look on Billie's face when they were on a BBC radio show (it had video) and the dj asked which song summed up the album and Tre said Horseshoes and Handgrenades. Billie looked disgusted  I reckon he just really didn't like those songs but went along with the producer. Maybe that's partly what he meant in Kerrang by "producers doing way too much making the process perverted".

Wait... Butch Vig wasn't their producer for AI, the album which GMN came from... What you talking about?

I'm glad Murder City is on the album instead of Drama Queen. I don't really like DQ and I definetely don't think it would fit on an album like 21CB

@Hero_Of_The_Hour means Restless Heart Syndrome (very similarly themed song to be fair), I also remember Billie saying he was basically done with it and didn't want to listen to it after it was finished as it had been draining to record. I remember the interview where Billie was amazed by Tre picking H&H as a favourite too , good thing he listens to other people's advice about which songs to keep sometimes I suppose.

I think it was probably a different version of Drama Queen, there were articles about the album that described the songs and I don't remember them saying it was acoustic so I assume it wasn't. Billie said at the time it was about how young female celebrities are creepily exploited by the media industry/their families, I think it could've fit along with the other social commentary on the album.

I don't think Billie looked disgusted when Tré said H&H. Just a bit shocked maybe. But H&H and RHS are my favourites from the album, so I'm glad they were included. But I mean, BJ was fine with putting WMUWSE on AI which is probably the most personal song of his, so I don't see why he wouldn't have put RHS on 21CB

EDIT: Also, if BJ didn't even want H&H on the album, why did he name one of the Acts Horseshoes & Handgrenades?

I don't know if it was necessarily because it was personally painful due to the subject matter, don't know the exact quote but I believe from the way it was put he might have just meant the recording process itself was difficult and draining and he'd had enough of the song for that reason. In interviews at the time they said a lot about the process of making the album being quite a struggle and on the miserable side at times so that would go along with it. Not sure he even made the comment in relation to nearly leaving it off, that might've just been because he didn't think it was one of the stronger songs.

I mean, it was the same lyrics (Billie played it before Good Riddance at a few 21st CB tour shows), and they only played it acoustically, but I assume that was just because they were fitting it in during the acoustic part of the show. With it being such a different sounding album to the trilogy I'm thinking it must've sounded quite different, I'd be really interested to hear it too.
