I really hope Rolling Stone got to go into the studio for a day or two during the recording, like they did with 21CB. And then boom... out of nowhere we get an article talking about demos, environment, the band, etc.

With 21CB, I think that got published 4-5 months before the album's release date.

Ahh that was great, still remember how exciting it was!

Would most of you rather it be political? I kind of do, I feel like they write so passionately about that stuff. Plus you know certain idiots in the running right now.

I'm up for hearing them write about whatever they feel passionate about whether it's political or not, but yeah since it seems they're very passionate about all the political stuff going on at the moment I do hope so! Can't really see how it would be possible for Billie not to include some thoughts on the situation in this album.

My worry about a purely political album is it will be viewed as American Idiot 3.0. I really don't know where they go as a band at this point. As long as it sounds fresh, I'm on board with whatever they release.

I think short sighted people will always compare anything that Green Day writes in a political sense with American Idiot.

I know people have said it before, but with the absolute turmoil the US is in, politically, I just don't see how there isn't at least a part of the album that is political.  Billie has always written about what he feels and based on some of his instagrams I'm pretty sure he is feeling it like most others in this country.  He is just better at putting it down on paper.

Yes because the way he wrote American idiot, it was political and personal to him, but written in a way that was relatable on some level to anyone.  That's the genius of his lyric writing.

Probably the reason why Dookie and AI did so well, as they both were written from a personal level but relatable to a huge group of people

Just because the theme is slightly similar? There's bands who almost only write about politics and their albums aren't viewed as all being the same. And anyway, I'm not sure if 21st is considered political by most people (the singles weren't too political).

Its about a relationship, using the 21 gun salute as an allusion. Not political

No it is about patriotism and what the 21 gun salute represents

it's like a mirror world! it got sort of "dual identity"

That's why it's a great song, it has layers of meaning; people can attach their own meaning.

Each to their own I guess. I mean it's fine if people see different aspects of a song or set a different focus on certain topics as a lot of lyrics lead to speculation in some way or another and interpretation is not limited to any rules but interesting to hear and share. :)

Yes  the songs are definitely open for interpretation: my 16 yr old son is not  really into Green Day very much (he  doesn't like my 'jangly pop punk with sing along melodies'). But of all songs to catch his attentionn, 'Nightlife" came up while I was playing Trilogy Cds in the car, and he listened very intently and said, "The words are really good on that one, it's like he has a split personality, and the girl is his bad side..."   Interesting interpretation...kind of a female St. Jimmy.

It would be a long shot, but the lollapalooza lineup should be coming out sometime within the next couple weeks :shy:

True. Can't argue with that.

I think 21st Century Breakdown is a more political record that American Idiot. On AI you have the title track and Holiday. 21CB had the title track, Know Your Enemy, East Jesus Nowhere (more against religion, but still) Peacemaker, Restless Heart Syndrome, The Static Age, 21 Guns and American Eulogy.

I just think it's interesting to see where they go. 21CB was viewed as a weaker AI in the public's eyes. Curious as to how a new record will be received if it's strictly political.

Didn't Mike comment on someones anti trump Instagram saying something like, "true but think about how much great music was inspired by Ronald reagan"

I was wondering, where did go all the people who have said that have friends working on stuff related to Green Day and could try to get some inside info about the new record? I miss those especulation days of the past month...

Green Day world is too quiet this march, and it is bothering me

This a million times :runaround:

This could be a good sign though. Busy = quiet.

Green day changed the "tour" section of their website to "shows" this could be a sign of an upcoming single concert announcement, without people expecting that it has something to do with a tour. Or I am just over analytical.

Edit: Im wrong it's only on their mobile site

Well to be fair as you said East Jesus Nowhere isn't political song it's about religion so it doesn't count, Restless Heart Syndrome is about his addiction don't know why you'd include that and Static Age is more about what's happening in the world more than what's happening in politics.

I guess you could interpret those tunes another way. Still, more tunes than AI that are "political" if we're going to really get technical here.

I just think 21CB talks more about the current state of affairs than AI. I'm not even sure what point I'm trying to make anymore :)

Ah yeah i totally get that point and agree with you that 21st is certainly a political album more than AI is.

I signed up for email updates on greenday.com and the email verification message I got said (this is copy/pasted:)

"You'll be one of the first to hear about their upcoming tour dates, video premieres and promotions!"

I like the sound of that word "UPCOMING"  yaaaaaaaay
