Brooklyn Baby Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 For people who were around for the 21CBD hype, how do you feel the fan energy right now compares to that? Since 21CBD was the follow-up to American Idiot, I imagine expectations were quite high when rumors about a new album started. To me, there's a lot less chatter in the world outside of GDC, but the fans who ARE talking are more invested in whatever this album may bring than they were in, say, the Trilogy because this time around we're hoping to see Green Day recover and successfully come back from a fairly embarrassing time in their history.

Giving attention to Instagram trolls only encourages more trolling. And every time a member of the band posts something, there doesn't have to be a "deeper meaning" behind it — if they aren't explicitly mentioning the new album or recording process, odds are it's just them living their lives and posting on social media. I'd love to have an actual conversation in this thread about expectations for the new albums, but instead it's muddied by constant "OMG THAT GUY'S THUMB LOOKS LIKE BILLIE'S!!!!" posts and it's getting old fast. 15 minutes ago, Lady Nightlife said: For people who were around for the 21CBD hype, how do you feel the fan energy right now compares to that? I forget that, provided nothing bad happens this time around, this will be my first experience with a proper album promotion. I didn't follow the band before American Idiot, I didn't really care when 21CB came out (busy with graduating high school, going to college, etc. at that time), and the trilogy was, obviously, a huge flop in terms of its promotion and tour. I honestly have no idea what to expect this time around. This is also the first time they're releasing an album since before American Idiot that doesn't coincide with a time when I'm getting ready for a graduation, since the trilogy came out my last semester of college. Technically American Idiot came out when I was graduating from eighth grade too, haha.

In my area people started to know Green Day with 21 guns. The only song that my friends knew was that one and they loved it. I have never seen hype about them in my area before or after. Sometimes i think green day made that song for non-english speaking countries My friends didn't even care about Jesus of suburbia but it was all about 21 guns for them. It's weird seeing that and seeing the hate for 21 guns or 21st cb.

localinsomniac Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 For me, it's apples and oranges. I'm cautiously optimistic about this next record, whereas with 21CB I was practically shaking in anticipation by April that year. Breakdown represented the follow up to what was arguably Green Day's most commercially successful album, sales numbers not withstanding. There was a buzz with it because people wanted to see the approach they would take after producing such a massive hit. While it was a wonderfully diverse album, in my opinion, I think – after five years and in the wake of American Idiot – it ultimately failed to meet a lot of people's expectations. It was almost doomed to meet such a fate, because how can you expect to outdo a once-in-a-generation-piece of art like AI? I think a lot of people would agree that, no matter how much you like or dislike the trilogy, it was a failure overall. There was little to no quality control; it might have been overly ambitious, even for Green Day; the iHeart tirade and BJ'ssubsequent rehab pretty much squashed the promotion. The staggered release schedule was disappointing to me, personally. On the one hand, it was cool that we were getting three brand-new Green Day albums in a three- (originally four)-month span but on the other hand, we all had to shell out 10 or 12 bucks each time. Maybe somebody can correct me if I'm wrong on this, but hopefully that was Warner's doing rather than the band's. It counted as one album under the terms of their contract, but if I'm not mistaken each one had its own Nielsen numbers. I'd like to think GD have learned a thing or two from the way the last album cycle unfolded, scaling it back this time around with something leaning a bit more toward the traditional. I absolutely would not be opposed to some kind of concept record, if not necessarily a rock opera.

Really great analysis, and I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I was a fairly casual fan when 21CBD came out, and interestingly enough, 21CBD felt like the perfect follow-up to AI for me. I understand why it didn't sell like AI, but as a member of the target demographic for the album, I loved it and it's easily one of my favorite albums (not just favorite GD albums, it's one of my favorites, period). I always wondered if my disappointment over the Trilogy was partially because I was a bigger fan of the band and had much higher expectations/experienced the hype more intensely than I did for AI/21CBD, and then the Trilogy just was substandard all around. I'm trying not to get too excited over their next album for that reason, although I hate feeling like I have to manage my expectations for Green Day.

I think he was just talking about a title for the video. GDC already named a Green Day album (someone on here came up with the idea to hold up "awesome as fuck" signs at a show, people did it, the band saw it, liked it so much they tweeted about it, and then decided to name the live album of the tour after it ), but I think it's a bit early to ask us when they haven't even made the album yet
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 They'll name it Armageddon. I already told them.
Michael Highway Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 And we'll be ordering them like an Armageddon flame...a shame...the ones who bought without a damn... My best and only Holiday reference so far

I honestly don't remember what the vibe was like leading up to it, but i remember when it came out i was pretty impressed because that band had kinda lost me with american idiot. AI came out at a time where i was super jaded and i only liked 2 or 3 songs off it, but it's grown on me a lot. 21st came out when i was pretty involved in the underground pop punk scene and there was a ton of great new music coming out all the time, so new green day at the time was just kind of a bonus rather than some huge thing for me. i think i was actually more excited about the trilogy coming out because the underground scene had so many awesome bands breaking up and not as much new music was in my life. i'm pretty invested in this next album though, the underground pop-punk scene is kind of in a lull right now so i definitely need a new music fix

"I am Green Day" - Billie Joe Armstrong BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG POSTS PHOTO WITH WILL.I.AM: COLLABORATION COMING? Is Green Day getting ready to scream, and shout, and let it all out? Jason Lipshutz February 2, 2016 Green Day is very likely back in the studio, based on frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s recent studio pic. Green Day also might be working with Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am, based on Armstrong’s latest pic. Is this the E.N.D. of pop-punk as we know it? To be fair, the Monday night photo could be totally innocent (gotta love that “Bill and Will” caption!), and it’s hard to tell where the two music stars snapped the shot. Maybe they were just grabbing a bite to eat and discussing how great the mid-‘00s were! If you haven’t heard, Armstrong called for the end of the term “pop-punk” at the end of 2015, days after Green Day dropped a surprise Christmas tune. There’s a chance that the band drops the pop-punk and picks up the Elephunk. http://www.fuse.tv/2016/02/billie-joe-armstrong-will-i-am

rootbeersoup Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I think it's high time they released their rock opera based on GDC drama. Long overdue.

Sanity Loan Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The nice thing about FUSE writing that is that people are still interested in Green Day and give a damn to write/read an article that speculates.
