I don't get it. Do you like filtered vocals then or not?

Also I'll just leave this monstrosity here.

It depends on teh song.  For this Christmas song, it was too much.

I don't mind it when it's not excessive and makes him sound robotic. As for the AI isolated vocals, I don't take that to mean anything because it was never intended to be heard like that, and it works in context of the song.

Yeah, I barely notice the filters on AI and they help his voice to stand out and work well. It sounds beautiful. While on the Trilogy it makes the vocals way less energetic than they could've been.

I find vocals on AI awful just like the whole album. But hey everyone has their own opinion. :P

I think most of these people became fans because of AI, not because of how they were before they sold out. I can appreciate, and really mostly like them for their older stuff, which is why the trilogy (which I heard maybe 7 songs thanks to Fuzz) appeals to me a lot more than the AI or 21BD albums do, which are the mainstream ones and helped gather their current fan base

For 21st the filters were meant to be noticeable

the trilogy they changed tone wise and either forgot to adjust the filters or just didn't care

When people say something like " I expected better from them", it makes them sound entitled. And this is an issue with a lot of people expressing negative opinions on the internet. Instead of saying "I really don't like this song" they say "This song is terrible" and it makes it sound less like an opinion and more like a fact.  And that obviously isn't true, it's just an opinion. When it's presented like a fact, it can be frustrating and people might interpret it in such a way that it feels like you're trying to prove people wrong. I just think everyone could work on expressing their opinions a little bit better.

IMO, I would love if this song was indicative of their new sound, because I love the trilogy, TRE! especially, and this feels like an expansion on that sound.

I don't like how you expressed your opinion on how we expressed our opinions and thus I invalidate your opinions and dub you to be a greendayfanboy who loves everything they produce even if it's utter shit just because it's greenday. Your opinion is shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did they want them to be noticed in 21CB?

He has used the filter for 15 years, highly doubtful.

You can argue its the same filter as 21CB, not any further back than that though. AI had quite a bit on the vocal, but his voice was different so it doesn't really sound like this.

They recorded it last weekend and released it a few days later.  They are going to spend a hell of alot more time recording a new album.  It took them 7 months to get AI right.  This was something they did to say Merry Christmas.  Have some faith young one.

It's not the time and effort that I worry about. If an album like AI was produced as poorly as the trilogy or this song, then it wouldn't be the crown jewel of their catalog. My concern is that they stick with this sound for some mystifying reason, then even a really good album will sound paltry in comparison to what it could have been.

Um there was this album called 21st CB.

This song and 21CB may have the slightest difference in instrumental production, no? When the vocal is so high in the mix, the filter's original purpose is moot, so it makes less sense to have.

It fitted the production the chaos of the sound

The trilogy's problems, as well as this song's problem, aren't only the sound though (although that's a big part of it). The lyrics are boring as hell and just sound uninspired, too. I want to feel connected to Green Day songs again. I want to feel like they feel connected to their music again.

Like you said, I just really don't understand why they'd want to stick with this sound. It's really baffling, because I don't understand how anyone can objectively say it's preferable to anything else they've done. Even Warning wasn't exactly their normal "pop-punk" sound, per se, but it sounds immaculate compared to the style of the trilogy and this Christmas song.

You really don't feel like they felt connected to the trilogy? They worked very hard on it and were extremely happy and excited about it during it's promotion, so I think a big connection was there.

Nobody can objectively say anything about any type of music being preferable to another type of music, that's all up to personal feelings and opinions, not fact. I like this current style a lot, because I just feel like it's refreshing laid back rock n' roll. I think they do it well, but I'm also open to and excited about what else they might do in the future.

It is the same filter that he has used since even Warning.  He sings differently, therefore it sounds different, but it is still the same filter.

If they recorded this song last week, they clearly just threw it together.  If they want to play around with this type of sound, clearly it needs work.  This is not the production they would they would go for with a complete album, but it doesn't mean the sound can't work..   Maybe this song was put out for two reasons, as a nice surprise for fans and as a feeler.  Now they know that people are not receptive to the high use of filters, the clique lyrics did not go over well so now they can adjust.  They haven't put out an album in quite some time and musical tastes change.

Replace "boring as hell" with "make absolutely no sense" and you've targeted the central problem of the trilogy and (since people continue to discuss it) this song...I mean unless each line of the song is intended to be read/heard independently of the others when read together with the lines before or after it's like wtf is he talking about eg

Somewhere around a plastic manger

Giving thanks to strangers

Christmas time of the year

:ermm:

Like I said in my post a few days ago I wasn't going to analyse a Xmas song but if people are discussing future GD albums imo lyrics are key. Fuck those up and forget about it. The trilogy lyrics were SO bad they were unlistenable frankly.

Yep, the trilogy had some downright offensive lyrics.

The example I always think of is Angel Blue.

"Now I'm singing out the alphabet

As the tears are putting out my cigarette"

This lyric on its own already seems like something lazy that was picked just because it rhymed, but the fact that when we got State of Shock, an early demo, and it had the same exact line, it told me that it was likely just lifted from SoS and put into AB because it was on the album.

That is lazy songwriting and Billie is capable of better.

I appreciate this gift, but I definitely do feel like they just made it for fun in the studio during the trilogy. I wouldn't worry it is what the new sound will be like. It's not exciting really, and i was kind of like oh is it over yet? haha. But yeah, overall whether you think about the lyrics or the vocals, it's not a good song to me. But I will sit back and appreciate the love they are willing to give me.  They're just trying to keep us entertained for now.

OK, put me in the "it's basically a demo and I'm just fucking happy they're playing music together and gracious enough to release it to us fans" camp.

For fuck's sake people, how lucky are we to be nit picking about a fuckaround demo? I can't imagine what a poor Stone Temple Pilots die hard fan might think of this conversation. Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
