This song might sound like recent Green Day, but it doesn't sound like good Green Day — the style they're known for or the style that made them a successful band and a household name. If all of Green Day sounded like this song, or the trilogy, we wouldn't even know who Green Day was to begin with. I really don't understand why fans can't take criticism without jumping to extreme generalizations like this, saying a "poor writer" needs to be crushed and pitied for writing an honest, accurate, three-paragraph review. She's a music journalist. It's her job to review music. And a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee releasing their first music since the induction and their most recent album is newsworthy and deserves a review, critical or not. This whole thread sort of comes off as a big circlejerk of the typical "you're not a REAL fan if you don't like this song!!!" people. To me, that seems a bit more extreme than just nodding your head and accepting that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if you don't agree with them. Yes, we love Green Day. But yes, it's possible that the band may produce things that just simply aren't that good. This song is one of those things. There's nothing wrong with analyzing their material from an objective point of view. And people say Ceadagh overreacts to things... Or, quite possibly, sometimes as a musician you record a "fun" song and listen/ share it with friends while in demo mode (remember those Warning era Christmas songs they shared via phone?). You've probably been in a band and recorded/ listened to your demos with friends as you went along. Happens all the time during the album recording process (with close friends and family), and with technology and the holidays its easy to share a version with a large group of friends (fans) for fun as they did here. Definitely doesn't need to be critiqued at the same level as a finished product. I'm not saying we all should swoon and admire this as the best song ever- it's far from that. What I am saying is the writer should listen critically in context. It's a fun ass demo, nothing more, nothing less. Unfortunately, it's as if the writer was critiquing one of Monet's charcoal sketches of a lily pad and holding it to the same standard as one of the "Water Lily" pieces. They're both great, but it's helpful to know the context and frame of reference, and maintain perspective with reference (and deference to) the evolution of the creative process.

And again, what I am saying is she did provide context in that final paragraph, and no one seems to care... "I’m spending a lot of time and energy on reviewing just one little Christmas single, but that’s also because it’s the first new material from Green Day in a long time, and I expected more." I think everyone is forgetting that, to the mainstream audiences, this is literally the first thing they've first heard from Green Day since the kicked ass in Cleveland in April, so it's going to be scrutinized. Literally everything they do has the preceding phrase "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Green Day" attached to it now. And the mainstream isn't paying attention to every time Billie Joe produces a song for a play, Instagrams a picture of his dinner or decides to open up a coffee shop with Mike like we are on the forum. They want music. And good music, at that.
Akshat Jain Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 7/10 to this song, moreover, sounds like they made this song before AI, i guess for C&V (cause it is similar to Walk Away, {only a guess!!}) but overall, an awesome gift. Dalya Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 This song does sound like Rain by The Beatles a little too much with the 'Walk Away' beats added to it.
Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Haven't read all the posts so I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet
Snows Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 I find the song boring. But they still thinking in us, so it's okay!

They are going to spend a hell of alot more time recording a new album. It took them 7 months to get AI right. This was something they did to say Merry Christmas. Have some faith young one.

Hermione Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Remember they recorded Stop Drop and Roll while making 21st CB and those two albums sound totally different. No way of knowing if their next album will sound anything like this song.

Yeah they didn't change the knobs to the filter to match the clean tone whatever volume or setting he likes the filter set up as is fine when recording a distorted and loud song but when using clean tones it doesn't sound well

Maybe it is more noticeable, but it has been there for awhile. Honestly, it doesn't bother me. It seems to be a style he likes and some songs it works for and some it doesn't. Just like there are older songs that could have used some vocal help, like everything on Insomniac. He uses less affects that most singers out there. If you ever heard Anthony Kiedis without auto tuning it would scare you for life.

Not this way tho, the guitars were way thicker on AI and the filter blended with the mix. On 21CB it was standing out more and as the trilogy's sound is even cleaner the filter makes him sound like he's singing with his head in a bucket. I'm not against the clean sound they need to adjust the vocals.

I will agree, and somewhere amongst this thread I said that I thought what distracted from this song is that it was Billie's worst vocals since Insomniac. I personally don't mind the filters, but yes, it was way too much on this song. I didn't think the filters were that bad on most of the Trilogy, but this song I will agree on.
