It doesn't sound like Green Day because it's not punk or pop punk, as everything by Green Day obviously is.......... cool

What a shite article. My condolences to the poor writer who immediately reacted to a random gifted GD song- dropping out of the heavens without warning- and judged it with the eye of a critic listening to new album for the first time. I take pity, as he/she's clearly never listened to a demo or 7" (huh, what's that?). It's a freaking fun holiday demo, for eff's sake. What did you expect, JoS? Dark Side of the Moon? The White Album? Why can't a band release a fun little demo to its fans without it being judged as if it's been painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? OK, I'll just take a deep breath and not take this article too seriously- maybe Santa didn't bother to stop at the writer's house.

Of course it sounds like Green Day- if one had been paying any attention whatsoever for the last 8 years, this is exactly what you'd expect their "effing around/ we're in J-Town/ hey lets write an Xmas song and throw it out there for fun" types of efforts. It's called FBHT. Which is GD. Which both overlapped with who knows what else they were thinking when they wrote and recorded this. For fun. It's a shits and giggle song. So let's not write a knee jerk pitchfork review about it.

But that's beside the point- this song gave me goosebumps. Not so much for what it is, but for what it represents is happening. Should be an interesting year or two, but it's pretty clear we have a lot of good music to enjoy at some point soon.

Merry XMas, all! 2016 is going to be an awesome year.

If they do it under the name Green Day they should deliver what they are known to do, otherwise they can just pull another name out of their asses like the foxburoughs and call themselves the stocking stuffing fetus' or whatever. Not Green Day!!!!

Honestly I still listen to this song and its officially NOT CHRISTMAS (or XMAS) but like dang I don't know I will probably still be listening to this in April if no other new material comes out by then. Why? Because that is just how I roll.

I honestly don't think she's that far-off in her review... I thought it was pretty spot-on. This song might sound like recent Green Day, but it doesn't sound like good Green Day — the style they're known for or the style that made them a successful band and a household name. If all of Green Day sounded like this song, or the trilogy, we wouldn't even know who Green Day was to begin with.

I really don't understand why fans can't take criticism without jumping to extreme generalizations like this, saying a "poor writer" needs to be crushed and pitied for writing an honest, accurate, three-paragraph review. She's a music journalist. It's her job to review music. And a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee releasing their first music since the induction and their most recent album is newsworthy and deserves a review, critical or not.

This whole thread sort of comes off as a big circlejerk of the typical "you're not a REAL fan if you don't like this song!!!" people. To me, that seems a bit more extreme than just nodding your head and accepting that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if you don't agree with them. Yes, we love Green Day. But yes, it's possible that the band may produce things that just simply aren't that good. This song is one of those things. There's nothing wrong with analyzing their material from an objective point of view.

And people say Ceadagh overreacts to things...

Part of that is a reaction to being criticised for liking the song and being excited about it. Like, yes there's room for people to say they don't like it or give it a critical review if they want but if you can't fangirl about a new Green Day song on a Green Day fan site where can you? Having a place to enjoy the things you like about the band with other people who also like them is kind of the point of visiting a fan site dedicated to them, so when we get a surprise new song for Christmas and instead of being able to have a little celebration about it people are being told they're just mindlessly liking it and it's a fact that under objective analysis it's bad (when actually no one's opinion of it here is more objective than anyone else's) it's annoying and leads to a defensive reaction.

I don't think the review is written badly, the reviewer obviously just doesn't like the song. I disagree it doesn't sound like Green Day though, sounds like she hasn't heard the trilogy.

I just re-read the first two pages of this thread and actually the only posts involving personal criticism of a person/their opinion was actually someone who liked the song being a bit rude and criticizing people who didn't... and a search of the thread shows that the only user who has used the term "mindlessly" is you.

I'll keep searching for the part where someone tells the fangirls "stop liking this song," but all I can find is people saying "I don't like this song," and fans actually invalidating that opinion... not the other way around. It seems like the song supporters are the ones making this weirdly personal.

Again, not saying this just for the sake of arguing. It's just a bit tiring to be told I'm not a "real fan" if I don't enjoy everything the band puts out at equal levels, or if I have high, objective expectations for a band that was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I want to be blown away again by their music because I know that's what they're capable of doing!

I know the coal statement was said somewhat in jest, but just pointing out the inconsistency that for some reason when you say something like that in jest, it's funny, but if Ceadagh says "I hope Rudolph shits down your chimney" in jest, it's considered bullying or unfair criticism. :P

"Mindless" was used in this post:

And yeah you're right that there's been some criticism of people for saying they don't like the song but I don't agree with that either, which is why I made the distinction that it's not saying you don't like it that's the issue but attempting to rain on the parade of those who do, and mentioned that assuming someone just automatically hates any new song is as silly as assuming someone just automatically loves it. I acknowledge that can also be annoying but I think in this case it was the the insistence that the song is bad as if it's from a more objective viewpoint as well as the over the top "oh no Green Day's new album will be terrible" posts that brought the mood of a thread about a light hearted Christmas surprise down.

In this age of rapid changes it warms my heart to see that GDC is still exactly like it was before.

Ah, that just looks like typical Andres-Ceadagh banter to me — I'm not going to speak for Ceadagh, but I assume he wasn't directing that at the entire group of fans who liked the song. (Also, GDC should fix its search button, because that post didn't show up for me... weird.) Likewise, I really don't think Ceadagh or anyone else was trying to "rain on parades" by expressing they dislike the song. I really think we were just expressing our opinions and getting ripped apart for apparently being too negative.

Disclaimer: I'm not Ceadagh's spokesperson, I'm just assuming he got banned for what he said and I'm trying to offer a middle-of-the-road perspective. :P

I mean, I'm not going to lie, if Green Day has learned nothing from the trilogy and continue that recording style for a new album, it will be terrible (in my opinion) and I will be extremely disappointed. But assuming this Christmas song is indicative of their future style is definitely jumping to conclusions too quickly, and I'm not going to make that generalization just yet.

No one's been suspended/banned. It was just a disagreement, no rules have been broken.

This has been mentioned already but I want to know if the song is actually new or not. Does sound like it could be from trilogy times but I hope it was at least recorded recently because I like the idea of them being in the studio working on new stuff and deciding to do a Christmas song for us :D

I'm torn. If it's old, I'm glad because then that means there's still a chance the trilogy style is sticking around. But that also means there's a chance they aren't in the studio. If it's new, then it means they more than likely are in the studio, which is great, but they could also be hanging onto their trilogy recording style, which isn't great.

I know the two aren't mutually exclusive, but they seem like the two most likely scenarios.

Maybe they wrote it during trilogy times, but just recorded it now, and then went back to working on their new material that's a totally different style. It's possible
