MikeDirntConfused Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 The fact that 5-10 years is considered "so long ago" is stupid. The trilogy wasn't very successful but 21CB did quite well and that was only 6 years ago, not very long21st Century's success is semi-overrated on the forum. I mean, yeah, it won awards and 21 Guns was a success, but American Idiot was the last known album for the general public.

Hell, my phone has just automatically capitalised the name. it's the song my friends know. i concur that they were already living from AI's popularity, but i don't think we're overrating 21cb here. lots of gdcers dislike it actually.
GugsGreenDay Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 If there was a popularity decline was fans that are not true . Honestly who need these suckers ?! Who really likes the band is filled stadiums around the world where they spend continue to believe in the music they make . No need to return something already made to please because they never stopped in time, in my opinion improved ever!! Green Day forever !!

It might have been huge but only a minority, other than us, remember it because when you say Green Day and they don't know who you're talking about, I usually just say about AI because I've mentioned 21 Guns and it flies straight over their head like it wasn't popular.

Whenever I mention Green Day, people remember American Idiot, Blvd, and Wake, but everything after that is "they're still around?", "dude, that band was so long ago", or "haven't heard from them in a long time".
The Great Saiyaman Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I am still shocked that people think the Foo Fighters are so much more relevent. They may be touring right now, but they have not had a hit record in 4 years.Only time will tell for this sort of thing, really. By that, I mean the bands will have to have major releases sometime in their future.but i don't think we're overrating 21cb here. lots of gdcers dislike it actually. Nah, it's just those "lots" are much more vocal than the majority.
Grinch Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Nah, it's just those "lots" are much more vocal than the majority.that applies to just about anything when it comes to a group that dislikes something as well
Chin for a Day Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Only time will tell for this sort of thing, really. By that, I mean the bands will have to have major releases sometime in their future. Well I agree with you in regards to how the bands are thought of overall, even though as of today the Foo's have not done anything close to what GD has done. But, I was referring to right now. Alot of people seem to think that the Foo's are the only rock band in the world doing well right now. Where I live, I don't see that. They have not had a hit album in 4 years and most of the teens around here can't stand them. Also, tickets for their concerts are selling on stubhub for $60 so there is not much demand. I jsut don't see their popularity like other people do. At least not where I live.

Not as big as albums like Wasting Light or the Colour and the Shape by any means. "Something From Nothing" and "Congregation" did very well on rock charts and rock radio, and even "Outside" charted. By no means were these songs huge hits for the band, but in a nutshell what I'm trying to say is Sonic Highways was a decent success for the band. Hell, I don't even think this is what you were getting on. Moving on...Yeah, for the people who think they're the "only rock band in the world doing well right now"..... The Foos might as well be the only rock band they know about. There are tons of rock bands doing well right now. However, I would consider the Colour and the Shape's success close to Nimrod's. If not, greater.
Guest Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Wasting Light is the only near Dookie/AI level album FF have ever put out, but it's more around the popularity/quality of 21stCB.

General Admission alone was going for over $400 a peice on craigslist (yeah rediculous in my opinion). The only tickets I was able to find was the very back corner of the whole stadium and those were $120. Of course these weren't the original selling prices but these prices stuck pretty much the day after tickets sold to the day the concert happened. I don't know anyone that dislikes Foo Fighters personally but I don't know a ton of people who's favorite band IS Foo Githers. But they're ONE of their favorites.I also feel that saying Sonic Highways wasn't a hit has a bit of truth to it, but it definately had promotion as well as sales and success. It even had a TV show surrounding the entire making of the album.I don't like comparing Foo Fighters to Green Day because they seem to be two totally different bands that don't have any really comparable situations I feel.

I was just pointing out that I don't see the Foo's being as popular as some people think they are. Some people feel like they are currently the savior of rock music. I just don't see that.Sonic Highways did not have great record sales, I believe below 500K. It had a great opening week, but fizzled after that. I don't think any of the singles had great success. Also, $400 on craiglist is really not that much, 5SOS tickets were going for $3,000. I was really not trying to say they were not popular, just not the biggest band in the world like some people seem to think.

SH has sold 490K in US alone can't find worldwide sales it has sold more than the all three of the trilogy has in the US the tv series also won multiple Emmys GD however are so much better than FF

Bollocks Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Sure they did. "Something From Nothing" and "Congregation" were both number 1 singles.'Outside' is pretty big, too
Chin for a Day Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Sure they did. "Something From Nothing" and "Congregation" were both number 1 singles. They were both #1 on the Rock chart but neither one hit the Billboard Hot 100.
Grinch Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 i hear their sonic highways singles on the radio like every day, especially congregation
The Great Saiyaman Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 They were both #1 on the Rock chart but neither one hit the Billboard Hot 100. #1 on a rock chart >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Low position on the hot 100

They had no idea what I was talking about.

Hermione Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Exactly. The majority only remember 2004/05 and nothing either side of that, which is quite sad because they are only remembered for one album. They're really not only remembered for one album though, Dookie and Good Riddance will always be remembered as well. And just because teens don't remember more it doesn't mean nobody does

And just because teens don't remember more it doesn't mean nobody does only old ppl remember the 90s tho really, Dookie's not what my peers know. I've got a friend who likes Good Riddance, but he claims it's their only old song worth listening
MikeDirntConfused Posted October 17, 2015 Author Posted October 17, 2015 Green Day has become like the Baha Men. "Who Let the Dogs Out" was a worldwide hit, and everybody knew and listen to them. Now, they're irrelevant in modern society and music - but if you have to ask people, everyone will know the song.
Hermione Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 only old ppl remember the 90s tho really, Dookie's not what my peers know. I've got a friend who likes Good Riddance, but he claims it's their only old song worth listeningIsn't it like that with most bands though? Younger people will have heard of their newer stuff, older people more of their older stuff, but still most people who aren't fans only know a couple of their songs. I find it over the top to say a band is already forgotten when 5 years ago they had a number one Grammy award winning album with successful singles, were all over TV, and had a popular world tour. The trilogy wasn't that successful and was barely promoted and now they're on a long break so it's to be expected they won't be at the forefront of many people's minds right now (especially people who were children when 21st CB came out), but I think if they put a good album out and are actually available to promote it more people will know of them and of more of their old stuff again.Green Day has become like the Baha Men. "Who Let the Dogs Out" was a worldwide hit, and everybody knew and listen to them. Now, they're irrelevant in modern society and music - but if you have to ask people, everyone will know the song.I think you're very slightly downplaying Green Day's status
