What was he doing at the fashion event he chased them out of? I mean, that means he was there, too, right? I think I take things too literally.

That's what I was thinking

Some people are asking about the fashion show incident, so here is the interview relating to that. Lydon's comments were:

Interviewer:

What do you think of new punk rock bands?

Lydon:

I hope you don't mean Green Day.

Interviewer:

I could add Green Day to the list.

Lydon:

Good. I'll explain it like this: There is a coathanger with leather jackets and studs. A vacuous statement.

Previously done better, didn't need to be duplicated and watered-down. That's the present Green Day.

I don't believe them at all. I find them very foolish. I chased them out of a room once.

Interviewer:

Why?

Lydon:

Because they turned up at a fashion award which I didn't believe in, and couldn't believe they believed in being there.

I'd love to know how much of that story is actually true. The bit about Lydon 'chasing' them out of the room is obviously bollocks, that didn't happen. It's more likely that Green Day thought 'Oh fuck its John Lydon, let's get out if here'.

Hey, he's pissed all you guys off. That's pretty 'punk', right? Ha.

I love Johnny Rotten, and I guess he's entitled to his own views, even if I don't necessarily agree with him. Like it or not, he's proved a huge influence on Green Day with his work with the Sex Pistols, and you could argue that Green Day would never have got a 'punk' tag if it wasn't for the Sex Pistols garnering attention to all that stuff back in the 70s. Whether it's to bring attention to himself, or he loves to hate Green Day, or simply doesn't dig their music, who really cares? Maybe it's due to the fact that he's from a different era, who really knows? He's entitled to his views though. It's not like he's supporting nazism or whatever. Like what you like, or in this case - dislike what you dislike.

As for the fashion event, I'm just guessing Green Day didn't 'wanna cause a scene. Johnny can be known for that.

I also wish folk wouldn't be so butt-hurt, y'know? 'Never Mind the Bollocks...Here's the Sex Pistols' is one of my all time favourite records, and is definitely a record that defined an era, and changed everything (in terms of politics in music, 'punk', and the fact you didn't even have to be talented to be in a band). I'm positive it's surely a record which has both influenced and inspired Green Day, too. I don't think you could name me any other artist or band that was arrested for performing 'God Save the Queen' and 'Anarchy in the UK' on a boat on the River Thames during the Queen's jubilee, or one who caused controversy like they did - and opened new doors. They're the only band I'd give a 0/10, yet a 10/10 as well at the same time. The Sex Pistols were never meant, nor ever aimed, to be 'good'. If they did, then ol' Malcolm McLaren would never have put Sid Vicious in the band. Overall, the primary aim was to create controversy, sing about political issues, problems bringing working people down within the United Kingdom, and cause anarchy. If that isn't classified as 'punk', then I don't know what is. Johnny is also one of my favourite vocalists. He hardly has the voice of an angel - but his vocals are/were so bratty, in-your-face, angry, whilst giving the sense that he didn't give any fucks. Absolutely brilliant.

I guess what I'm saying is to please consider what you 'wanna say about the Sex Pistols or Johnny Rotten before you type it out. I doubt Green Day care about his opinion, anyway. They'll always use the Sex Pistols as an influence, nonetheless.

I dunno I get the impression that Jonny Rotten has a short fuse on him and goes psycho when he's angry. We all saw what Sid Vicious was capable of.

Double standards maybe?

What the... :ermm:

You can NOT compare two people like that it is ridiculous. Just because they were in the same band does not mean they were the same people. Even if they were twins wouldn't have made them the same people. People commit horrible crimes every day and their friends, co-workers and family are not responsible or automatically of the same personality or nature. John Lydon choose the name "Johnny Rotten" and the punk persona to go with it. He seems to revel in trying to be nasty or a little mean but he genuinely hates Green Day. Not all of his criticism is even without fault but you can't brand him "psycho" and hint at "we all saw what Sid was capable of" as if to suggest he might even murder somebody...that is fucked. As if Billie Joe hasn't come off as "psycho" when he lost his temper etc on stage. On some forum somewhere someone could brand him in an equally nasty way without having to refer to a bandmate.

The idea that he "chased Green Day out" of anywhere is laughable, I don't believe he was being entirely serious with that comment.

I think it's more of a phrase...like when he walked in they all left quickly/felt uncomfortable and exited. I hear that used a lot it isn't meant like he ran after them

Unless they're bullies. Then everyone they know is guilty, too.
