Green Day's New Genre?

Talking about a "new genre" it's not that easy for a complete new sound and chances are that musically it won't be much different from Trilogy. However one can easily understand how they evolved to the trilogy sound:

During 21stCB tour they covered a variety of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Beatles, AC/DC (the last two even being cited influences for the trilogy) and many more, later even went on to cover The Misfits for Metallica's anniversary which definitely tells that they wanted a more classic rock sound but made it way too cleaner which turned trilogy not much satisfactory.

After trilogy they released Demolicious which were just demos and raw version of trilogy songs hence, I doubt they will go this direction as releasing Demolicious was just a sign to show they were still active. Billie temporarily joined The Replacements which is influential on him and even on Green Day so he must have developed his musicianship accordingly which I hope may be seen in the new album. Talking about the X'mas song I still don't think they will make the album in that way, musically it was fine for me but vocals sounded too polished, but anyway. The equipment we got to see from their recent photos and according to many of you, they were used by classic rock bands but still it can't be said that it will sound exactly like Clash or The Who and this time there are not many hints to predict. I remember a tweet by Billie where he described that he likes riffs from Def Leppard songs but still it's not enough.

If a major change is coming to their sound it can be rather plain and more back to roots like - Early Punk Rock, Hardcore Punk, Hard Rock, Traditional Heavy Metal or even more extreme like Crossover-Thrash, Crust Punk or else something totally different or experimental like Stoner Rock/Sludge Metal, Grunge, Industrial or again Garage Rock (but honestly I don't want much experiments this time).

please no. I'd genuinely prefer another KFAD and it's a known fact how much I dislike it.

yeah, and I do believe it's less afwul than Green Day playing psychedelic rock would be.

KFAD ska punk?  Bradley Nowell just rolled over in his grave.

Ska influenced maybe. Ska punk? No more than  Kill the DJ is disco. I sincerely hope that the closest Green Day ever gets to psychedelic rock is that Dookie demo of Walkin' the Dog.

I made this post for us to discuss what Green Day's new 'genre' is going to be. I know we're going to get people saying "Screw the genre just listen to the musicc mannnannnnn #swag101 yolo", but Billie Joe said that he'd written a few songs and I was just curious as to what style he's writing them.

- CreatureQuake.

I see people either kidding with "gangsta rap' , metal , and whatever else, but I do not think GDC could tolerate Green Day to do something different since most of them hated the trilogy. I feel like a record sounding as similar to American idiot or anything prior to  AI would win back the crowd they disappointed. However I truly believe they pulled off Nightlife just fine and wouldn't mind another feature from a rapper. To be honest, at this point of their career, I could pretty much take anything from them and find songs I enjoy without complaining and just move on.

Screw the genre just listen to the musicc mannnannnnn #swag101 yolo :yay:

The new sound will probably be folk music/50s country music. We all know how us Green Day fans love country music.

I'm all in for a little harder music! They don't have to do metal, but I love powerful songs with that special punch in your face like East Jesus Nowhere, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, St. Jimmy, Geek Stink Breath, etc.

Some pedals they're apparently using for the new album are favorites of bands like SLAYER. So there's the potential for harder stuff.

Me too, I love all the songs you listed. I agree 100%

How come you got to know to that the pedals they are currently using are used by Slayer?!? If that be the case then musically it would be a very huge change.

I don't remember which pedal it was but I think it was that tubescreamer or something. It was the first thing my friend pointed out when I showed him Billies picture.

Just because Slayer uses it, doesn't neccessarily mean that Green Day will sound like Slayer  all I wanted to say was that Green Day are able to make their guitars sound a little more aggressive/ harder. If they want to! Of course they could go all crazy and do music like Slayer, but (and this is what I think) they can use those pedals just to a certain level, so then it wouldn't be brutal metal but maybe harder than Green Day's standard guitar sound.

I hope this made sense.

We just love speculating don't we?   What else can we do?

Anyway.   I'd like an album to sound like American Idiot crashing into Nimrod while Tre! (the album) pull the burning bodies from the wreckage and urinates on them, with Warning lights in the middle of August.

But seriously.    American Idiot sound combined with Nimrod's wild variety, the lyrical prowess of Warning mixed with Green Day's newest sounds that Tre! teased us with in certain songs.

But seriously again.   2016 is quickly slipping away and all I hear is the rumble of GDA user keyboards making jokes about Norwegian Death Metal and how much Dos sucked.    I was going to say The Who are about to become my favorite band but that would be even more painful.  They haven't releases a new album since 2006.

Think I'm gong to get off here for a few months.  I can't take the soul crushing agony of all these "new" articles about coffee, film reviews and what kind of glasses Tre Cool wore while grocery shopping.  I.  Just.   Can't.

For someone who just can't, it sounds an awful lot like you just did. That was a hell of a soliloquy.

What do you mean 2016 is slipping away? It's March, dude. Are there any sane people on this forum? Yes, people here love to speculate because – surprise! It provokes discussion. And as I'm sure you know, this is a discussion forum.

I'm gonna let you in on a secret: I don't read every thread in Green Day Chat. Quite honestly, I don't read most of the threads. It's fine if you're not interested in compostable coffee bags, or what color Billie Joe's hair is this week, really it's fine. I'm not interested in those things either. Skip those threads if they're not your deal. Or go dark for a while, that's cool too. But your post comes off as a sarcastic attempt at making a loud exit.

But just so my post doesn't go totally off the rails with regards to the topic, I'd prefer an album with the sonic qualities of Nimrod and the urgency of American Idiot. Not holding my breath for it, nor will I be disappointed if we get something different.

 Crossover-Thrash

I wanted to make note of how well Crossover-Thrash would fit Green Day. My boyfriend and I talk about Green Day and Metallica being friends often, and the idea that some their ideas would rub off on each other is always a feasible one. I would imagine it sounding a bit like early Anthrax with cleaner vocals. Like if Capitalism is Cannibalism (the EP) and Uno had a bastard child.
Wait that's basically just the heavier sides of Pinhead Gunpowder then. Nevermind.

I don't think Beej had the vocals in him for hardcore punk though.

Oh my! To be honest, Nimrod wasn't all that varied, much less wildly varied (and I'm talking about the ol' plain variety, much less wild wariety). All they did was adding tiny infusions of violin, harmonica and horns (there are probably more, but these are the most noticeable) to regular Green Day songs with the exception of Last Ride In and Good Riddance and maybe, just maybe, Take Back and Platypus. But, I think, it was their first baby steps to trying new things and getting out of Dookie rut.

Warning, on the contrary, is slightly more varied than Nimrod, but I think it somewhat lacked lyrically as opposed to say Nimrod, or Insomniac. Oh well.

I almost agree with you 100%.  The place I differ is Warning lacked lyrically.  One of my favorite lyrics he's ever written is compromise part in Church on Sunday.  The whole song is about how a relationship needs to be a compromise.

I hereby solemnly swear to tell
The whole truth
And nothing but the truth is what
I'll ever hear from you now
"Trust" is a dirty word that comes
Only from such a liar
But "respect" is something I will earn..
If you have faith

I love how he switches it between the two of them.  It starts with I hereby, then goes to truth is what I'll ever hear from you, then back to respect is something I will learn.  I always thought it was so mature how he switched that between the two because a relationship is a compromise.

Sarcastic attempt, which means I'm not really exiting.  lol.   But yeah!  The next album shall be......    NIMROD IDIOT!!!!!   It will tell the the tale of St. Jimmy dressing up in panty hose and scattering pictures on his bedroom floor.   Uptight and Homecoming well be revealed to be the same suicide and the narrative will get hard to follow from there, but it will be epic!

I meant that 2016 is passing by and we haven't had any real news in a very long stretch.   And I'm one of the biggest speculators on here.  I was just making an observation.   Those things go hand in hand.  Green Day makes us wait three to four years between albums, it's what we do.  And I do skip those threads. I mostly blow up the 'best setlist' one, haha.  So.....we're both pulling for a Nimrod / Idiot combo.  That's cool!

They'll do what they've be doing for the last 25+ years. I don't think GD will somehow reinvent themselves this far into their career. What's the point of this thread?

You are probably right  The point of this thread is talking about what we'd like them to do as it is the point of half the threads in this chat :D It would be exciting if they reinvented themselves or at least found new perspectives in doing "their thing", it would be a good move at this point of their career.
