Green Day's New Genre?

If they wrote SWTRLF in '93, I wonder why it took 19 years to decide whether to actually release it. Mind you, the trilogy is essentially just demos with refined sound.

Probably because Billie finally got drunk enough to say fuck it and release a 20 year old demo.

It was mostly a joke, but the riff just after the start does vaguely resemble SWTRLF.

Seems pretty likely they'll have the usual core pop punk/rock sound. It's the little extra influences of various other genres on top that make different albums and songs sound different. No real way of guessing what they'll be, but knowing they're willing to experiment with different sounds and directions so that it'll be something of a surprise whatever it is makes it more exciting.

I'm thinking at least one of the songs that he has written is a song that ties back to rehab and iHeart. So probably a slow, reflective song along the lines of the Forgotten or maybe even Good Riddance. The others are probably just their typical GD stuff

Next Green Day album will be Green Day style.

Definitely looking forward to hearing what direction they go with it! Tone wise I'd like to hear something more like American Idiot/21st Century Breakdown but then maybe it will be something totally new. I do have high hopes after Billie Joe's RS interview, as well as the video of him outside the Swimmers show, all pointing to the fact that they're taking it slow and perfecting things.

I've always hated classifying anyone in a genre. I don't know if they fit into one anyway. They have a style. They have never swayed from the 3 or 4 chord power chord songs. But they have always managed to do something different with that style. Who the hell knows what they come up with. But I will bet money it will be 3 or 4 chord power chords.

I would like something like Let Yourself Go but dirtier. Dirty guitars, intense bass and drums would be perfect. Like an updated dookie sound.

I have no idea.... I can see them adopting a new sound, but i can also see them revisiting the sound of either AI or 21st CB, because those sounds worked. (This is the sentence where people will hate me) I wouldn't mind then continuing and developing the sound of a Trilogy album, iTre probably.

But in truth idk what i think, or want, there is too many possibilities!

I would definitely love to see them expand on the Tre sound. I loved X-Kid, Missing you, 99 Revolutions, and DRB. I think if they stuck with stuff like that, but developed it more (as you said), then they could definitely create some great songs, in my opinion.

Rock music influenced heavily by punk, aka what they've been doing variations of for 25 years.

I think you have that backwards. Punk is a subgenre of rock.

Not really. I mean rock in the sense that Foo Fighters play it, in which it's so bland and uncreative that it can only be called "rock". Green Day are that, with a punk twist.

I see what you mean. Foo Fighters play alternative rock. Alt rock has some stylistic origins in punk. I think it's basically impossible to just have plain rock these days.

I also want Green Day to go with that '¡Tre!' Sound and develop it further, with a rawer and dirtier sound. Songs like Brutal Love, X-Kid, Drama Queen etc.

There is massive potential with that sound,I'd love to see them develop it more :)

Maybe they should try another long song, like Homecoming, with bits written by everyone. Would be interesting to hear what would spawn from that idea.

I'd love to see it live since Homecoming is my favorite, but I'd prefer something more cohesive next time. they did much better job with JOS where the parts transition really smoothly.

I think they'll continue along the lines of the trilogy. Perhaps a bit more coherent and focused, as opposed to the trilogy which was a bit all over the place in terms of styles. Their sound may be "renewed", but I think the songwriting itself is going to be fairly similar to what they did the last time. It just seems to be how they are progressing as a band.

I'd like to hear Mike or Jason sing on the next album. They both have good voices and it would be a nice change up for one song in the album.

Maybe even have Tré on a joke song at somewhere.

They are using tons of old equipment. I did a little research a while back on some of it. A lot of there equipment was advertised as "Used by "So and so"" mostly referring to a lot of 70-80's rock bands. With reference to Billies Tweets, the use of this equipment could be there attempt to ditch the term "Pop-punk". However, I highly doubt they will leave out the bands natural tone. With that being said, I think the album will sound very similar to their recent work just with different guitar tones - bass tones - vocal filters - etc. They might throw in something unexpected though. I think one thing they probably took from the trilogy is that something had to change. We will see. I have a good feeling about this one.
