Hermione Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I would like more information about these things, please. A few weeks before Billie went to rehab Bill stopped working for Green Day, ie being their tour manager, guitar tech, doing stuff for them online etc, and as far as I know that's still the case. I don't know if there was actually any bad feeling or anything or if it was just a career move but the timing made it seem like there was a good chance it was the former. And apparently when someone met Billie outside the AI musical and asked him to sign In China With Green Day since she had it on her he wouldn't and was like "oh that" and was snotty about it (although he was happy to sign other stuff instead). There's also kind of a weird rant thing along with the lyrics of Rusty James in the special edition booklet of Uno (there's a little piece of writing to go with each song) where it talks about your fucking book and stuff, no idea whatsoever if it has anything to do with it but I can't think what else it's about so I have a theory that it might be about it . So partly just speculation but it did seem like they probably weren't best of friends with the band at that point.
captain peroxide Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 This is all so interesting! Thank you While we're speculating, why do we think Bill had bad blood with the dudes after working with them for so long? My guess, based on the timing of everything, would be he was tired of dealing with Drunk Billie's shenanigans. Now that he's sober, they've started to patch things up. I wouldn't be surprised about being somewhat upset about that Cometbus issue, it was fairly critical in parts, if I remember correctly. My copy's gathering dust somewhere I remember especially the bits about Tre made him come off as kind of a douche, but I don't remember him saying anything about Billie specifically. I guess the guys are brothers, they're gonna care about what someone else says about any of them.
Spike Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Where can I see this Cometbus thing? Never heard of it. /terrible fan
bollard_11 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I have a copy of that Cometbus at home. Robbed off Bec and never read it. Probably should get on that...
captain peroxide Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Where can I see this Cometbus thing? Never heard of it. /terrible fan I mean, you know who Aaron Cometbus is, right? Old friend of the band, Pinhead Gunpowder drummer, etc. He publishes a magazine every now and then, and he did one (#54) a couple of years ago which was all about him going to Asia with Green Day on tour, and just kinda writing from what I feel was a pretty objective, critical perspective about all the stuff they did and whatnot. Rusty James was probably written about him. As for grabbing a copy, check eBay? If you can't find anything, I'll scan my copy for you, but it'll take a while.

Yeah, I know who he is but I've either never heard anything about his criticism of the band or I have but forgot entirely. But yeah I'll check eBay, thanks.
captain peroxide Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Larry wrote a great column about Cometbus here: http://larrylivermore.com/?p=2018 Tells you a bit about the dude and what his deal is.
Hermione Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure bill is working with them again, maybe doing guitar tech stuff. when something went wrong with one of the guitar pedals when they were playing with tim armstrong at the house of blues, bill was the one who came out and fixed it! Oh didn't know that, that's great! I enjoy Bill Schneider spotting at shows so glad it's not a thing of the past . I suppose it isn't that surprising since he's doing the guitar shop thing with him too.

THAT'S what Green Day are going to release next: their own take on Where's Waldo, except it's all pictures of gigs and you have to find Bill Schneider.

DannyDirnt Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Well since I was listening to 21cb at the time I would say EJN - & I would also like another like brutal love to end the set. But how would you describe a huge stadium song? Because those two have very little in common. Maybe a crowd-pleaser that people enjoy singing along to?
Hermione Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 THAT'S what Green Day are going to release next: their own take on Where's Waldo, except it's all pictures of gigs and you have to find Bill Schneider. The easiest one would be the Foxboro Hot Tubs in London picture with him wearing an eye catching purple and blue tracksuit with matching blue glasses. But the rest would be more of a challenge. Also I'd recommend trying to get hold of Cometbus In China With Green Day to anyone, probably the most interesting and insightful piece of writing I've ever read about the band.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 So maybe I'm a #badfan, but I've never listened to Pinhead Gunpowder. I've also never read the Cometbus stuff about Green Day in China. Recommendations for songs? And how much would a copy of the Cometbus thing likely run me? Obviously with Green Day being irrelevant ATM, I need something to keep me entertained.

I'm not a huge fan of Pinhead Gunpowder (sorry) but they did a really great cover of Mahogany.

It was so refreshing to read something that was honest (or at least felt honest) and critical in parts, instead of the usual "biggest punk band in the world has grown up" wankery we usually get these days. You can buy a copy on Amazon (truly punk) for about $25. Look on eBay, though, they're probably going for cheaper. I'm gonna see if I can find my copy tonight to scan it. It's long, though, so no promises.

Talk to Hannah, she used to be crazy into PHGP. I'm not that into them though. They just seem like a worse Green Day who never signed to a major label.

I agree, I'd rather read something truthful and objective, even if it is critical, than Kerrang! screaming "WE LOVE GREEN DAY!" every other day, so I'll probably try and check it out. I'll wait to see if your scans work before I go splurging though. Talk to Hannah, she used to be crazy into PHGP. I'm not that into them though. You really find out a lot of interesting stuff about a world we usually have no window into, or at least a world we're given a sanitized, "radio-friendly" view of. #54 is on tour, backstage, behind the scenes with Green Day, warts and all.

Guest Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 So, do they sound like 39/Smooth Green Day or worse? They sound like Kerplunk era Green Day with a little bit of SDR thrown in, which on paper sounds amazing, but they're a bit underwhelming really.

Listen to the Shoot The Moon EP, it's basically a taster of their best sound (and their second-best release in general), if you like that then listen to Goodbye Ellston Avenue.
stuck-with-she Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Give "life during wartime" (electric and acoustic versions) and 2nd avenue a listen. My favourite PHGP songs
In Your Coffee Maker Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/billie-joe-armstrong-talks-surreal-hall-of-fame-night-new-green-day-lp-20150430 Not sure if anyone has read this yet, (apologies if you have), but Billie basically implies that they're taking it slow with their next record because they're trying to make every song come from a real place and emotion. Personally I think this is super exciting, sure it's gonna suck that we won't have any new material for a while, but when we do I know it will be 100% worth the wait.
DannyDirnt Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I just hope they come back to their Insomniac style. Upbeat songs with dums, bass and distorted guitars only.
