Why are people stuck on the Gilham banned thing? It's not like they are singling Green Day out alone as they don't allow any major label bands to perform

My guess is something from the Lookout days (Paper Lanterns, Holden Caulfield, 2LYA, or Going to Pasalacqua), something from Dookie (Basket Case, Longview, or Burnout) and something from American Idiot (American Idiot, JOS, maybe Letterbomb if I could have my way). If we're lucky and get four songs then I could see them throwing something from the trilogy in, maybe X-Kid or Oh Love

I just hope they don't play 21 Guns or BOBD.

It would be cool if they played Burnout. I love that song. I wish they would play Jaded more. It's such a fast and furious song. I want to jump around and go crazy when I hear it.

So, with GD being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, what three songs would you guys like to see the band play at the ceremony?

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Billie hinted at the possibility of including something from the Lookout! years, and I reckon it'd be sick to hear something that hasn't been done live in like 25 years! Dry Ice? I'm just hoping that the picks won't be too predictable! Any thoughts?

It seems obvious they'll play something from Dookie (Basket Case I think and I hope) and from American Idiot: I hope Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia or Letterbomb, but I think they'll end up playing American Idiot, I like that song but I think like... I don't know, it's not their best, too much predictable, so that's not my choice. What if they play Wake me up when September ends? That would be very emotional! And then an old song, probably Going to Pasalacqua. At the same time, Good Riddance would be very cool! It sounds perfect. Plus I don't know why but I feel like they'd like to perform something from they latest albums, but I don't know which song to sacrifice from the above!

Am I the only one that thinks AI is not a good choice - it's better in a loud concert setting.

American Idiot has not done anything for me live, since it was the opener on the AI tour. I definitely don't want to see it played at the HoF. From that album I'd much rather see JoS or Letterbomb, but even any of the other singles would be better than American Idiot.

It won't be Letterbomb, they've already done it at the HoF and JoS is too long..

I know Billie said they want to play a pre-Dookie song but I feel like they probably won't. They always seem to be very concerned (over concerned imo) about avoiding playing a song and the audience not knowing it well/not being into it even when just talking about setlists for concerts full of fans, let alone an important ceremony mostly full of and being watched on TV by people who'll have only heard their biggest hits. I think at best they'd do Welcome To Paradise.

I had that same exact thought, but then I realized that that won't necessarilly mean anything if the band wanna play it. There is no rule stating they can't do a song twice at that venue. JoS is not totally impossible either. They get alot of artistic freedom when it comes to their own HoF setlist I would bet, and if I were Green Day I'd pick JoS. They might not though, how could I possibly know, but that one plus 2 oldies would equal 3 songs in a 15 minute setlist, which fits perfectly with what we know about the average HoF performance.

Besides, these were just my preferences of American Idiot songs. I listed my real list of guesses further back; 409 In Your Coffee Maker, Basket Case & JoS

There is no rule that they can't play letterbomb again, but why would they? It is going to be a similar audience and there are much better songs in theor catalog for this type of occasion. I'm reading alot of articles that think they will be the headliners. In the past, the headliners have gotten 4 songs. If that is the case they can do JoS. Since that is arguably the greatest song in their catalog, they might actually do it.

They play the very first track from their first album, their biggest hit and a BRAND NEW SONG. Because Green Day is all about moving forward. I know they are taking time off right now, but one song is doable.

  1. At the Library
  2. Boulavard of Broken Dreams
  3. (Brand New Song).

I'm almost certain that Billie Joe already has a bunch of decent songs written for whenever GD get back to it, I think that most his songs are written in the period where the band doesn't seem to do much. But if they were to play a new song at the HoF it would have to be a great song, a really great song. It's a short setlist and there is no room for one song to fail. It would have to be hit single material, and if he's got one such song written already, I don't think they would "waste" it so long before their next album

I doubt they will play JOS , it's too long.

Metallica played "Master of Puppets" at their induction - which was 8:20 long. After that they played "Enter Sandman" (5:55).

So it's not too long, but yeah - I also doubt it, tbh.

American idiot

something old but widely known like christie road

and of corse they would end with good riddance

I've actually decided that they need to do Brutal Love. It is a brilliant, overlooked song and will seem new to alot of people.

American Idiot

Basket Case

Only of You

OK, been thinking about this some more and I have the whole set in my head. First, I know Billie said that it would be nice to do something from the Lookout years, but with a limited set it doesn't fit, with the possible selection of Welcome to Paradise. I'm also making the assumption that they will be the headliners and have a slightly longer set.

So, the stage is dark, we hear nothing but the familiar baseline. Lights focus on Billie who starts with, "I sit around and watch the tube but nothings on". He gets to the chorus, all the lights come on and band goes nuts.

Then they slow it down and break out into Brutal Love.

Everyone is calm, the stiffs in the front are happy the song wasn't loud and obnoxious and Billie goes into "I'm the son of rage and love" Then they take it home from there.

So:

Longview

Brutal Love

Jesus of Suburbia

Now they just have to listen to me. :)

Ringo most likely be the headliner

Ringo most likely be the headliner

Initially, that was my thought as well, as soon as I found out that Paul was inducting Ringo. However, alot of the music bloggers out there feel that GD will be, or should be the headliners. And before you say it, I know it is just their opinion and the hall will do whatever they want. However, what they are saying started to really make sense to me.

First, the night should really belong to the artists that elected as performers, not an artist given an award. Let's face facts, Ringo is never going to get elected on his solo career. If Paul and Ringo have an ounce of decency in them, they would turn down the headliner spot for the performers. That one is a big if.

With that said, it is really shaping up to be a really shitty show. There will be 3 tribute sets, maybe 4 if Bill Withers decides not to perform. How exciting are the tribute sets going to be? I mean who is going to do the set for the Paul Butterfield Band? Can anyone really name a Paul Butterfield song off the top of their heads? That leaves Joan Jett and Green Day to carry the show.

Part of the criticism of GD getting elected is that they got in before bands such as Deep Purple and Yes. Part of the reason (they deserved it!) and the hall is trying to gain interest with a younger audience. Thus one reason to elect bands such as Nirvana and GD. Why give the headliner spot to someone like Ringo?

That is my hope and I'm sticking to it until its deflated :)

I really believe they only let in green day and not green day and NIN this year is because they need to put on a decent ceremony for as many years as they possibly can. Because honestly in 5-10 years which of these old artists is gonna want to perform or be alive to perform once they get in? Plus I mean no one is gonna pay to see these newer punk bands like built to spill, the cure, the pixies or even the smiths when their 50-65 years old to perform at the rock and hall of fame ceremony. Soon they'll be announcing these things online and sending the artists a letter in the mail and that will be it.

Agreed, that was my point as to why GD should be the headliners. They need to put on a good show. But, an ex-Beatle, even if it is Ringo, is hard to beat. It can go either way.

Yeah I think green day will get to perform quite a bit even with Joan but i think it will be a ringo, macartney close out. But Billie might get to perform a beatles/ringo song with them. I just have a hard time seeing ringo and joan jett closing the ceremony playing good riddance.
