Billie Joe's girlfriends

I think I read somewhere that Stuart and the Ave. was about her as well - is that right, was the source wrong, or am I misremembering?

Oh yeah I'd forgotten that one, I remember someone mentioned that on here before and I queried it so I just did a search and found the conversation, apparently Billie said it was about her on stage once and also in an interview so that is right.

Winona Ryder? What?

In the 90s there was a rumour that Billie had an affair with her , I think based solely on the fact that they posed for a totally normal everyday photo together at some event (as that's the only connection between them I've ever seen/heard).

I don't get how Chump is about her. I always assumed it was basically a "I blame the world but no one directly" song. What lyric points to her?

Billie said so (from the interview posted above My now ex-girlfriend is also on the songs "Sassafras Roots" and "Chump."). I can't tell from the lyrics how she inspired it but she must've done in some way.

Winona Ryder? What?

My entire post was sarcasm. Winona and Billie were friends in the 90's and hung out together and were photographed etc together. It became a popular rumor back then that they were dating.

How does it make sense that Chump is about an ex? The lyrics are straightforward about dicks who hate people for no reason (maybe it's just jealousy etc) but they don't even get to know the person first (i don't even know your name) and Billie offers the suggestion that these people are just dumb branding them chumps. Honestly half the time I wonder if Billie even knows what he's talking about when he talks about his own songs (in interviews). An example is Basket Case. A million times I've read or watched him say it was about his panic disorder/feeling like he was losing his mind and then I saw an interview on the Big Breakfast where he (totally seriously) said it was about a friend of his (I think he called her Bella or something) and "she's crazy". ..Alrighty then.

Chump is surely about her going out and meeting another guy? And him not knowing him but being jealous?

I thought he said Chump was about a guy who was seeing a girl he liked

Am I the only one that thinks those books are a complete wash?
I haven't read them since I was like 15, but I have 4 of them, and they all contradict each other.

p.s.

"Hey Erica, the gee-tar is in the house" - 1991 Her voice can be heard on WMMR

Also, I thought she was the one who moved to Ecuador and inspired Good Riddance?
All this new "Amanda" stuff threw a wrench in our understanding lol

You actually believe such a comment? God you're naive

I think it's interesting that he still writes songs about Amanda even though they haven't been together for a long time and he's married. He obviously still thinks about her a lot.

It's called "Nobody Likes You". It's a good book about Green Day. I recommend it.

Okay I will check them out :D

He didn't say it was about an ex, he said his girlfriend who he was with at the time of writing it is "on" it. That doesn't mean the whole song is about her, could just mean some small part of it was inspired by her in some way.

Basket Case could easily be about both those things/inspired by both those things. He's said the "I went to a whore..." bit was inspired by woman he was friends with who worked as a prostitute, maybe that was the friend he was referring to there or maybe it was another friend, either way a song can be about more than one thing.
