i cannot tell if this is sarcasm.i too believe the laws could be more strict,background checks could be better, or you could have to be registered before owning a gun or something, but remember the laws only keep the honest people honest.

The laws keep gun crime at an extremely low level in European countries while thousands are hurt or killed by them in the US. The vast majority of criminals don't have guns here because it's so hard to get them with the laws so strict, most police don't even have them because the chance of a criminal/anyone having one is so low that they don't need them. I haven't noticed any drawback yet.

The most convincing pro-gun argument is that people will always kill and giving them access to means of doing so will not affect that. You can kill someone with any weapon. Chainsaw. Hatchet. Pencil. Knife. Should we ban all of these things? No. The problem isn't guns. The problem is negligence to mental health in our country. In most cases of mass shootings, there was a psychological problem in the mind of the murderer than was simply disregarded.

A good phrase to use is "Laws do not apply to criminals". Criminals break laws for the satisfaction of doing so. Layering on more laws will do nothing. Ban guns like you ban drugs and you are going to lead to more violence and just as easy access, except this time not documented or controlled.

Just look at the UK for an example. They passed the Second Firearms Act in 1997 as a reaction to a school shooting. Since that year, murder per 100,000 has risen and peaked at 2.1 in 2002. The rate started at 1.12/100k and hasn't even come close to that low since that year.

Overall, people will keep killing, and giving them more attention and negative reinforcement will only give them more of a kick. My town has a lot of gun owners. Most of them keep them locked up or only use them for hunting. Where are the gun crimes happening? In the poor part of my town, usually with stolen weapons. Go ahead and make guns illegal. Nothing will change.

I don't really consider myself pro-gun because I think we need to restrict some rifles and stuff like that. However, I am not aniti handgun. I don't see anything wrong with owning a handgun for protection. I do not think people should be allowed to own them without passing proficiency tests as well as mental health checks and stuff like that. The problem in the United States is that we are already in too deep. We cannot just say "no more guns." 1) People wouldn't give them up that easily 2) Even if all the legal gun owners turned in their guns, you would still have all the illegal gun owners (gang members and other criminals" carrying guns and commiting crimes. There are numerous stories of legal gun owners protecting family members and saving other innocent lives because they were carrying and were able to stop the criminal. Problem with that is that handgun murders are more numerous than rifle and shotgun murders.

Edit: Found the statistic that in 2004, of prison inmates incarcerated due to gun-related crimes, only 2% of them obtained the guns legally. That's incredible.

Just because there are clearly guns in circulation it doesn't mean the only solution is for everybody to continue arming themselves. That is insane logic. I have recently returned from Australia and the US could learn a lot from their gun laws. They took action when tragedy struck and continue to make changes to their laws and the numbers killed by guns every year have dropped by the hundreds.

The US policy leaves the most vunerable people in society more vunerable. The fact that anyone could shoot dead a room full of school children with a legally held gun (it has happened numerous times by fellow students and outsiders) is demented. Fuck mental health checks and regulating gun sizes...question why anyone sane wants a gun (who doesn't genuinely require it for hunting etc.) People deserve to feel their kids are safe in school. Elderly people deserve to feel safe in their own homes alone and cops should be able to arrest people who they find carrying guns because they should simply be illegal just like they are in Europe etc.

Just check the figures in Australia. Proof that REMOVING guns REDUCES gun deaths. Once it is illegal to own and therefore carry a gun police can arrest a criminal on that offence too. Therefore if someone is going to break into your house to rob a few hundred dollars and risk one or two years in jail why carry a now illegal weapon and face god knows how long just for carrying one? That's why criminals here rarely carry guns unless involved in drugs and most gun deaths are drugs related and within gangs. The fact is less guns in Europe means less gun deaths and removal of guns from Australia have dramatically decreased gun deaths. Who can really argue that unless they are just going to miss the headlines about mass shootings?
