Bonham, Baker, Mitchell, and Moon beg to differ :P

You left out Jojo Mayer ;) easily my favorite technical drummer

I'll give you that Mayer didn't start into the music scene until 1982 but some of the ones you mentioned were still kicking around then

He can play a lot of styles well but he's very lazy when it comes to rhythms. He's gotten a lot lazier over the past 5 years or so in general, really.

But how complicated and technical do you have to be to play in Green Day?

There are literally thousands of drummers better than Starr, I was just naming a few of the big names from the 60s :P

You don't at all. To be honest I think he's wasted on Green Day, but still. There's 14 year old drummers covering Green Day on Youtube who do more inventive stuff than Tré does these days.

Haha yeah I totally agree with you that Starr is nothing special behind a kit. I just had to throw that name out there because Mayer is just crazy. Easily one of my favorite drummers to try and imitate

I guess I do have to give you that one...haha

If you're looking to get into a new drummer, check out Ben Johnston. He does some of the most insane stuff I've ever heard, all while singing harmonies and backing vocals.

Cool singing on some of the backing vocals. I'm hoping that there is some better drumming though as pretty much all of that video was relatively easy. I'll definitely look around for some videos though thanks for the tip

Yeah that's a relatively recent vid, it was just a good example of the vocals. Their earlier stuff is far more insane. He admits he doesn't even know the time sigs of half the songs off their first three albums :P

Anyway I won't spam up this thread anymore, pop over to the Biffy thread if you want some recommendations.

Tré is right handed but leads with his left, which is completely ass backwards, and he's twice the drummer Starr is.

Wow, I never knew that. How can you tell?

My brother told me  I've searched the internet though and it's legit. I'll ask him tomorrow. He was probably taught by a leftie, or had to learn using a leftie kit.

It's good to see him still staying publicly active. Idk why, but I see Tre as person who would be most willing to leave Green Day or even retire completely.

I didn't know kits had sides what does a lefties lot look like?

Everything is just set up in reverse.

He's pretty decent. Not exactly flashy but he's very tight, and infinitely better than Ringo.

Ringo is actually like Meg White.

Travis Barker ... long pause ... everyone else.

though Ringo is not an awesome drummer, he can be passable, like in that song which i think is maybe his best performance:

poor lad.

This is extremely cool!

"Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles."

This discussion about drummers seems very misinformed, Ringo Starr is one of the best and most inventive drummers ever, nobody plays like him (except perhaps Paul McCartney's current touring drummer, who is clearly influenced by Ringo). He was (and is) tight as a duck's arse, he never used a click, he played some of the most "melodic" drum parts, and set the standard for the rock drummer. It's become cool to hate on Ringo, but if you knew a thing about drumming and nuance and feel over technique, you could see that he's one of the best. I hate drummers like Travis Barker, all flash and no feel, Ringo, John Bonham and JP Gaster are where it's at.

Fun fact, Ringo recorded the backing track at double that speed, then they slowed it down to get a cool drum sound.

I love Ringo :P I just do not think he is very spactacular drummer. He did his job though. And is an exraordinarily awesome person.

I've played drums for 11 years and have studied multiple types of percussion and drumming in that time. I can tell you that Ringo is not an inventive drummer at all. He is the master of the backbeat and was able to keep time. I've even written some essays for classes about how Ringo was simply in the right place at the right time when he was asked to join the Beatles. Had he not been playing just down the street from the Cavern Club, he never would have been in the Beatles.

You're right, it has become a fad to hate on Ringo (and others compared to him like Meg White) but wether or not people hate on him you can't get passed the fact that Ringo is nothing special behind a drum set.

I do want to say for clarity that I do enjoy the Beatles and Ringo's solo career. I have seen Ringo perform with his All Starr Band twice and would go see him again if the opportunity came up because he is a novelty act. He's not a fantastic singer and he's aware of that because he has made jokes about it in interviews. But he puts on a fun show because like I said, he's a novelty act.

I love Tre drum set and really appreciate him as a punk drummer!

I love to listen to him and wish I could play so well a drum set.
