AV Club interview with comedian Jon Daly on why he hates "American Idiot"

I don't really like AI, I mean I'm glad it was made, just because it helped GD reach more fans and helped/changed people's lives. I just don't dig the whole vibe of the album, and the attitude. I also don't care for albums that carry a story throughout it. I don't have a problem with it I just think it is so focused on that people forget about Insomniac, Nimrod and such albums. I feel they are better and I like they way they were written, played, and the message in those songs. I mean we all are different, we all like different things, I may not love AI but I'm not going to dog GD for making it :P

It baffles me how any sane person can make claims based on misinformation and lies yet still act like first class golden shit.

What baffles me even more is those opinions to some people are somehow 'facts', yet can't draw up any evidence. Cunts.

He's a comedian. He doesn't give a shit about whether his information is correct or not, only that people find his reactions and what he's saying funny.

Believe it or not, opinions, especially about something as subjective as music, really don't need to be backed up by facts.

And of course they were anti bush, who wasn't back then?

Well, seeing as he got reelected in 2004 I'd say quite a few people weren't.

Oh yeah, no doubt about that, but saying American Idiot's musical was a cash-in? Where's this come from? That's not a sellout act, that's an artistic exploration.

I have a hatred towards people who make claims yet can't provide factual reasons why.

it baffles me how you're taking this so seriously, tbh.

i got like four paragraphs in and it wasn't even that funny so meh. from what i can tell he's missed the point of the song completely, so i don't understand why anyone really gives a shit.

it is weird that so many people are publicly hating on them this week though, have i missed something?

It's purely a matter of opinion. You can see it as a worthy telling of the story present in the album, or you can consider it a shallow cash-grab. Both are equally valid interpretations of the situation, because again, it's based on something very subjective.

Jon Daly is a cool dude. You could make a fair argument for his overall point on the album if you wanted to, but I mean obviously I'm a fan of Green Day and like to believe they're not completely hollow bastards. Whatever.

He has a sick beard.

My sister sent that to me, probably to wind me up and watch me go, but I didn't read it then and neither am I going to read it now, from what you all say it seems that there's a comedian who picked a Green Day song and was both mean and kind of funny about it , but basically misinterpreted the thing. The "real punk" and "sellout" argument has always seemed silly to me so there's no reason to get angry or to repeat things we've already discussed for the 100th time. Music is music and people like different kinds and there's no real or fake music and that's it.

I watched this documentary this other day and it suggested that something illegal was done, like uh, I don't know the expression in English, but not that many people really voted for him and the number of votes was changed?

I don't know if that's true, it could be lies for all I know, but I'm not American so I didn't really look into it.

Pearl Jam was attacking Bush Jr long before Green Day (Bu$hleauger and few other songs on Riot Act from 2002)

Favorite Son was from right around the same time tho wasn't it?

I think you're talking about vote rigging. It's possible, I don't think there was ever any clarity on it though. But if I recall correctly it was Ohio that was the problem, and even if they had given all of their votes to Kerry, Bush still would've won. So there still was a big bulk of people who supported Bush at the time.

Well if we're going with the idea that 21 bands represent a whole population, then I guess you're right.

21 quite major bands and pretty much all who attended shows and bought records.

Well, comedians hate pretty much everything, that's why they're comedians, so...

I was going to read it, to see if he "has" a point, but the actual point is that reading would be pointless.

The whole concept of the 'Hate Song' pieces just rubs me the wrong way. I just don't find hatred of anything very funny, idk.

Are we talking about bands or just the population in general? Because while I do agree that there seemed to be more anti-Bush mindsets than anti-Kerry ones in the music industry (at least the anti- Bush mindsets were more vocal about it), I still stand by my previous statement that overall there were more Bush supporters at the time.

Only because the majority were pro bush, that doesn't negate the other sides.

I agree. But that's not what I'm arguing.

Blah blah he is a comedian therefore everything he says must be funny? Not in this case. That was entirely dumb. Pretending to be completely clueless that Billie hates/has been very vocally opposed to the Bush administration (& republicans in general), suggesting he lives a stupidly lavish lifestyle in "San Diego" rather than Oakland (hardly known for its glitz and glamour), cares only about money and used the word "faggot" in an offensive manner is only amusing in the sense that someone could be so fucking stupid. Why doesn't the dude just rant about anti-American sentiment and all the bullshit Brandon Flowers came up with a few years back? I guess crazy Republican wing nuts will try any angle...this must be his. Interesting and lame...it looks like he hasn't quite grasped the art of understanding lyrics/listening to music.
