Z J Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 100% agree with this: What Green Day lacked in the Trilogy, in my opinion, was their "edge." Even in Warning, where they had more upbeat songs like Waiting and Minority, or experimental tracks like Blood, Sex, and Booze or Misery, they still had that punchy tone that I associate with the signature Green Day sound. (Maybe it's the distorted guitars?) Yeah that "edge" is exactly what I was missing in the trilogy (sound-wise, lyrics I don't even need to mention). It was a combination of vocal filters and guitar tone, at least that's the conclusion I (and others in here) have drawn. 2 Quote
Popular Post captain peroxide Posted May 12, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 12, 2015 The Trilogy is cleaner and more over-produced than anything they've put out before, which is pretty much the opposite of the formula that made them famous. Not surprised they didn't quite make it work. It's about edge, yes, but I think it's also about honesty, which was severely lacking on the Trilogy. The music felt less heartfelt, less earnest than anything they put out before. 6 Quote

Hermione Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Judge me all you want but I still like the production of the trilogy, being able to hear every element of the music/singing super clearly is awesome. 2 Quote
WhiteTim Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I still laugh at the folks who say the trilogy is over produced when AI 21st and even Dookie had more production work done to them than the trilogy Only thing that's overproduced is the vocals and that's cause of their lack of turning the levels down for that Quote
The Disappearing Boy Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Judge me all you want but I still like the production of the trilogy, being able to hear every element of the music/singing super clearly is awesome. Yeah, but wouldn't it be better if there were distorted guitars, though? Being able to hear all the instruments is nice, but the guitar on the Trilogy is just so weak. Quote

To be honest I don't really know what distorted guitars means or in what way that would sound different . But the guitar on there sounds alright to me. Quote

But the guitar on there sounds alright to me. I guess it's difficult to explain. It just kinda means a thicker heavier sound. Basically 90% of Green Day's catalogue has distorted guitars. Quote

Hermione Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I see, well in that case either way would be fine! Don't see how they sound that much worse to people really. Quote
captain peroxide Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Think of it as if the sound is coming through an old, worn out amplifier. As a guitar player, this hurt me deeply Hermione, this is the difference: Basically, a clean sound comes from pushing less power through the amplifier tubes, which causes the sound to break up less, and sound, well, cleaner. A distorted sound comes when you push more power through the tubes, which causes the sound to break up in uneven ways. You can control the level of breakup on most modern amplifiers with a dedicated control for it, but older amplifiers had to have the volume turned up very loud for that kind of breakup to occur. 4 Quote

captain peroxide Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Thanks for this! Sure thing! I could go on forever about it, but I won't What the band was going for was an AC/DC type sound, because while AC/DC makes relatively heavy-sounding music, their guitar sounds are actually quite a lot cleaner than most people realize. So that's the kind of thing Green Day were trying to emulate on the Trilogy. Quote
HARVESTER Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 The Trilogy did not lack anything except a good explanation, there was nothing wrong with their music. Quote
