Chin for a Day Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Anyone who says Jesus of Suburbia isn't a masterpiece is a fucking idiot. I will admit that I think Billie must have been drunk, or really overtired when he said that 99 Revolutions was the best song he's ever written, but JOS is sheer brilliance. Quote
Maid Meringue Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Remember that guy who said Sweet 16 was better? Fuck. Sweet 16 is my favorite song from Uno! But yeah I'm glad I wasn't around when that guy was active, I would have taken that statement personally. Quote

UNICORN VOMIT Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I am struggling to think of any song ever written that is better than JOS & its not even my favourite GD song. 2 Quote
unextraordinarygirl Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 JOS isn't my favorite song either. It's good but I don't know about brilliant. I read something an interviewer wrote once about Billie Joe being a child prodigy and I was thinking 'no not really'. He's a good song writer but no prodigy. Mozart was a prodigy not Billie. Quote

Dolphin Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 My brain is starting to hurt again JOS is phenomenal, IMO. Quote
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I wouldn't say it's necessarily my favorite song to listen to all the time, but if I had to pick what their "best" song was, objectively, it'd be hard to argue anything but JOS. It's just too epic, in the truest sense of the word. 1 Quote

Maid Meringue Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I love JOS, but I'd like to think that a track from Nimrod would be the best song they've written. Is JOS spectacular due to it's composition in length? Breaking the sections apart, they're just good. Quote

Is JOS spectacular due to it's composition in length? Breaking the sections apart, they're just good. For me, it goes beyond the music, length and lyrics. It's more of the entire concept — the introduction to the title character, the themes and overall feel of the album. To me, American Idiot (the song) is just a prologue, but JOS is the true beginning of the album. The punchiness of those first two lines makes it nearly impossible to not listen to the rest of the song. Beyond that, it was unlike anything the band had ever done to that point, and was definitely a risky move. So in the context of their careers, it's also epic in that regard. But once everything is tied together at the end of the album, with Letterbomb (the lines "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, etc.") and Homecoming (the line "We're coming home, again" contrasting with the line "You're leaving home"), it's impossible for me not to consider JOS the coolest fucking thing ever. Like I said, it doesn't mean it's the song I listen to most, but I don't understand how anyone can dislike it. 7 Quote

But it was a move that not only showed what the band was capable of, but that they were capable of things that very few bands were able to accomplish. The entire album elevated them to a totally different level. JOS is the epitone of that accomplishment. I agree that it is not the song I listen to the most, but when you talk of their greatness, it is the song you think of the most. There are very few bands that can write a song like that. One of them, The Who, recognized GD just this past week by saying how they liked their cover of A Quick One. That is quite an accomplishment. Quote

unextraordinarygirl Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I'm not saying AI itself isn't brilliant because it is. I still listen to it everyday. JOS just isn't my favorite song. I prefer Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and I love Homecoming. Quote
