The Disappearing Boy Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I'm not sure I can live in a world where a top 5 of Fell For You, Stay The Night, Nuclear Family, Kill The DJ and Rusty James in that order isn't universally accepted. I think I'd probably go along with that top 5. I like Let Yourself Go, but it's probably not top 5. I'd have a different order, though. Stay the Night, Kill the DJ, Nuclear Family, Rusty James and Fell for You. Mind you, the Demolicious version of Rusty James is better than the original. 1 Quote
Spike Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 that's a shame. Kill the DJ is annoying, Rusty James unmemorable and Stay the Night is nice but only nice. And Fell For You is musically dull andl lyrically horrible You're a harsh man. Granted the chorus of Kill The DJ is unimaginative but the verses are serious next-level stuff. Coming after Carpe Diem and Let Yourself Go in the running order probably makes it seem even better, but it's still amazing. I've said it before, but I really see it as their David Bowie moment, which can only be a good thing. Rusty James took forever to grow on me, and I can see why it can be considered unmemorable but I still love it. Stay The Night is pure genius though, and the live version from Reading 2012 is the second best thing in the history of Green Day, behind Basket Case at Reading 2005. The only thing I don't like about Fell For You is the bendy riff, but it's still far better than some of the stuff on the Trilogy overall. The Demolicious version is clearly better because that snare sound is orgasmic. That seems like a fair enough order too. Rusty James is actually the only song on Demolicious that I prefer the Trilogy version of. Quote

ifmemoryserves Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 when i first heard the live version of stay the night (before the triology was a thing at all) i loved it, but the studio version never really did anything for me. although i guess it's better than the majority of the trash on there. Quote

Exactly. Most people only look at it so favorably because of the crap it's mired in. "Well, Billie, you fed us shit for most of the album, but this is chocolate. It's cheap, sucky chocolate, but hey, at least it tastes like it's supposed to, kinda!" 2 Quote

Are you saying if you really love a song but it's on an album full of filler it makes the song less good? Because I have Stay The Night on my general Green Day playlist and it stands up to the highlights of every other album. 1 Quote

Z J Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 It goes: Stay the Night: Great verses with a classic Green Day sound. Solid enough chorus with nice runs. Relatable lyrics, not Billie's greatest, but still good. Elevated live. Nuclear Family: Best melody on Uno! Nonsensical lyrics. Filters dull out the vocal a bit but still solid. Rusty James: Solid melody, very good lyrics. Angel Blue: Killer solo, solid verses and chorus. Best bridge on album. Oh Love: Decent lyrics, great runs. "Heart on a noose" line is spectacular vocal-wise. Honorable mentions: Kill The DJ, Sweet 16. Quote

AmyxLongview Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 A thing that really bugs me about Oh Love: at around the 2:38 mark when he says "loose" there's some sort of glitch in the vocal that makes it sound really weird. And I notice it every time I listen to the song. 1 Quote

UNICORN VOMIT Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I've noticed that too! Slurring noise Just sounds like loose to me - I can't hear a a slurring sound - fell for you on the other hand sounds like he is singing with a mouthful of gum. The slurring sound at the start really annoys me. Quote

Clockwise Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Idk I just listened to Quadrophenia and it was pretty good, but I like UNO DOS and TRE a lot more. Quote

Spike Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Not disagreeing, but how is Kill the DJ a next level Bowie moment? Like...what part of it? Not being sarcastic, just curious. The lyrics in the verses. Obviously the chorus lets it down massively, but the verse lyrics just seem very Bowie-like, and I find it very easy to imagine him singing them. I'm aware it sounds like a bullshit theory, in fairness. I guess I have to concede that some people think it's great, then. I just genuinely don't understand why. Why *do* you like it so much? I know the chord progression is unoriginal, but I love it. The overall feel, the lyrics, the backing vocals in the chorus and just everything about the bridge are epic. Quote
Sauli Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Stay the Night is an utterly generic, though catchy, pop song and lyrically it could be a teen pop song. I love pop songs with simple love lyrics, but I can't see why Stay the Night is so special in that category. It is good but nothing spectacular. I gues you overrate it since its in the middle of complete shit and is itself at least a bit better than average. Quote
