Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Oh yeah. Well that doesn't count; the song sucks until the guitar part at the end comes in, then it immediately fades out. Why dey do dis?

Sucks? Harsh. I do think it is overrated (quite a few different places have it as the best song GD has pre-AI), but I like it. Obviously there's the bass, but I think the lyrics have a wonderful laziness to them that is just relatable. It's silly but not over-simplified like much of the trilogy. And I love the vocal in the chorus where he seems to almost jump up a key.

Well yeah, I love the bassline obviously, but the vocal melody is just too angular. The key does go from D to B in the chorus, which is why it sounds like there's a key change (because there is one), but it's just too hammy a key change for me to like it.

ahh.... Youtube... where the Green Day song covers are mostly so terrible that they are good....

Ever since I noticed that Billie doesn't pronounce the "T" in Castaway (he says "cassaway") I haven't been able to listen to it without noticing it.

I pretend he sings "Cassowary" which is a strange large bird.....even though I know better!

I don't care for Shenanigans....not in general, just the "album".

oh please, all by myself takes the cake here.

I don't think ABM is meant to be serious. Unless Tré has a thing for singing/writing songs about jacking off/sex, which I think he does. So, who the fuck knows

That's cause it's not an album lol

Why do you think its "hammy"? I think its impressive it isn't easy to hit the first note of that chorus

To me it comes across as weird and disconnected, like someone's suddenly changed to a different radio station or something. No doubt it takes skill to perform since you're suddenly singing in a totally different key, but while the contrast is very good it just seems too disjointed.

As we've discussed, Sassafras Roots is clearly the worst. :P

But seriously, Sassafras Roots is so fucking good. I actually really relate/connect to it emotionally, even though it's a simple, shitty 2-minute song.

Has any Green Day song ever had a fade out?

Also Longview is not only the best song on Dookie but the best song in Green Day's entire discography.

Longview is good, but there are many songs that are better than it. Much better. :)

I feel like it epitomizes the band somewhat, with it's mixture of darkness and humour set to a catchy melody and some quirkiness both in the music (with the jazzy bassline) and in the lyrics with the unusual take on the subject matter. Love their quirky side and just really like the sound of the song, for all those reasons it stands out as my favourite. Has plenty of very close competition though.

alright…well… no. :P

Not their best melody, vocal, or lyric. There are songs that beat them in all 3 categories on Dookie let alone the entire discography.

There is a difference between best song and favorite in my mind. If I'm making a favorite list the top 5 it would go:

JOS

Castaway

Good Riddance

J.A.R.

Holiday

But best would be:

JOS

Holiday

Good Riddance

Homecoming

21CB (or a host of other close songs)

Now, one could argue for days on either list but I do think it's possible to separate "best" from "favorite". Longview could be somones favorite song and that is far more reasonable than saying it is their best song.

The only thing I don't like about American Idiot is the over-the-top "emo" teenager vibe associated with the era. The prime example of that is the Jesus of Suburbia video, which I'm not really a fan of. :)

You'd get along well with 'Steven Seagull' on these forums!

I wish I had never seen that video either.....or WMUWSE ....or Nice Guys Finish Last... Last of the Americam Girls.....Stray Heart.... And oh yeah....Oh Love!

Shitty videos are much worse than no videos.

But, that's not the song's fault! I still love Jesus of Suburbia: it reminds me of my husband and his shitty teenage years.

I agree. Like Babs' Uvula Who? is my favourite song of theirs, but it's clearly not the 'best' by a long way.

Nah, Whatsername has to have the dumbest video of the lot.
