I have found I can't write the melodies to accompany my poems. Some one else has to collaborate with me That's happened to me whenever I try to write them separately. I can get a good chord progression but no words to fit it, or good lyrics with no music to fit. Things only really work when my head develops the two in tandem.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Sometimes it annoys me how is guitar playing perceived as a "man's work". My teacher calls his students "the boys". I'm the only girl in the class. I wouldn't mind but I noticed that when you're a gril, people expect you to be worse than the guys. People are rather surprised if you play well and you'll still perceived as somehow handicapped. Mom and I went to see Against Me! a while ago and she thought that a "real girl" would never be able to play that well. When a guy is good, he's good. When a gril is good, she plays like a guy. I shouldn't complain because it's worse with other instruments like drums but it still bugs me a little.

You still have every bloody right to complain even though it might be worse with others, any sexism deserves complaining about to say the least.

There are still a lot of gender stereotypes in the music world. It should bug you. Good for you for sticking with guitar!! This is just a totally random and useless musical factoid! My son is studying voice, and I am his accompanist. He pointed out to me that he learned that when you take a breath, your mouth should already be in the shape of the vowel that you are going to sing after the breath. So I was watching more recent Green Day performances (2012-2014) and I noticed that Billie Joe does this...I had suspected that he had lessons, and now I'm convinced, because doing this is a technique that requires practice. His breath support is great too. Just throwing that out there, vocal techniques 101.

I'll experiment with this the next time I'm in shower.

I'm pretty sure he took lessons when he was preparing for Broadway, but I wouldn't be surprised if he took them before that. I think once he hit Nimrod his vocal technique started to improve, but with AI and beyond, it really improved.
Libertine Angel Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 You know what's annoying? When you come up with a chord progression you really want to play really fucking loud but it's 10:37 PM.
JackInABox86 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Recently mixed and mastered a pop punk track, check it out and give feedback
GenXIdiot Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Hi, my son is singing in a competition today, and I am his accompanist, so please think good thoughts and good lucks for us. He is singing O Del mio Dolce Adore by Gluck, Widmung by Shumann and Roadside Fire by Ralph V. Williams. He's 17 and has a beautiful baritone voice! I'm so excited for him! Thanks everybody, I'll keep you posted...if he wins 1st or 2nd he wins money and he gets to perform at a Winner's Recital at Binghamton University tomorrow night! They'll call us with results tonight!

So we don't get to perform at the recital. He's disappointed and so am I, but he'll get judges notes to find out what the judge thought, so he can do better next time.

Lone Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I feel like a lazy player when I grab the ukulele instead of the guitar.

I'm planning to put them on youtube when I get round to it. I'll post the videos when they're up Good luck tonight! What will you play?
Not a Salad Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Finding a bassist is hard. Drummers, though, a bit easier. Scratch that, much easier. For ever 100 drummers I know, there's 1 bassist. I know 5 drummers. Well, at least where I'm at that's how it is.

The chorus is doing an arrangement of Beach Boys "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "You Can't Stop the Beat." from Hairspray. Easy stuff, and the students are really nice, so it'll be low key Younger son has a solo in the Hairspray one, too.
