Maybe you could try practicing the strumming rhythms and add the left hand only when you've nailed the strumming. I think it could help.

Thank you for the ideas. I just might keep trying, you are inspiring me.  I think my problem is I'm left handed, but when I was a kid I tried some lessons for a while, and  I first learned to play it right handed, because no one thought to check if I should flip it over! So my left hand is really good (notes and chords) but my strumming and picking is for shit, lol.  Maybe I'll look up some Radiohead, that's a good idea. :)

I think Janes idea might work.  Try the strumming patterns and then switch to the left hand.  I would recommend starting with Brain Stew, but at a much lower BPM.  It is very easy and the strum pattern is a standard one.  Creep by Radiohead is the easiest song I have ever played, but the strum pattern is slightly unusual.

I need some tips.  The place where I take guitar lessons has instituted a policy to try and measure their guitar teachers effectiveness.  Basically, they started a skill test for the students, similar to belts in karate.  Each teacher has to get a certain amount of students to a certain level or it will affect their pay or maybe even their job.  To get to the next level, the student needs to go to a jam session.  My teacher has 51 students and guess who he has asked to do this?  I never had any attention of ever playing in public.  I play for my own enjoyment.  I am literally terrified but I really don't want to screw my guitar teacher because I absolutely adore him.  He has asked me to play Basket Case, which isn't a problem normally, but I'm getting panic attacks thinking about it.

Any tips on playing in front of an audience??

When I had to perform for GCSE Drama (which I failed but let's forget that :P) my main thought was "the audience doesn't know what's supposed to happen, it's fine to fuck up if you pretend you meant to do it". Half of a good stage presence comes from acting as if you know you're good - just look at Joe Strummer, all he actually did was hit chords and shout but the Clash were incredible live because they acted like they knew they were.

So I should actually pretend that I know how to play???

Even better if you actually do :P Making the assumption that you're going to be great is halfway towards actually doing it, there's actually an indie band called Sisteray I know who completely epitomise it - check them out on YouTube if you like, the guitar player is actually not very good but they have a brilliant live atmosphere because he acts like he's brilliant anyway.

Thanks, that actually helps, alot.  I guess I have to figure if my guitar teacher picked me out of 51 students, I must be better than I think I am.

No problem; that's definitely a good sign, if their pay depends on who they pick to do this then they'd pick someone they knew could do it, so you definitely can, and you can panic all you want beforehand because the audience will never know. Carl Barat still gets stage anxiety and he's been touring the world since 2002, that's nothing to worry about and you'll be perfectly fine.

I've played in front of audiences a lot lately - even every two weeks or so because my school organises tons of concerts and forces us to play and I completely got rid of all stage fright. All you need is to learn to give a shit about the audience and enjoy yourself just like you do at home. I don't know who will be in the audience but most people don't mind if you fuck up at this kind of shows, they usually don't even listen too closely. Just play, and don't worry about anything. It will be a new, interesting and and rewarding experience. You'll get a taste of what performing is like and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The enjoyment does come with experience and being used to it. I have fun from playing in front of people (and I'm satisfied with myself afterwards) even when I play badly.

And Jimmy is right. Your teacher has chosen you for a reason and the reason is that he trusts you.

My influences are scattered all over the place I suppose... But certain covers I have done inspire me to go it Garv similar direction

Next month I'm playing in front of a paying audience for the first time. Hopefully it won't be the last time as well!

That's great! You're going to love it! What do you play? Are you singing, too?

It's the best feeling in the world, I love performing.

BTW I learned Pulling Teeth on ukulele, too :D

I'll be playing some classical guitar pieces in a duo with a flutist. It'll be our teacher's concert and he let us play before him.

 me too you can be an attention whore and pretend you're doing the GREAT ART.

I like ukulele covers. Btw how do you play ukulele? It's the same as guitar but withought the two lowest strings, isn't it? If you can play ukulele, you'll nail the guitar in no time

Sounds beautiful, I love classical guitar! In our house we  always say "Break a string!" instead of a leg for guitar, so, Break a string!

Ukulele tuning is weird, it's like banjo with a high string where a low string should go. They are tuned G(above middle C), middle C, E above middle C, A above middle C. I just use a chord chart. It's easier than guitar because it's so small, and I just hack away at it, it's fun.  I'm still not going to give up on guitar. Right now though I have too much piano music to learn to really practice anything else. My son is entering a vocal competition next month and mom gets to accompany :D

Thank you! I've got a lot of practice ahead of me this month :)

That's interesting. I've never played it but I'd like to try...good luck to your son!

LOL here is a few measures of Blood Sex and Booze on the ukulele. Like my caption says. I'm a pianist, not a singer! :)

OK here is a little sample of my piano. I do hope there's more piano on the new album!

That was great!  You should do a piano cover of Whatsername for the contest.

Thanks!! I was thinking that excact thing, but I am trying to convince younger son to sing it, too, if we can have guest artists on these covers...he is a much much better singer than I!  That is my favorite song on AI, and maybe my favorite GD song of all...or at least tied with Blood Sex Booze  LOL

So I'm pretty good at writing songs, lyricism kind of just flows out of me, but I can never seem to get the music to match correctly. I have found I can't write the melodies to accompany my poems. Some one else has to collaborate with me

Just keep working at it, start of with really simple and basic music to accompany it then when you're happy you can start making it a bit more complex if you wish :)
