Random Musician Thoughts

First off, this site looks really weird. Also, does anyone know anything about the drum set brand ddrums? My friend has a set that he wants to sell and it looks nice, but I can't find anything about it online.

I know James Kottak from the Scorptions, and Vinnie Paul from Pantera use ddrums. Have you tried it?

No, I'm never at his house long enough to arrange them. (They aren't set up.) Someday I'll stay the night and do it.

Just had to post my clarinet on eBay today. It's a sad day for me. :(

I hate the fact that i'm still not used to playing guitar standing up. Does anyone else have a problem with that? I keep adjusting the strap to try different positions, but they're all just not right. My wrists are just in this super awkward angle, and the pick too. If anyone has any tips on how to get better at that, i'd love to hear your thoughts!

Also, this is a random comment, but i'm getting my first Gibson this week hopefully! The 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker, either in the TV Yellow finish or the Charcoal finish! Super stoked to own an actual quality guitar, since the one i have i bought for 100 AED, which is about 20$? Its a Stratocaster knock-off, and i have a deep love-hate relationship with it. I'll put out pictures when i get it!

That's a pretty common problem that a lot of people have. I used to adjust the strap while I was sitting so it was at the same position when I stood up.

I just realized how bad i am at songwriting. The last song i wrote was a cheap ripoff of Amoeba by the Adolescents

Band stuff may be moving again. Asked a mate to drum for us, first rehearsal hopefully this sunday!

Why do I have to focus on just one instrument? If I want to play Hans Chritisan Anderson, Joseph Haydn, Hans Zimmer, etc. I can if I want to!

Shawn told me I can't have a drumset today, so that's what fueled this.

I'm getting a drumset.

Looks as if the band is fizzling out before it even got going. The drummer got a job where he's on call 24/7 so he left. The other 2 just seem to have no motivation to do it (even had a replacement drummer lined up). Any practice I try to organise, there's always something. So I'm ready to throw in the towel.

however there is a silver lining. My cousins band is having a similar issue, we are talking about getting something going, merging the 2. Means taking a back seat as far as song choice/ style / organisation goes. But I am perfectly happy to do that! Going to have a talk this weekend, see if we can work something out

I used to try to practice standing up but it made my shoulders hurt really bad, but I feel like a jackass having the strap tightened enough to make it comfortable for me to play cuz then the guitar is up close to my chest and it's supposed to be by your hips, apparently. I'm just so small and it's a big instrument, it's awkward

Anyway, does anyone know of any custom guitar shops where I could send them an idea and they would make it for me? I want a guitar shaped like a penguin.

I'm sure there are plenty of places that can make a custom guitar for you, but can you afford a custom guitar?  I'm sure it will cost alot.

I have a parlor acoustic because regular sized ones are too big.  Have you tried that or getting junior guitars?

I'll save up. It's a PENGUIN guitar, I'll wait 20 years to get it

Really want to learn to vocalise. I am so inexperienced, any time I've done it has been an off the cuff attempt and an absolute disaster. Actually considering looking for lessons. I think if I want to do it right, I need to focus on the vocals alone before bringing in the guitar.

Anyone got got any tips for me? So insecure with my voice and really have no idea what I'm doing in terms of key, range, breathing hell even style,

Lessons. The  few voice lessons I took helped so much in terms of knowledge and confidence. My primary fear was that I had a shitty voice, which was partly what was holding me back. The external validation of hearing a professional say I had a good voice was a huge relief in and of itself. After that, it was just learning greater control. I'd still be taking lessons if I had the time. Still might, someday.

Someone else's trained ear is going to be the most helpful thing for you.

It's raining profusely and I have to open the window, which is right next to my guitar rack, to smoke, and water was splashing like a foot into my window and I actually said "Get away from my guitars, you bitch!" I need help.

*double post, apparently there are not many musicians here*

I just tuned all my guitars by ear. All I had to do was think of Minority, the first note, where Billie sings the word "I", and done! That's a perfect E, so I tuned my guitars to that, the E note. Apparently I have (nearly) perfect pitch, and never knew it. I'm proud of myself.

Did you check it with a tuner afterwards?

Yep. I was just slightly sharp by a smidgen (love that word lol) but was incredibly close to what my phone tuner said was right.

Watch, my phone tuner is probably wrong

I spent the past two days at an honors band music clinic which was really cool because I've never done anything like that before. Your school's band director picks the best players in the band and you go and learn five or six pieces in a day and a half and then have a performance at the end of the second day. It was also my first time actually auditioning for something, which was pretty nerve-wracking and I did end up placing in the lower band but it was fine because I was one of the best percussionists in there and honestly, the percussion parts for the symphonic (lower) band were much cooler than the parts the percussionists in the wind ensemble got.

Like, I played on all four pieces we performed at the concert, and I played snare, bass drum, bells, and marimba, while my buddy who got placed in the higher band played triangle and crash cymbals and the parts were pretty boring so...I'm pretty happy about it! It was a good experience and I had fun.

Was asked to do an open mic on December 4th for a music school I went to one summer. My cousin has offered to back me up. Think I might do it, 2 or 3 songs sure what is the harm.

Thinking of doing the following:

Mountains - Biffy Clyro

In My Head - QOTSA

searching for something else, maybe a Chilli Peppers song, Green Day or try reinterpret something poppy

Got an offer to be in a band. A pop-punk band. Don't know if I want to do it. Met up with the guy, showed him a few riffs and he asked me to write something on the spot. Came up with some of the best riffs I have written, they were all too "hard rock" for him if I touched an E or an F chord. I don't know if I can deal with limitations like that. Didn't help that he seems to think a pop punk band can actually make it big if they follow a formula.... It's just far too delusional for me I think. Kinda desperate to get gigging but I kinda feel I would be severly lowering myself artistically. I am not the best guitarist but this just. I want to be with musicians that push me to better. Not make me regress
