bollard_11 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I need to join a gigging band immediately. My thoughts exactly! I really need to devote more time to guitar. Really regressed in skill level, mainly due to being so busy in college. Seriously changing this summer
bollard_11 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 When you answer an ad to join a band because I knew the girl through a mutual friend. My skill level is well above that of the rhythm guitar player. The style is Green Day pop punk, I can play that shit in my sleep, especially thelead. I tried to organise jam sessions, hell I even offered a space to jam. Never responds. Now she posts another advert looking for a guitar player. Probably not worth my time chasing this. So I posted a sarcastic reply. Shes probably on this forum. Don't care. A little respect would be nice
Eva Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I've spent the past hour emailing everyone I could find on Craigslist in my area looking for a rock/punk/alternative drummer or bassist. God, I hope one of them gets back to me. I feel like I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because I'm 17 and underage and I can't drive. But I've been dying to be in a serious band since I was eight years old and the past three bands I've tried to put together have failed in less than three months because no one else is serious enough to even meet once every two weeks for a practice session. I just want to make music with some people, man.

I can't find people willing to play with me and if I do they either only play covers, expect me to teach them or we can't find time to meet. Hope you'll be lucky. You have at least two instruments, that's an advantage. How come you can't drive? I thought you were allowed to do that in US since you're 16. Or does this apply only in some states?

I just don't have my license yet. But I'm 17 so I can get it but there's a lot of stuff I'd need to do and I haven't gotten around to it.

Honestly, it's scaring the shit out of me.
Spike Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 I've got offers to join bands coming out of my ears. Seven in one day. Too much choice now, I don't know what to do
captain peroxide Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Join all of them. Figure out which ones are better / more promising, and drop out of the rest.
Spike Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Join all of them. Figure out which ones are better / more promising, and drop out of the rest. Not a bad idea, that. Do you reckon I should be open with them all from the off or keep it to myself so I don't sound non-committal?

Be open, if you can. I'd just say you want to jam for a while and see how it goes, and then make your final decision a little down the line. If they're cool, they'll be cool with it. Listen to their music, if they have any, decide if it's something you want to be a part of. Nothing wrong with being in multiple bands, either. I'm in two, half the people in my bands have another one of their own, a friend of mine is in 4 bands, etc. You just gotta make time for it.

I'll check them all out properly and give it a good think, I just feel kind of overwhelmed (in a good way) right now I've never done the whole multi-band thing before but if I can make it work I'm up for giving it a shot.

It's fun because it means there doesn't have to be one outlet for your music creativity. One of my bands is a little heavier musically and somber in tone, the other is more straightforward alternative rock, but it's more fun, etc etc. Trying to make it all work in one band doesn't always yield the best results.
JackInABox86 Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I'm in two bands and doing acoustic stuff with a girl, we have 2 hour sessions every week at a local community centre it's great
bollard_11 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 we have 2 hour sessions every week Do you guys find time to play music aswell? I cannot wait to get going in this project. The other guitarist and bassist are so serious about it, whereas me and the drummer just wanna have a bit of fun, see what happens. Stylistically unsure if this will be heavy or punky. I'm good with either but will really change my gear usage and writing approach! We have a studio booked on the 29th for 4 hours for a jam session. Looking forward to that

captain peroxide Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I'm gonna be getting one of these fuckers in a couple of weeks, and I'm extremely excited about it.

captain peroxide Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 That's a mighty fine looking toaster you've got there. HIGH GAIN TOAST Good album name. Seriously though, look up some demo videos, it's a Yamaha THR10. King of all practice / home recording amps.

bollard_11 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Started recording some footage of local bands as a hobby. Releasing my first promo trailer today. Check it out if you get a chance! This promo video for my friends 2 piece band and their EP launch. They asked me to make it silly. I thought the kazzoo noises were a bit over the top but it was what they wanted.
Spike Posted May 14, 2015 Author Posted May 14, 2015 I'm feeling really positive about one of the bands I'm auditioning for. Their original stuff sounds really good so I've been learning some of it, and they gave me some covers to learn - Stockholm Syndrome by Muse, Just by Radiohead and My God Is The Sun by QOTSA, all of which I've played before in my old bands. There's also a covers band I'm gonna try out for, all the guys in it are like 50+ but they're doing Green Day, FOB, All Time Low, MCR etc. Should be interesting.
Eva Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I've decided I want to try and pick up banjo again. I got really into it a few years ago and then stopped suddenly and now I want to get into it again. I've been trying to learn Mumford and Sons' "The Boxer" because their banjo parts are fairly easy in the overall scheme of things, but God, I can't play anywhere near as fast as I used to. It's killing me. Practice makes perfect though!
Libertine Angel Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Anyone else have the problem of having most of what they write come out with the virtually same vocal melody? 'Cause I do, it's really annoying to get partway through something and then realise that I've once again accidentally stolen Babyshambles' Picture Me In A Hospital. I think I've shaken it for what I'm doing now, but that's partially ripping off bits of Going Underground (but with this I'm basically trying to be Paul Weller so I suppose that's understandable).

This happens pretty often to me. When I come up with an idea I always play it, listen and check if I'm accidentally ripping of somebody or myself first then continue writing or incorporate the idea into the original song if it doesn't happen to be stolen I think this must be pretty common with less experienced songwriters, or at least I think the more practice you have the easier you work so you perhaps learn to avoid this with time.
