Drums

I loved playing the drums. Only ever played on my cousins kits and the disgusting ones at school, I can bash out a few green day songs though

The drummer in our wind band is really bad, he can't even do simple rhythms/count and he always messes up during concerts too which is so annoying! He's all we have right now though, but I'd love a full percussion section :(

He def has the drummer stereotype of playing loudly when it's not needed, especially during breaks :P

I'm currently rocking a Pearl Vision kit with Sabian cymbals and a Iron Cobra double kick pedal. I've had that kit for 6 out of the 11 years I have been playing drums

Nice. The drummer in my last band broke a brand new Neil Peart signature stick on its very first hit once.

So my band is in the Studio for the next week, we did 8 hours worth of dialing in sounds yesterday and today we're gonna start recording. I'm pretty damn happy with my drumsounds and I haven't broken anything yet :D

I got a drum set for free from my parents' friends that moved away. Here's a picture, here's another picture, and here's an awkward time-lapse. Now that I think I'd like to do more with drums, should I save my money up and buy a whole new set, or just buy the parts that I want/need? I mean, there's nothing really wrong with this set. It's just not in great condition.

Also, I'd like a cowbell.

Sweet, free drumset.

From what I can see, the material doesn't look too bad. I would't spend money on another kit, as you won't really see improvements right away if you don't know much about drums.

The drumheads don't look too good, so I'd start with fresh heads if you want to invest some money. Also try setting them up better, the way they are set up right now is really uncomfortable.

Another thing to consider is a second cymbal, preferably a ride cymbal. That would add a lot to your playing. But drumheads should be your first investment if you really wanna get into drums.

Thanks for answering! How much do you think drum heads would cost? How should I set up the drums? And yeah, I want a ride cymbal.

Do you know the sizes of your drums? From the pictures I would guess you have a 20" kick drum, a 12" rack tom, a 14" floor tom and a 14" snare drum (all diameters). I'd estimate new heads all around would run you about $150.

My recommendations:

- Kick drum: A new batter head will be enough. Remo Powerstroke III heads are THE choice here. Evans Emad would be another option, but they are more expensive

- Snare drum: Batter Head should be a Remo Powerstroke III, coated. Not the favorite head for every one, but it is easy to get a decent sound out of it with little experience in drum tuning. Resonant head: A remo Ambassador snare side (very important to get the snareside one as they are much thinner. Regular heads won't work here). I'd also consider new snare wires, those play a big part in your sound. Gibraltar make good stuff for very reasonable prices.

- Toms: I'd get Remo Pinstripes or Evans EC2 heads (Evans being more expensive again). Like with the snare, those aren't really crowd favorites, but they deliver a nice sound without too much hassle, and they can take a beating. If you have money left, get new resonant heads too. Remp Ambassador is a good choice. Those will affect your sound quite a bit, but you could save some money here for the start.

As for the setup: I'll snap a few quick pictures once I get around to setting my drums up again. They're still all packed up from a show I played on saturday. Won't be until Wednesday though, sorry.

Thank you so much! I haven't measured the drums, but I will before buying anything. Will I need to tune the drums after getting new heads?

Yeah you will. Do you know how to do it?

I haven't the slightest idea.

I haven't the slightest idea.

I would explain but I just realised YouTube is full of decent videos on it. Just search for "how to tune drums" and pick one!

Alright, thank you. It'll probably be a while before I buy new heads anyway.

Tuning is just a matter of experience. The gust is that you want to try to get the exact same pitch at every tension rod, and nice relations inbetween batter and resonant head.

I still have your setup in the back of my head, I just haven't actually been drumming for like 10 days cause I screwed up my wrist and I can't even really brush my teeth without beeing in pain right now :(

Yo, so I finally got to play again a few days ago. Wrist still is in pain, but I refuse to wait any longer :D

Basically, I'd start setting up just the Kickdrum and the hihat with their pedals. Place them in a way that makes them comfortable to reach with your feet while keeping an even balance on the drum throne. Seat height should be adjustet so that you have an angle slightly bigger than 90 degrees inbetween your thighs an calves with your flat feet on the pedals.

Next thing is the snare drum. Place it in a distance from you that allows you to comfortably hit the center of the drum and at a height that allows you to hit rimshots and normal stroks with your legs in action. Adjust the Hihat height accordingly to guarantee enough space for your snare hand.

Next step should be the toms. Place the floor tom at a comfortable height as high or a little lower as the snare drum and pretty close to you. you need to find a compromise inbetween hitting th center comfortably and still having stace for your kickdrum leg. The racktom should be infront of you, maybe a little to the right. I have it on a seperate stand in my pics, but you can achive the same position with a kickdrum mount.

Finally the cymbals: I'd angle them slightly towards you at a comfortable height. The ride cymbal should be a little lower than your hihat, a crash should have the edge inbetween nipple and shoulder height when sitting upright.

of course, all that's just starting points, go figure out what you like from there.

Hey guys, I play a lot of stuff but drums are my favorite instrument. I rock a white pearl soundcheck with Sabian Xs20 cymbals. I primarily use a 16" floor tom, thin 14" steel vic firth snare drum, and a 22" kick drum. I'll occasionally throw in a 12" rack tom as well. My cymbals consist of 14" medium hi hats, 18" medium thin crash, and medium 20" ride. I have Evans G2 coated heads on my toms, a remo reverse dot on my snare, and aquarian superkick II for my kick drum. I also have a cowbell, shaker, tambourine and a Toca cajon.

I play drums in a band called The Rumps (look em up if you want) in Tennessee. It's a band in the early stages though. A band in it's even earlier stages is my own band that I do all the instruments for. Its what my avatar and username is afilliated with. Havent made any music yet though, getting singing down. It'll be a while, but itll happen.

Anyway, this thread needs to be more active :P I can post pics of my crap later, but I'd love to see more Green Day fans' drum gear.
