Bass Guitar

I like playing bass. Its the only way for me to unwind nowadays. I won't consider myself good cos I don['t know anything about the technicalities and such. I started learning from GuitarPro, playing along with it. But since my interest was mostly in Green Day, I tried to learn most of their songs.

My bass is a Yamaha knock off but I am happy with my instrument as it does the job. (The cost of an original Fender, Yamaha is really great compared to the foreign markets.)

If you ask me about my tunings, my strings and such, I would have to say, I don't know shit. But I like to rock when I play!

Electric guitar was here; bass guitar is a loser

i've been dying to learn bass for years, at 14 i asked for one for Christmas but my dad said no as 'it's a mans instrument and no one cares about it anyway'.

Kim Deal, Kate Nash, Melissa Auf der Maur, Eva Gardner, Lori Black, Adele, Jennifer Arroyo, Charlotte Cooper, Sheryl Crow, Maya Ford, Gail Ann Dorsey, Kimberley Dahme, Peggy Foster, Kim Gordon, Este Haim, Natalie Maines, Aimee Mann, Zia McCabe, Nikki Monninger, Suzi Quatro, Micki Steele, Ivana Vujic, Lyn-Z... :ermm:

Bass isn't very hard to teach yourself. At least, that's what I found with the basics. Reading tabs and stuff is super easy, so if you just start with simple songs (the first song I learned was Smells Like Teen Spirit) and watch videos, you can teach yourself the basic stuff with no problem.

yeah that's what i tried to do with guitar, failed miserably. :P hopefully i can manage it with bass, but tbh i think lessons might be the best route for me. i'm not good at learning without someone there to properly show me & correct me if i'm doing it wrong, y'know?

i instantly thought of that! idk i could happily listen to someone playing bass all day. my ex was an amazing bassist, he's been in several magazines & recently got signed i do believe. i'd sit there for hours just listening to him practice, was amazing.

Cool! It's such a damn awesome instrument with such a wide range of possibilities, I don't see how anyone could ever get bored of it. I played bass in a Muse tribute band for 5 years and it was good to get some attention from that :P Then when I got more into playing pop punk no one gave a shit, because even Mike's stuff sounds easy even though it's not, and the first time anyone cared after that was when I was playing the two-note bass solo in No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age. The rest of the song is a nightmare and that bit's ridiculously easy, so that says it all :P

ugh yeah, the idea of learning stuff sounds terrifying. i'm a total mong, my dyslexia fucks up my memory & dyspraxia means i'm shit with my hands but i dunno, i still really want to try?? might be a total waste of time & money but i just wanna give it a shot. if i fail, i fail but at the same time failing scares the poop outta me

It's not that bad really, if you start with Blink 182 songs there shouldn't be a problem :P I've got dyspraxia and my hands are shit as a result, but playing bass has actually really helped that. It's definitely worth a go! And if you do fail, which you won't, no one will know anyway, right?

blink are easy i take it? knowing me i'd focus on a lot of GD stuff, but i have no idea how hard that is! eh, the only person i'd tell is my mam & Josh, other than that.. you have a compelling point :sherlock:

Blink have a few reasonably challenging songs on bass, but dozens of their songs have the same chord progression, and most of their biggest hits are literally just three notes. Green Day stuff varies massively; American Idiot is one of the easiest albums ever to play, but Dookie is pretty challenging and a lot of Insomniac is crazy.

ok this is how little i know about music. idk what the difference between a note & chord is  oh god. in which case, i'll stick to Blink/AI when i start, keep things simple. what about Warning? is that album pretty complicated? it's my favourite album is all :P

Warning might take a bit of practice but it's not too bad for the most part. Minority and the title track are great fun to play and are a really good tool for learning scales.

A note is, well, an individual note, and a chord is a group of three or more notes played at the same time. The lowest note of a regular chord is called the root, and in a lot of music that's the note that the bass plays while the guitar plays the chord.

I'm seriously thinking about selling my Italia. The plus sides of it are that it looks absolutely incredible (see the spoiler below) and is super-rare. They're not available new in Britain anymore (in fact I can't find new ones anywhere online anywhere but the US) and they only pop up second hand on eBay very, very occasionally. The downsides are that it's too heavy (spinal stenosis plus a heavy bass is just a total no-go), the playability is shocking, there are very few tonal options and it's preposterously quiet to say it has four pickups. Every time I reach for a bass I go for my Dirnt, Thunderbird or Warwick, but never this one unless I'm playing very simple stuff live and just want to show it off. No-brainer, right? I got it massively discounted so could easily make at least a 50% profit. But again, it's super-rare and looks awesome. Hmm.

Does look pretty damn good. Is there anything you could do to improve the playability? I don't know about making it lighter, but could you change the pickups? Improving it would probably increase its price a fair bit - especially as it's rare.

I've tried everything I can when it comes to playability, so not really =/ As for changing the pickups, it's got four side-mounted lipstick pickups, which are not only its main feature given that such a setup is very rare, but there's nothing I'd be able to swap them out for =/

i've been dying to learn bass for years, at 14 i asked for one for Christmas but my dad said no as 'it's a mans instrument and no one cares about it anyway'. i soon gave up on that dream :P but i've been eyeing up Mike's signature bass, it's so beautiful. i tried to learn guitar like a year ago but i sucked so hard at it. only tried it because a guitar was in the house, never really cared for guitar. always been a bass girl.

just gotta somehow get the money for a somewhat decent beginner bass, and find someone to teach me to play..

also Mary you look bloody amazing holding that bass, in the least pervy way possible.

CERI CERI CERI YES COME ON BE THAT BASS GIRL

Teaching yourself how to play it is quiet easy, still I am glad to have my boyfriend motivate me and show me all the tricks, buuuuut you can do it on your own, no problem at all if you don't have a mate who plays bass.

Also I can highly recommend the Toby Bass Package by Epiphone, it's so damn cheap. Plus my bf tested it on friday and said the sound was killer and that he's never seen a bass of such great quality for a price that low.

i just googled it and DAMN SON that's cheap! :o it's a killer looking bass, especially for that money. i've got a bit of a money stealing project going at the moment but as soon as i get some spare cash i'm so getting that! gotta find a decent way to teach myself too

I played an Eva Gardner Precision Bass today and oh my god, I'm totally trading my Italia in for one. I should be able to get the bass and a new amp with the money from the Italia. This thing is damn sexy. :runaround:
