Those are drugs as well.

Hence the name "prescription drugs"!

As I said not trying to nitpick but the connotations of "drugs" and "prescription drugs" are two different things and this always comes up!

Prescription drugs can be very dangerous drugs.

Absolutely

In my opinion it's far more likely Booze that loosens the tongue (and of course booze is also a drug as is caffeine)

That's true. However, I think one way to overcome the stigmatization of so-called illicit drugs is not making the distinction.

But prescription drugs prescribed by a doctor aren't illicit. Should you take more than you should as Billie described - absolutely not. I think we're talking about two different things here. I'm not talking about people who acquire those types of drugs illicitly and neither did Billie say he was

I know they're not illicit. That said, I don't see why that should matter. The distinction of illicit and non-illicit drugs is only a legal construct based on an arbitrary decision that only perpetuates the stigma around addiction. I see no point in furthering this power structure by using the language it created, so in this context, I deliberately use the word drug as an umbrella term for any substance being abused.

This isn't really what I'm talking about or getting at. Basically I think it's not right right to say "I think the drugs are a mitigating circumstance" (as you did) in response to past behaviour by Billie when we know nothing of the kind. Maybe I should just have said that in the first place.

You used to be able to order cocaine and heroin from a Sears catalogue or something, complete with the tools (like syringes) to use them. Laudanum was put on a pedestal as a fix-all drug for children. The chemicals have't changed, only the legality surrounding usage. Prescription drugs can still be just as dangerous if abused or combined with other substances.

I'm still so fucking thankful we still have Billie around. It could easily have gone a different way. I guess that last part is my random GD thought. Maybe let's stop talking about drugs now?

Fair enough, he was still responsible for his actions.

The Regrettes have a new single out called You’re So Fucking Pretty. How are they able to do that when Father Of All Motherfuckers had to be shortened to Father Of All… for both the song and the album title? I don’t understand these rules.

I suppose The Regrettes aren’t involved with the same media outlets. You can get away with it online but not on TV. (I guess? I’m at a loss to understand the US approach to profanity in public.)

I find it hard to believe they would choose to do that when they don’t censor their lyrics. The way Billie tells the story, he designed the album cover with the title and the powers that be told him “You can’t call it that” so he said then just put a fucking unicorn over it. He didn’t want to censor his title, and he told DJs that Father of All Motherfuckers was the title.

Possibly due to the expectations they will not get the same level of media coverage.

My point is why do they have do that when other bands don’t. I don’t think it’s because they choose to, more like they’re told they have to.

Warner has released several albums with the f word uncensored (sure they are also rap albums but thats besides the point) why would they allow other artists to do so but not GD? Make it make sense…

GD is still a band that wants to market and they know having cuss words so freely hurts sales

personally I wouldn’t put it past that they did the censored cover on the regular edition and used the uncensored cover for their store exclusive vinyl… but I’m a cynical person lol

Well that’s not the way he tells it anyway so we’ll just have to agree it doesn’t make sense and leave it at that.

@jengd ‘s theory is more plausible that they have less freedom if they want to be promoted in major markets. But that sets low expectations for other bands that get away with it and could still have a surprise hit

For what it's worth YSFP is uncensored on Spotify but censored on Apple Music. My guess is that if it's being released on a major label, they're going to want it consistent across platforms so they censor it by default. Makes promotion easier, ect.

I remember when Terry Gross interviewed Billie in 2011 they introduced AAF as "Awesome As... well, I can't say the rest on the radio" or something like that.

All majors (at least) do have issues with explicit titles being used for album names tho as it does severely limit where they can advertise the album (radio won’t air ads magazines won’t print ads social media won’t show ads with the words unedited) so they do advise not to use explicit words as titles but so far Warner and others seem to release them regardless

Exactly. They had to censor the title for mainstream press advertising. There are uncensored versions of the album on the Green Day Store website right now. The uncensored title is the official title as far as I understand. A more underground band that doesn't advertise in mainstream press wouldn't run into the same issue of being forced to censor per FCC regulations, etc.

Prima Donna and Dead Sound at the Golden Bull tonight? Have fun to all those who are attending! It’s tonight I think?

Does this count as a random Green Day thought? Kevin Preston and Bill Schneider and I’m not sure who else are both playing the show.

Either way have fun and sorry if this is the wrong thread!
