The Trilogy is massively underrated

I'm not sure where else it would've fit. Well, I am—they should've scrapped The Forgotten and made Brutal Love the outro instead—but in terms of just shuffling tracks without removing anything I think it has to be the beginning.

I guess so. It was kind of subversive for them to open the album with it, so I can appreciate that. But after the disappointment of Dos I don't think they were in any position to try and subvert our expectations :P

Okay, you have to be trolling us. You have to be. Please say you're trolling?

I'm not. It's a good song, but it's essentially a Sam Cooke cover, and I generally don't care for when bands "sample" existing songs (i.e. Oasis using Bang a Gong on their first album). I'd much rather hear something that is entirely the band's own.

Oh and for those who don't like the guitar tone, what tone could possibly make X-Kid sound any better? That song is absolutely perfect musically.

No. The trilogy sounds so flat. The lyrics are rambling nonsense and there was clearly no quality control. Even if it was 1 album, there are not enough good songs to fill an album.

Bang on

Does it matter if it's sampled though? If a song sounds good it sounds good. They've got plenty of original material for us to listen to, it's not like they rip off 100% of their music.

Oh, wait.

The guitar tone on X-Kid is fantastic, no question. That doesn't automatically mean it's a suitable tone for other songs on the Trilogy.

A generic, blanket decision is no way to go about creating 3 unique albums, with 37 distinct songs that should benefit from different tones, guitars, and amps

I hear no real similarities between Brutal Love and the Cooke song

To be honest, X Kid could have done with a tad more distortion on the chorus. As good as that song is, there's a real emptiness between the guitar and backing vocals, and that doesn't sound good on an epic song like that.

I do think the trilogy is under rated and I don't know why people hate it so much, but compared to their other work, it is not better than anything else. I like it because it sounds sort of different from what they've done before (in my opinion) but it definitely cannot beat American Idiot or anything. My two least favourite Green Day songs (the two songs I really can't get through) are from the trilogy. Apart of me feels like a lot of the lyrics were rushed as opposed to the lyrics for American Idiot which seem a lot more well planned and sound amazing. Let's get real, the lyrics for Little Boy Named Train (my second least favourite Green Day song) are so pathetic I can't help but laugh.

Sorry for rambling, but yeh, it doesn't deserve so much hate, but it's no where near their best work.

The vocal melody is definitely the same, I guess that's why Cooke was credited. Musically speaking, the chord progression is different, so the melody is the only similarity.

heeeeey i actually like the forgotten...

That idea just made me realize how X-Kid is like the poppy cousin of Basket Case

Yeah, the riff is just a combination of Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? and Basket Case. Usually that sort of thing irritates me but X-Kid is probably one of the best put together songs on the Trilogy so I'm fine with it.

The X-Kid riff is also just a rocked up version of Thinking Of You by Katy Perry. Which is probably why it's so good :P

I've found another production issue with the Trilogy. You can't hear it on the CD/MP3s, but I've got a FLAC rip of the vinyl and the delay on the snare is noticeable to the point of being really intrusive. It's probably really minor but now I've noticed it it's giving me a headache.

What? I don't see any resemblance.

I have the vinyls and they sound good to me...

The chord progressions are the same, and the chord voicings are quite unusual but exactly the same in both songs. The only real difference is the rhythm.

How did none of these albums get nominated for any Grammys? They all were worthy of album of the year!

Because the people who made the nominations weren't high :)

And the Trilogy has that fucking tambourine.

OH MY GOD THIS!!!!!

I didn't notice it at first, but once I did I just couldn't ignore it. It's so annoying, especially during Lazy Bones. I have no idea why no one's mentioned it before but I'm so relieved that it's not just me.

Ceadog never stops banging on about it to be fair

I actually love the tambourine in Lazy Bones, along with the clapping sound. Never really noticed it at first (so thanks Ceadog!) but it's raised my opinion of the song, there's something awesome about it having that happy clap along quality to it alongside the depressing lyrics.

The tambourine would be fine if it wasn't on every single song on the three albums.

The reason I think the trilogy didn't go down too well - and I think this true for Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning is because it didn't connect with people AS WELL as Dookie and AI did.

Dookie connected with teens around the world.

American Idiot connected with most around the world.

The trilogy was songs from a completely new environment. A lot more personal - which is a very good thing to have in records, but if you're not a die hard fan, and more "casual"

This is not what you'd expect from Green Day and therefore, because of the politics of American Idiot, the 3 records were discarded.

That's what I think anyway.

Great:

Nuclear Family -- Great opening track. Classic Green Day with a more mature vibe

Stay the Night -- Classic Green Day sound

Let Yourself Go -- Fast-paced and dirty. Could have been better with a stronger guitar sound

Oh Love -- A bit slow, but great vocals and guitar

See You Tonight -- Not really a song, but a cool intro

Stop When the Red Lights Flash -- Garagey Green Day sound

Lazy Bones -- Great song, but could benefit from better guitars and less tambourine

Wild One -- Great song, but could be cut down a bit

Stray Heart -- Very catchy

Wow Thats Loud -- A love the jam session ending. Catchy overall

Amy -- Like a garage lullaby

Brutal Love

Missing You

8th Ave Serenade

X-Kid

Dirty Rotten Bastards

Decent:

Carpie Diem

Kill the DJ

Rusty James

Fuck Time

Makeout Party

Baby Eyes

Nightlife

Lady Cobra

Walk Away

Amanda

99 Revolutions

Sex Drugs Violence

Bad

Fell for You -- Catchy chorus, but otherwise filler

Troublemaker -- Cool lyrics, but very repetitive and annoying "heys"

Loss of Control -- Filler

Angel Blue -- Filler

Sweet 16 -- Filler

Ashley -- Filler

Drama Queen

A Little Boy Named Train -- Just no

The Forgotten -- Bad
