The Trilogy is massively underrated

What were they trying to go back to?

Teenage sentiments and concerns, simple recycled three-chord progressions, a lack of production and instrumentation, etc. And I agree that complexity doesn't always imply growth—one of my favorite albums is The Who By Numbers, which was a huge step back from Quadrophenia—but nothing about the Trilogy speaks to increased maturity or musical skill or lyrical writing. It really is a midlife crisis in musical form.

Sudden realisation: The Trilogy has minimal production compared to American Idiot. This is what our heroes really sound like. Oh god.

The trilogy sounds like a return to classic Green Day to me (classic meaning pre-AI). Some of it sounds like post AI though (Dirty Rotten Bastards and Drama Queen), but even these songs I dig. I just really love the trilogy.

Teenage sentiments and concerns? Can't agree there, sounds like it's about an adult dealing with mid life crisis sentiments and concerns to me (not in the sense of the album being a mid life crisis as you mention :P, but the actual themes of the lyrics). I think the only similarity to their past albums, aside from the "Green Day sound" you get on all their albums to varying degrees, is the fact that it's simple music. But it isn't simple in the same way, it's in a retro rock and roll way not in a Dookie or Insomniac way. That's a new thing for them so I can't see it as going back.

Am I the only one who considers "classic Green Day" to be American Idiot?

HERETIC! Just kidding, I agree. :P

Honestly, I kinda view pre-Warning Green Day and Warning-21CB Green Day as two completely different bands a lot of the time for convenience's sake.

Absolutely not. It's weird, a lot of people seem to be stuck in the mindset of Dookie being 'classic' because it was when American Idiot came out, but American Idiot is 10 damn years ago now, so I don't see the problem. It's the best they're ever likely to sound, and personally when I think 'typical Green Day' these days I think of songs in the vein of BOBD rather than Basket Case.

Yeah, people always seem to label Dookie as classic Green Day, but classic usually implies an artist at their peak. AI is without a doubt GD's peak.

Yeah, Dookie contains way too much filler to be their definitive album.

I dunno, I think because of the fact there was a big change with American Idiot then people are more just splitting it between their new sound and old sound when they say "classic" in Green Day's case.

Too much filler on Dookie?? And none on AI? Seriously?

Seriously. Name me one filler song on AI.

There's no filler on American Idiot or Dookie. Well, apart from All By Myself on Dookie, but who listens to that anyway?

Eh, I'd say "Sassafras Roots" is right on the edge.

Not in the slightest.

That explains a lot. I probably wouldn't be so enthusiastic for it if not for the bassline, but it's just like sex in my ears.

Are We the Waiting, half of Homecoming, WMUWSE, Whatername

Also nothing special about St Jimmy either.

1. Are We the Waiting is crucial in showing Jesus' utter disillusionment and final transition to St. Jimmy, and provides some breathing space between BOBD and St. Jimmy, avoiding what would otherwise be an extremely abupt switch.

2. Apart from Rock and Roll Girlfriend (which actually provides some needed levity), NO. It's the entire climax of the fucking album.

3. Are you shitting me? It's one of their biggest hits and most personal songs.

4. One of their most heartbreaking and beautiful songs, and one that provides much-needed resolution to the album.

5. Except it's the lynchpin that the rest of the plot hangs on, and is crucial in that it's a hard and fast song in the midst of multiple slow ones.

Are We The Waiting I can understand, as much as I love it, it's not a complete song. It's amazing for the live spectacle though. Homecoming, I can understand because it's a bit all over the place and not for everyone, although I love it. As for the others, that's just laughable, I'm sorry. You can hate them as much as you want but that doesn't make them filler. They fit the vibe of the album perfectly and they're fantastically crafted songs on every level.

To add to the discussion, I can take or leave St Jimmy but there is no denying that every single song is a vital part of the progression of the whole album. It all makes sense in its entirety.
