WhiteTim Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 My CD just arrived. One day prior to German release date. So I should be happy... . But I'm absolutely dissappointed about that thin and cheap cardboard cd cover. No booklet or nice artwork inside. And all that for Euro 18.99 from amazon Germany. That's way overpriced. http://de.tinypic.com/r/bgzslw/5 Thank you Warner that you did not send me a cardboard cd as well! No booklet or a lot of artwork was pretty much standards of the 1950's vinyls came with a front cover and all the info on the back cover and that's it...
robinlovesbillie Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Please don't ask for links to illegal downloads. There ya go, mods...handled that one for you all :-) EDIT: You can legally stream it here though http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=s9_acss_bw_hsb_MusicNov19_s2?docId=1001713941&ie=UTF8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=078S59FR96GSJDAXMFQS&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1666983402&pf_rd_i=5174&wmgref=&tag=smarturl-20 I love the re-arranged order of the tracks. Billie definitely followed his more recent standard way of arranging an album. Start strong and up-beat, and make the closer very reflective and beautiful in it's simplicity. I LOVE Put my Little Shoes Away as the final track. It just lets the vocals completely take over with very little instrumental assistance. Perfect choice to close out the album and leave you feeling like you just got a complete listening experience. Why I do declare "Rhett" -- you are such a gentleman!!! Thanks dude!
laurie_black Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Would it be too much to ask if someone could rip this again? The video's not available in my country ...
cav9mm Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 So the album is butchered here http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/11/album-review-billie-joe-norah-foreverly/
Jax Teller Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Just have to say that I really can't stop listening to this. When I really focus on the lyrics and let myself get lost in them it all just hits me so hard. Also went out of my way to listen to the entire "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us" album last night on YouTube. Their arrangements were definitely simpler and lighter. I LOVE what Billie and Norah did with those songs. They gave a lot more meaning and depth to the material. Don't get me wrong, the Everly Brothers album was great, but Foreverly transforms those songs into something much more. I agree with everything you said.
Bastard of 1967 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 So the album is butchered here http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/11/album-review-billie-joe-norah-foreverly I suspect (and hope) that this one's a one-off. The disdain/bias the reviewer has against both artists and BJ in particular is pretty apparent throughout the review. Billie's vocal range started to grow significantly in the Breakdown/Stop Drop & Roll era, and then exploded during his stint on Broadway. The fact that he can hold his own with someone with pipes like Norah is enough of an accomplishment in and of itself, and it really makes me wonder what the hell this reviewer was looking for (other than another excuse to trash Green Day's frontman).
Guest Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 There was a review for this in an Irish magazine over the weekend, I'll see if I can get scans/photos of it up at some stage. The reviewer isn't overly fond of either Billie Joe or Norah, but concedes that the album isn't a complete disaster. Plenty of dodgy factual errors though. Apparently Green Day haven't been in public since iHeart... So the album is butchered here http://consequenceofsound.net/2013/11/album-review-billie-joe-norah-foreverly/ Gotta agree with a lot of this.
Bastard of 1967 Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Gotta agree with a lot of this. Always gotta be someone who likes, and someone who doesn't. I won't say anyone's entitled to their opinion about something this subjective, even if I think they're wrong. But seriously - I think this will in the end get a mixed and mostly positive reception. If you like or even simply appreciate the genre to begin with, I expect it'll be well received. If late 50's era doesn't do it for you (and that rules out a lot of three-chord-punk old-school Green Day fans right there) it's gonna land with a "huh, wha?" thud. In saying that, I don't mean to imply that hard-core punk or even classic rock fans who enjoy Green Day as Green Day either can't or won't find something to enjoy in the country-folk genre that Foreverly is shooting at -- but I will say that ol' BJ isn't likely to find much low-hanging fruit with his "home turf" fans, if you know what I mean. -- and that's where I think that CoS review fits in. Personally, 'til I heard exactly what they did here I wasn't planning to touch the stuff -- and now I want to go out and give the Everly Bros. original a listen just to hear what of it Billie and Norah kept and how they departed from it. Just the fact that they've got the music world buzzing again about a genre that died 60 years ago is pretty damn awesome. ....and maybe one day BJ will do it again, but with guitar-driven classic rock'n'roll!
Heather. Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Their voices sound incredible together, but I was taken aback listening to Billie singing Barbara Allan on his own. It made me realize how much Norah carries the harmonies to make Billie sound even better. IDK, I only listened once because I'm trying to wait till my copy arrives. From streaming the album once, I thought their duets sounded perfect, and Norah's one solo song sounded so smooth, but Billie's sounded a bit flat without her in the background. Anyone agree?
UNICORN VOMIT Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I was interested to read the latest interview saying the first of the recordings were in April.
Liam Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Just got back from spending 2 hours to get the store and back to get the album. I'm listen to it now and I'm only at the third track but so far it sounds incredible. Their voices go so well together and the instrumentation is incredible. I'm actually glad Billie didn't get Tre and Mike to do drums and bass, it's nice to see him splitting off and doing his own thing.
Guest Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Fairly dodgy review from the Irish Independent that I mentioned earlier. I have it in hard copy and took pics and all before checking if it was online, which of course it was. http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/rock-did-you-think-youd-see-the-day-29758394.html He's not too kind towards either of them, but at least he doesn't totally write Foreverly off. His facts are a bit dodgy though. Apparently Green Day disappeared off the face off the earth between iHeart and now... If anyone wants the hard pics let me know.
November's Storms Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I'm reluctant to believe anything that comes from the Irish Independent when it comes to topics like politics or current events, and that's where they are supposed to be best. Not renowned for being "cool" and I can see why. It's full of stereotypes of both musicians and seems to have been written by someone who doesn't know either of them too well and just had to do a bit of last minute research. I don't love the album but I do like it. I'm hoping by picking up a physical copy and playing it to death it will grow on me.

I'd say Norah brings out the best in Billie's vocals. She was the perfect person for him to do this with. As for Barbara Allen - Billie going with his "thin and hollow" vocals is a deliberate choice, because we know from many other things he's done in the past couple of years that he can easily go full and rich with it when he wants to. He's a lonesome cowboy sitting on a stoop or in some saloon somewhere, strumming out a sad and touching story about two star-crossed lovers who only and finally connect with each other after their death. The vocal style he uses fits well in terms of setting the mood and enhancing the song, at least that's my own over-entitled opinion anyway. But regardless, this would seem to be a purposeful decision in terms of how they wanted to orchestrate this song...you either like it or you don't, and all's well.

I agree with your assesment mostly due to the fact that he sings Barbara Allen very differently from all the other songs on the album. He sings it a lot more "folksy." In regards to that Consequece of Sound reveiw...that writer doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about. Talking about how Billie shows off his "limited range" and how Norah carries everything. Pretty sure that both of them cover the same amount of territory in terms of the distance between their lowest note on the album and their highest. The songs in general are not meant to "show off" one's ability to cover 4 octaves. The songs are meant to show off the deep lyrics and simple, yet wildly effective harmonies. I also don't know how he can make the "limited range" comment given the fact that Billie's light, higher range head voice is absolutely stunning on this album.

Ryan Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Alright...Put My Little Shoes Away is fucking incredible. Holy fuck is it good
AngelBlue_ Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I really love Barbara Allen..It's my favourite...I love Billie's voice...It's so "clean"...and yes it reminds me of "The Ballad of Wilheim Fink" a bit
Florence Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I'm annoyed that I didn't get the album today now I have to wait until tomorrow GAH I already listened to the stream though. Barbara Allen is frigging good! Put My Little Shoes Away made me cry it's so beautiful and sad
AngelBlue_ Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Norah Jones and Billie Joe Armstrong quietly got together to record “Foreverly,” a reinterpretation of the Everly Brothers’ 1958 album “Songs Our Daddy Taught Us.” - New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/24/arts/music/norah-jones-and-billie-joe-armstrong-sing-everly-brothers.html

Whatsinaname Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 “Perfect for the holiday season,” Mr. Armstrong said. I know I'll be buying a few copies for Christmas gifts!
Mar Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Rockin' Alone (In An Old Rockin' Chair) is the one that stands out to me right now. The simple piano is beautiful and they're making the already sad lyrics really gut me (in the best way possible).
