peppermint butler Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Agree 100%. The cursing doesn't bother me, and in some places it's effective, but the thing with the F-bomb is the more you use it, the less power it has. If you use it sparingly, it's way more powerful. Just look at famous movie quotes. That's why American Idiot is so powerful, and why the trilogy you just become numb to the cursing and it doesn't really make you think about the power behind it. It starts to lose meaning, and the whole point of those words is to help you get your point across. I also think Billie used "fuckin" as a placeholder for what could have been a more interesting, descriptive adjective for a lot of lyrics on the trilogy. Or because he needed two extra syllables in a line and it was just easier to say "fuckin." Then again, I definitely would believe that he's just writing from his heart/mind, and there's a lot of "fucking this, fucking that" going through his head, but I do think that as a songwriter and poet it's his job to think a little deeper than that. But we know these albums were "shooting from the hip" and "fun," and maybe less self-edited and less self-conscious. Maybe most of Billie's first-draft songs have "fuckin _______" every other word, and in the past he would go back and actually rethink those lyrics and put in something more poetic, but on the trilogy they had a "fuck it" attitude with every song, and so we wound up with, IMO, weaker lyrics. makes sence
Spike Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I agree with what's been said about it possibly coming out of the fact the trilogy was more spontaneous. If you look at, say, American Idiot, EVERYTHING is crafted. The song structures, how everything locks together, any solos are clearly pre-written and well thought out and, crucially, the lyrics are very well crafted and must have had a lot of rewrites. With the trilogy it does just sound like they're jamming a lot of the time, which is why the song structures tend to be more samey, Billie rips out solos that are clearly improvised, and the lyrics seem to just be Billie going with the flow. So it makes sense and works well in context, it's just a totally different vibe since most of their material previously has been full of intent and tightly edited.
St. Christian Of Suburbia Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 God, those are terrible songs XD I can't say this comment has any place in this thread.
Iva Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 He recorded it while he was on the toilet. Baby, baby, it's poop-time!
Guest Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I can't say this comment has any place in this thread. Nor does your one, or this one
ZSebs Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 W-wait so you mean the lines "Shut your mouth 'cause you're talking too much and I don't give a fuck anyway" and "Shoot the fucking DJ" don't make Billie seem so edgy and punx rawkz? /s Don't forget, "always fuck fucking with my head now"
Asa. Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Don't forget, "always fuck fucking with my head now" I love those lyrics so much. Two different forms of the word "Fuck" in a row.
Spike Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Don't forget, "always fuck fucking with my head now" I actually seriously love that. The anger, however glossy in terms of sound, is fantastic.
localinsomniac Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Do you mean forced? Came here to say this. Sometimes, it just seems like he needed a word to fill the space, so why not drop another 'fuck' on us? Not the man's best lyrical work.
ouimetnick Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Baby, baby, it's poop-time! You know I really wanna make you mine!
beejeezee Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 He just puts a lot of emphasis on the word fuck because fuck is a beautiful word and I very much like hearing Billie say fuck.
Hermione Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 He just puts a lot of emphasis on the word fuck because fuck is a beautiful word and I very much like hearing Billie say fuck. I concur. I remember watching them play American Idiot on a TV show when I first got into them and being entertained by how he sang the "fuck" with as much emphasis as he could. He enjoys his swearing.

Ann Richmond Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Cause Mike didn't pick the sings for Dos and same with Tre for Tre... well I'm sure they helped with picking them thou
Spike Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 well I'm sure they helped with picking them thou They all wrote all the songs together, and all contributed in picking which of the dozens of songs they'd written were actually going to be used. There's a whole chunk of Cuatro dedicated to showing them choosing the running order - they narrowed the songs down to three categories and chose the best set of songs and running order for each. The album that any particular song ended up on has nothing to do with who wrote it, because they all did everything together.

Pied Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 If someone could count how many times Billie cursed in Let Yourself Go and Kill The DJ that'd make my life.
Spike Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 If someone could count how many times Billie cursed in Let Yourself Go and Kill The DJ that'd make my life. Let Yourself Go: 10 Kill The DJ: 17
Pied Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Let Yourself Go: 10 Kill The DJ: 17 Shit, a lot less than I anticipated. Ho hum.
Spike Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Shit, a lot less than I anticipated. Ho hum. They're only the album versions though. It gets interesting live
Shredder2 Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 It didn't sound strained when I was listening to "Fuck Time."
