I agree, would punk have been so successful in the first place if not for the popularity of the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash and so on? And there's no denying they were punk.

But unfortunately that was the view of a lot of Gilman fanatics at the time Green Day made it. A very blinkered view in my opinion, and nothing to do with maintaining punk purity. It's elitist and, let's be honest, by today's standards it can be considered kinda hipster.

He only listens to 39/Smooth and Kerplunk and says that he doesnt like American Idiot because it doesnt have any "emotion". I told him he obviously must not have heard the same album that I did.

I also went on to tell him that even if he doesn't like the album, he can't deny the fact that it is one of the most emotional, heartfelt peices of music ever created.

Surely whether there's emotion on a record or not isn't a matter of opinion, though? It's just a fact. The opinion is whether the person in question likes it or not, and I don't see their right to that opinion being questioned.

It's up for debate, surely, but there's no question that your perception of the emotion contained in any work of art is entirely subjective. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, for example, I find extremely boring and soulless. For some reason other people consider it better and more powerful than the original - even Trent Reznor has stated he feels this way and stated that it's "no longer his song".
