UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Do you think peoples opinions would be different if the guys had set out with the concept from the start rather than coming up with the idea whilst in the studio
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Do you think peoples opinions would be different if the guys had set out with the concept from the start rather than coming up with the idea whilst in the studio maybe, but i dont think so...
Z J Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Green Day should randomly play the song 21st Century Breakdown after 99 Revolutions then play Know Your Enemy. That would be awesome. Just saying. Sex, Drugs & Violence is a great song. Some damn good lyrics. I'll admit that the guitar is pretty weak sounding. I hated Nightlife at first but I actually really like it now. It's kind of poetic. I don't really like Dirty Rotten Bastards. The middle until he repeats the beginning again is the only good part. The chorus lyrics are pretty weak. Sex, drugs & violenceEnglish, math & science,Safety in numbersGive me, give me danger also: All my life I've been running wild like a runaway Also he ends two lines with the same phrase: All my life trouble follows me like a mystery, girl I've been chasing down a memory like a mystery, girl Not their best effort lyrically and it's not really melodic enough to make up for it. DRB is kind of epic for the sake of being epic and it would be better if the lyrics made more sense. But still seems to be a fan favorite from the trilogy
Z J Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I really like the trilogy, honestly. It's not Green Day's best work obviously, but the songs are really fun and a lot of them are pretty meaningful as well. Some songs are stronger than others (as with any album by any artist) but overall I think the lyrical work is pretty great. And while it's being discussed, I never associated that line from Drama Queen with periods. I always thought it meant that she's grown up enough to take the blame from her mistakes and deal with the consequences. I always just assumed the drama queen was some moody teenage girl so that line talking about periods would fit in my interpretation. That's what a lot of reviews thought it was about (not that they're always right). And I agree that the trilogy is better than most bands work and does have some very good fun songs. But it just doesn't stand up to other GD work for me besides 39/smooth. Mainly because despite the silliness of the songs, it just seems like the band doesn't even like them or relate to them. They completely ignore over half the trilogy on the Trilogy tour but are playing Dookie all the way through a year b4 it's anniversary. Idk why that it is but it feels like they only are pushing a few songs from the trilogy and it makes me wonder if they truly believe it was their best work. Back in the Dookie era there were songs that were silly sometimes but the songs weren't so outrageous because they were 20 years old. Now they are 40 and some of the songs are just a tad over the top and not as funny as the dookie era ones. I enjoy GD's work the most when it's put in context and it's believable. Basket Case and Longview were written at times when you would expect BJA to be feeling the emotions described in the songs. Same goes for American Idiot. You know that BJA actually feels that way about the state of America. But then you hear Makeout Party and Nightlife and there is no way in hell that I'm buying that Billie's life is like it is depicted in Dos when he's 40 and married. Songs like Lazy Bones, Rusty James, X-Kid, and Brutal Love strike me as so much more honest and self reflective

Basically anyone who grows up famous.
Z J Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Yeah but Billie Joe himself said it was about celebrities, specifically celebrity kids/teenagers/whatever. Basically anyone who grows up famous Doesn't mean it isn't referring to periods, and where did he say that
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Doesn't mean it isn't referring to periods, and where did he say that You crack me up - I think you would make a great criminal defence attorney - you would fight for your client to the bitter end.
walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 You crack me up - I think you would make a great criminal defence attorney - you would fight for your client to the bitter end. why are we even arguing about drama queen's meaning, doesnt green day authority write the meanings down on the lyric pages?
Z J Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 You crack me up - I think you would make a great criminal defence attorney - you would fight for your client to the bitter end. don't know if you mean it in a positive way or negative but it's not the first time i've heard this.
green day is Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Doesn't mean it isn't referring to periods, and where did he say that I mean the whole song is about celebs, ya dingus. The bleeding line is still about periods but it's symbolism for maturity.
Otis Big Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 The chorus lyrics are pretty weak. Spike Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Sex, Drugs and Violence is a pretty good lyric when you really look into it. The trilogy would be far better if it was just one album: 1. Nuclear Family 2. Stay The Night 3. Carpe Diem 4. Let Yourself Go 5. Kill The DJ 6. Amy 7. Brutal Love 8. Missing You 9. X-Kid 10. Sex, Drugs & Violence 11. Dirty Rotten Bastards 12. 99 Revolutions
Z J Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I mean the whole song is about celebs, ya dingus. The bleeding line is still about periods but it's symbolism for maturity. I never implied it wasn't I only asked where you heard this, and the way I've interpreted the lyrics, the song seems to be about a teenage girl and her growing up and talks about her period. Just because he is talking about someone maturing does not mean it's a mature song. And I also don't buy in to how BJA relates to it. So wherever you got your info from may be a useful source for me to better understand that hm? Also thanks for more ad hominems He's comparing two different paths in life and obviously choosing the more dangerous one. doesn't make the chorus lines any less lame
mylilPWNy Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 To be honest, I was kinda disappointed with the trilogy cause I was expecting a more ambitious set of songs, it kept being compared to The Clash's Sandinista, which it was nothing like at all. ¡Uno! Was very very poppy, it was basically like modern age glam rock. ¡Dos! was just like a shittier version of Foxboro Hot Tubs, if the Foxboro Hot Tubs just had better recording equipment. And finally, I was kinda hoping ¡Tré! would be more of a mixed bag of random genres or at least more on the epic scale, cause that was how Billie described it, but what we got were mostly just a bunch of songs that could have just been right off of ¡Uno!. However, the trilogy does hold some of the best songs Green Day have ever written in their career.
green day is Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 And I also don't buy in to how BJA relates to it. So wherever you got your info from may be a useful source for me to better understand that hm? Uhm... because he wrote it? There's this article from before 21CBD where he goes through each song track by track and describes their meanings, and if you didn't already know Drama Queen was originally there in place of Murder City. He said it was about people growing up famous surrounded by drama and problems.
Insomniac85 Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 These albums are not for me. I like a few tracks off each album. but alot of the tracks on these records just make me cringe.

I like a few tracks off each album. but alot of the tracks on these records just make me cringe. the only ones that are really making me cringe are kill the dj, lady cobra, makeout party, wild one, nightlife, and drama queen
X-Kid-X Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I love them as much as I love every other album by Green Day.. so I voted Great Albums. I think there are too many people who say they hate the albums cuz they don't like Kill the DJ, Oh Love or Nightlife -_- That's just sad.
Guest Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Poor lyrics Nightlife Lazy song structure Nightlife Weak guitar tone Nightlife Billie harmonising with himself instead of Mike Nightlife Excessive copying of riffs, even by Green Day's standards Nightlife So much fucking tambourine And oh yeah, Nightlife
