walking_c0ntradicti0n Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 DOS IS SUCH A GOOD ALBUM It seems like nobody appreciates it like I do. The songs are so catchy and sound good. Great lyrics on tracks like Lazy Bones, Wild One, Stray Heart and even Nightlife. Nightlife is a pretty poetic song. "Red velvet walls line these sugar coated halls" And just that deeper sound that both UNO and TRE lack. DOS IS SUCH A GOOD ALBUM It seems like nobody appreciates it like I do. Kayfabe Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Below average for Green Day. Shoulda trimmed the fat. You and me both. Some people have to (uh Green Day) write stuff that has no meaning so it can somewhat get through the thick skulls of our generation. There's actually a place for nonsensical lyrics, if they showcase something interesting about the words themselves. Wordplay is one of my favourite things about music but it's seen in hip-hop more than Rock because rap is closer to poetry in that vein; the sound of the words matter almost as much as the words themselves do.
Idlewild. Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Oh, another line that's really bad is "Count your blessings going zero to five, steal a kiss then I took a dive." While we're on the topic of bad lines.... Angel Blue. All of it.

Yeah, there is place for nonsensical lyrics, just listen to some of Nirvana's songs or Beck's entire catalog, but people expect more from Green Day. While we're on the topic of bad lines.... I'm saying nonsensical lyrics can be clever in their own right, though, if the word play is strong. Green Day's were more nonsensical because they needed a word that rhymed with X.
frenchfryjordan Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I don't know, I loved all three of them. Tre is actually tied with AI as my favorite Green Day album.
Z J Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 The lyrics are subpar and kind of immature for the most part, not saying they have to be super serious but 40 year olds singing about girls' periods and makeout parties is a little weird. Green Day is so good because their songs come of as honest and are relatable. The trilogy doesn't really connect on any emotional level. The songs that really feel Genuine to me: Brutal Love, Amy, X-Kid, Rusty James, and Lazy Bones are some of the best songs on the trilogy because they seem to actually be written by a 40 year old. They're honest. In addition to that, the production on this album wasn't great, there's some kind of filter on BJA's voice and they don't do many harmonies like they do live (which are where the songs thrive) The guitar riffs are pretty average as well, although the solos aren't half bad. In summary only really a handful of trilogy songs are worthy of Green Day's esteemed catalog. Nuclear Family, DRB, Amy, Brutal Love, Sweet 16, and Stay the Night are some of the best. But Makeout Party, ALBNT, SD&V, Baby Eyes, Angel Blue, Nightlife, and Loss of Control (among others) are just not very good songs. EDIT: All above statements are opinions and I'd be willing to discuss them with anyone who disagrees.
green day is Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 girls' periods The line in Drama Queen is about growing up. Menstruation is a sign of maturity all over the world. It would be immature to consider every mention of it, especially one as innocuous as "she's old enough to bleed now," inappropriate. Ya dingus.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 The line in Drama Queen is about growing up. Menstruation is a sign of maturity all over the world. It would be immature to consider every mention of it, especially one as innocuous as "she's old enough to bleed now," inappropriate. Ya dingus. At first I thought that and hated the song but I think the deeper meaning is that she is older enough to take the blame for her actions and stand on her own two feet.
Jollyroger118 Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I really do like the trilogies sound even though it's not as "heavy" as their other stuff but the lyrics are what gets to me the most. Their good enough that I don't dislike the songs but Billie's always been a really sharp song writer and the trilogy songs just don't compare. Either way though I'm happy with the trilogy, I just wish they played the songs live more. In my opinion their a 100% better live

UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Anyways all I know is that I really enjoy the trilogy and listen to it as much as the other albums. I know here in Australia the stations were excited as shit that they were putting out these albums and were constantly commenting about them and then rehab happened & bang no airtime at all - it was like they didn't even exist. Who knows what would have happened here if everything had gone the guys way. I personally think the trilogy would have done well here also considering that the band had only said just before rehab that they were coming here at the beginning the year but that is all hearsay now
green day is Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 At first I thought that and hated the song but I think the deeper meaning is that she is older enough to take the blame for her actions and stand on her own two feet. That's part of maturity.
green day is Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 yes maturity not periods Periods represent maturity everywhere.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I can't believe I am discussing this but a girl is far from mature when she gets her first period - its a part of growing up.
green day is Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 its a part of growing up. And what do we call growing up?
peppermint butler Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Another amazing day on my thread. Loving the reactions. BTW this is not a trilogy hate thread. Even though I love the trilogy , ill start a hate thread by request. Again I LOVE THE TRiLOGY

It would be immature to consider every mention of it, especially one as innocuous as "she's old enough to bleed now," inappropriate. Ya dingus. I don't necessarily consider it to be inappropriate so much as I do think it's weird. That's nice, it's a sign of maturity FOR A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL. It is not a sign of maturity to sing about it if you are 40. Singing about a girl maturing through her period and puberty is in no way a mature song for a 40 year old. You're taking it literally I think. I'm talking about mature topics, not literal songs about a maturing teenage girl (Which he has no way to relate to, making the song even more odd). but thanks for the ad hominem
Otis Big Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Green Day should randomly play the song 21st Century Breakdown after 99 Revolutions then play Know Your Enemy. That would be awesome. Just saying. The lyrics are subpar and kind of immature for the most part, not saying they have to be super serious but 40 year olds singing about girls' periods and makeout parties is a little weird. I'll admit that the guitar is pretty weak sounding. I hated Nightlife at first but I actually really like it now. It's kind of poetic. I don't really like Dirty Rotten Bastards. The middle until he repeats the beginning again is the only good part.
GaxnorianLiberator Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Hold on, I've gotta look at the track listings of Uno! and Tre! to say which ones are actually good. Dos! is probably my favorite of the trilogy. I listened to it as much as I could in November while I was Coming up with scenes for NaNoWriMo. Not while I was writing though left that to MCR and some Pulp. Uno!: Angel Blue, Sweet 16, Rusty James. Tre!(Some may have some good but not enough to be included on this list.): X-Kid, Sex, Drugs, Violence, Dirty Rotten Bastards, 99 Revolutions. EDIT: I don't care about any of your opinions. Just keep them to yourself unless you want to be ignored.
fromdecimateddreams Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I really like the trilogy, honestly. It's not Green Day's best work obviously, but the songs are really fun and a lot of them are pretty meaningful as well. Some songs are stronger than others (as with any album by any artist) but overall I think the lyrical work is pretty great. And while it's being discussed, I never associated that line from Drama Queen with periods. I always thought it meant that she's grown up enough to take the blame from her mistakes and deal with the consequences.
