green day is Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I honestly think its fictional, too. It's not, Billie talked about it in an interview. What the hell.
Fuzz Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 After talking with the team I've decided to re-open this topic. Going forward we would rather people create topics about songs, rather than lump them all together in a Q&A or SoTW thread. Like any other song, this is up for interpretation. No one knows the reason Billie felt like writing it or releasing it on the trilogy - but we're not going to close or remove a topic when it's related to the subject of a published song. If you disagree with this decision, or any going forward about the merit of a topic's "worthiness", then use the Report button and let the mod team know and we can discuss it further.
Todd Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I was just thinking about Stay the Night, Billie mentioned he recently had the chance to reconnect with Amanda, and the lines "I gotta know if you're the one that got away/even though it was never meant to be" fit Amanda, the one who got away, but it was never meant to be because Billie knows his love for Adrienne is true. "I've got an impulse so repulsive that it burns/I wanna break your heart until it makes your stomach churn" Sounds like Billie has an impulse to do something with Amanda and he can't help but think about it, but it's absolutely repulsive and it burns to think he could betray Adie like that. I was just thinking this a few hours ago, glad to see a similar thought so I can share mine

Clean Cut Asshole Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "Stray Heart" is about Billie cheating on Adrienne with Mike, Tré and/or Jason.
jumpsalty Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "Stray Heart" is about Billie cheating on Adrienne with Mike, Tré and/or Jason. ... Riiiight
Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 First thought: just putting this out there but Billie is a millionaire 41 year old rockstar who happens to be pretty goodlooking (I think we can agree haha)...he has toured the world numerous times etc etc but even before that he was a twenty-something touring the world and before that a regular living breathing teen. I think it's safe to assume he has experienced more relationships and more lustfull thoughts than simply Amanda or Adrienne...just saying. Not all songs are about one or the other or both. Second thought: Tre said in one interview (it's in one of the scans on GDA) that "Billie didn't filter himself at all on this record". In that sense maybe he really did just tell us a true story in Stray Heart (why not he said in numerous interviews from Insomniac era to 21st C Breakdown that he writes from his own experience even with his characters). Honestly we don't know his personal life and we can't assume to. Remember many were shocked to discover he was using perscription drugs and had an alcohol problem...my point? For some silly reason we look at the people we love in bsnds smiling or whatever in pictures & believe what we see on the surface...we don't know their personal lives really. Anyway Stray Heart is a weird one because it seems to suggest the narrator has lost his way and given his heart to another thus tearing apart the heart of his lover. But as it progresses it becomes more confusing with "I'm not alone, oh and now I'm where I belong, we're not alone, oh I'll hold your heart and never let go" thus suggesting they have reunited only then to say "Every thing I want, I want from you, but I just can't have you, every thing I need, I need from you, but I just can't have you". These lines make me think that perhaps the couple are still living together but the narrator has not been forgiven despite his best efforts/need to be with this person. The "I just can't have you" sounds like frustrated recognition (he almost sounds like he is singing it through gritted teeth) that this screw up was too great to fix and he will have to "hold your heart and never let go" despite not actually 'having' the girl so to speak. In terms of if this is about Billie or not who can really say but in a practical sense he easily could have cheated so there is no point in people getting defensive over the possibility...in a straightforward sense the song is great and makes me think of someone who cheats on their wife but they stay together (maybe for the sake of kids or whatever) but the love (from the girl) has dissipated yet the guy still needs and longs for her regretting his mistakes but he just can't have her. Sad stuff. Set to killer music haha.
Fuzz Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 So, I can create any other song like DRB? If you have something new or different to add and start a conversation over - the sure.

Todd Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 So, I can create any other song like DRB? No, not unless there is something unique to discuss about it
green day is Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 No, not unless there is something unique to discuss about it Fifteen minutes after Andres already said that. Tman you are the worst pseudo-mod ever.
Sarcasm Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Tman you are the worst pseudo-mod ever.please don't start the bitching. If you don't like it don't reply with useless smack like that.

Fish Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 this is why I don't read a lot of song meanings, I think it's much more entertaining to make up your own meaning based on what comes into your mind as you're listening. Bingo. Biggest example for me was Restless Heart Syndrome. I probably listened to that song 200 times before I saw the interview on YouTube of them explaining that song's meaning. I almost got mad because their explanation was so far away from my interpretation. With Stray Heart, my original thought of the song reminded me of a situation with a girl I like(d) a lot. "Everything that I want, I want from you, but I just can't have you" to me summed up the idea of, well, this person can give you everything you want, now it's just a matter of getting with them. The concept of cheating never came to me in this song until I saw the music video.
Todd Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Fifteen minutes after Andres already said that. Tman you are the worst pseudo-mod ever. Wow, I'm sorry. I really should've checked the second page first, and then gone back to the first page. Jesus Christ, why are you making a big deal?

Jesus Christ, why are you making a big deal? Why are you being so sensitive? It was a fucking joke, for God's sake. Again - Getting tired of this fucking shit.
Sanity Loan Posted August 2, 2013 Author Posted August 2, 2013 All this stupid fighting was why I had the thread closed and deleted in the first place. My point was to get people's ideas on the origin and meaning of the song. As with many of Billie's songs, there are many possible interpretations.
Heather. Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 The song confused me at first because I thought certainly he had to be addressing different people---"We'll never part" vs. "I just can't have you" seemed very contradictory to me. I think, if you want to think this is a true story, it makes the most sense in the context of what someone mentioned on page 1, that is an OLD story from when he was on-off with Adrienne in the early 90s and he obviously dated Amanda/other girls during that time while he was maybe kinda in a relationship of sorts with Adrienne. That's the only context in which "I just can't have you" and "we'll never part" seem to make sense together in a song. I think st_trillie's interpretation is really interesting but a little too much of a stretch in terms of meaning for me to agree with. That being said, I go back and forth between believing this is literal or not. While I think it's obviously a logistical possibility (or probability) that Billie has cheated somewhere along the line, the ease and fun with which he sings this song would seem pretty bizarre considering how it IS a serious topic and although he does have a sense of humor in his songs, it's usually bitter humor and not necessarily upbeat humor. This song doesn't really have humor in it, but the music is so fun that it totally undermines the severity of the words. For that reason, I think it's fiction/fantasy. I mean, I don't have trouble believing Lady Cobra/Fuck Time/Nightlife are "fantasy" songs, so why should this be any different? On the other hand, the words are classic honest Billie--direct, truthful, to the point. They're not metaphorical enough to be "fake." Also, the fact that Stray Heart was almost on "Tre" gives it a different vibe, because that's supposed to be the "redemption" album or the "hangover" album. For whatever hundreds of reasons probably unrelated to the song's meaning, it wound up on Dos where it can be safely nestled among the "less serious" songs, ya know? It's on the party fantasy sex album, it's not on the "honestly what did I do with my life album." That doesn't necessarily tell us anything truthful about the song, but it's definitely interesting. Ah, who the hell really knows? I'd love it if he'd talk about these songs more.
StuckWithInsomnia Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 It might be about someone Billie knows. In an interview in 1996 I think he said he sometimes writes about other people, but in first person. Maybe its one of those songs.
Bastard of 1969 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "Stray Heart" is about Billie cheating on Adrienne with Mike, Tré and/or Jason. Yea, sure. Meaning is: One time, Billie and Tre had really bad sex. And Adrienne said to Billlie; Billie, no more sex with Tre. Hold your penis and never let it go. And that's how stray heart was written. ARE YOU SERIOUS?
musso_kn Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 "Stray Heart" is about Billie cheating on Adrienne with Mike, Tré and/or Jason. ... Riiiight Well, it's not out of the realms of possibility, is it?
