Green Day in Rolling Stone Best Live Acts Today

The only thing I agree with is the top spot, Springsteen's live shows are more than a concert, it's an experience, he plays song's randomly, which is hard for any band to do because most of the time they just stick with the setlist. But the fact that Green Day is #48 on this is a joke, I saw them at Lolla 2010, and they put on the best show live show i've ever (tied with The Foo Fighters, who I saw the next year), they put in 110% during each show, even during the iHeart shindig, Green Day tried to put on a good show, even though it was pretty much going to messed up from the get-go because of everything that was happening, i've always enjoyed and loved watching Billie Joe engage with the crowd, because you can tell that while he might be a millionare rocker, he's still a Punk at heart, and he still loves connecting with his fan's, whether it's 500 people or 50,000, he connects so well, and the band definentely delievers better than any band i've seen so far! But it really doesn't matter because to me, they're still in the Top 10 as far as i'm concerned.

There are a lot more than 50 bands in the world. If they were "giving them the shaft" they'd just not include them! The Flaming Lips aren't even included at all!

The list is made up of "legacy" artists and current artists, and Green Day are definitely of the half that are playing live shows off the back of their legacy. And the legacy artists that are way higher up the list, such as Springsteen or the Stones, are there because they're not just rattling off the same set, in Springsteen's case he plays a completely different set every single night. Neil Young and Pearl Jam play whatever the fuck they want. Tom Petty and Paul McCartney pull out the deep cuts from their (much bigger) discographies. Green Day are still playing the safe greatest hits set that this article criticises Tom Petty for sticking to in tours gone by.

Care to explain The Black Keys? Arcade Fire? Mumford & Sons? My Morning Jacket? Those are all young bands, with a combined career that couldn't even rival Green Day's worst days. I'm fine with the "legacy artists" being up top, but not fine with Green Day, who have been around 25 years, being behind someone like Skrillex. Have you been to a Green Day show ever? It doesn't sound like it. Just because they played it "safe" with the Trilogy tour, it still blows most artists out of the water, especially when they're known to play some of the longest shows in rock and roll. And their last few tours, they were ready to play anything along with the hits. Hell, they randomly played Dookie in it's entirety this tour out of nowhere. It's a shit list. Green Day deserve a much higher spot, and that's why they got shafted. Putting them that low makes it seem like an afterthought, like they don't deserve a spot at all, which they totally do.

Green Day wasnt shafted if they were they wouldnt be ON the list at all

Bullshit list. I stopped reading when I saw Metallica got that high. -.-

Honestly, with the lack of press they've gotten lately, I'm just happy they're on the damn list...

Am I missing it or is Coldplay really not on this list?! They must not have seen them on that Mylo Xyloto tour...that was the most grandiose shit I've ever seen. Like those goddamn blinking bracelets were incredible.

Whatever. At least the Foos got a respectable position

Well this is just ridiculous. Knowing how much Rolling Stones consider Green Day I wouldn't have bet to see them in the top 10 but...#48 is seriously ridiculous.

And anyone who went to a Green Day concert, fan or not, can confirm that.

Yes, I've seen Green Day three times. I have some idea what I'm talking about. Are you just defining young bands as those who have been out less time than Green Day? I left out M&S because I think they're shit, but Arcade Fire and Black Keys have been going for over 10 years, My Morning Jacket for 15. Hardly "young", these bands have built pedigrees on great live performances. Particularly Arcade Fire, I wonder whether you've even heard them because otherwise you wouldn't use them as an example, easily comparable to Green Day's live show.

The article is about bands right now, not their last few tours. Given that Green Day hasn't done anything new for this tour beyond get sober I think it's completely fair not to rank them with some of the artists that are higher up. Were this 2009/10 it would be a different story but take the fanboy glasses off and see that there is a lot more music out there.

It's quite clear to me that they had a list of legacy artists and a list of current artists and they loaded the best legacy ones near the top which is why Green Day are near the bottom. It's an arbitrary list, but they got the no.1 spot correct.

Slightly upset that Biffy Clyro didn't get a look in. Should have gotten in on the strength of their Wembley gig a couple of years ago alone.

Does that include the Emirates gig where they did set an attendance record?

When was it when they played Dookie in full??

Attendance doesnt really mean much Vanilla Ice has once performed for 80k people doesnt mean he'd be listed as best live act...

Lets be honest the trilogy tour (which is what they were being based on) isnt all that mind blowing same set lists except for the two shows they did Dookie...

Overall when the list is best live act period they should be in the top 10-20 but this is a best live act currently...

yes :P

and these shows in any apocalyptic day is enough to get them a spot much higher up.

May be based on the current scenario they dont deserve to be in top 10 or 15.But they surely deserve a much higher place.

Dude i didnt mean that  it was just a reminder kinda thing. :P

Man we all sound really douchey when we're saying this, but it's just true that Green Day should be way higher on that list. And I'm not speaking as a fanboy, they're objectively really fucking amazing live. I know so many people who don't even like Green Day but have to admit that a Green Day show was one of the best concerts of their lives.

But I guess Rolling Stone put a lot of bands in there just because they're hyped right now. For example Mumford & Sons, seriously? I'm not hating on their music, I actually like them, but from what I've seen from their live shows they're absolute snoozefests. And the crowd is dead.

I'm sure if this list was made during the 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, when Green Day was a lot more hyped than right now, they would be way higher placed on the list.

I knew you would mention Biffy Clyro. But yeah, I agree. I think they're just not popular enough for Rolling Stone.

Yeah true. It's probably because they still haven't broken into America, despite being huge in Europe.

I wonder if any of you who complains have seen the other bands live. I suspect you're all biased beyond all measure.

Rolling Stone, why are being so stupid lately? First Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and now this?

I wonder if The Rolling Stones guys have seen the bands live. I suspect they're all biased beyond all measure. ;)

Mumford and Sons higher than Green Day? Seriously?

Every performance I've ever seen of that band has bored me out of my fucking mind.

This. Springsteen at no. 1 is an obvious, easy pick. The guy's been playing legendary live shows for decades and still sells out stadiums like nobody's business. In other cases, like the Robot Stones, Tom Petty and Neil "not needed around, anyhow" Young, the high placement on this list is clearly in deference to the fact that they've been doing it forever and are still able to put on a decent show. To say with a straight face that Neil Young puts on a better show than, for example, the Foo Fighters (who are practically a legacy act themselves at this point) or Muse shows that clear bias towards older bands in the top ten. To leave Roger Waters off that list entirely is a head-scratcher; he's definitely a legacy act, and I'd wager that anyone who has seen The Wall Live walked away in awe of the man and with a new interpretation of and respect for the Pink Floyd masterpiece.

I still want to see a Springsteen concert. Like, desperately. I remain crushed that I didn't get a chance to see them with the Big Man on sax.
