Todd Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 My stepmom changed the station when Oh Love came on cause 'that song sucks' despite knowing it was Green Day's new song that I was waiting anxiously to hear. Needless to say, I'm still pissed about it and I don't care if three more years pass by, I will never forgive her for that.
Chelsee Angevine Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I was a fan on hiatus since 2008. So to me, Uno, Dos, Tre, and 21stCB all came out in March of this year and I barely even know all the lyrics yet. I haven't even begun to discover B-sides and things like the 'Tubs yet. I do not envy all you guys.
whatshername0303 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I remember it. I listened Oh Love many times this day. Time flies!
SEAtacticsFTW Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I remember I was watching The Walking Dead then I refreshed Youtube and Oh Love was there. I thought it was the best song of the year until the next day when... yeah. I still think Oh Love was great in the instumentation part of the song, I just didn't like the lyrics. I also remember watching the announcement video with Billie in it.
MaraGreenDay Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Omg, already a year?!! I remember i was so excited to hear this song, i didn't have internet in my house back in that day so i went to a cyber-cafe and i put the video and i was crying cause it was so emotional that after a long time of waiting, we finally had the first song from those three albums It was a shame the lack of promotion, but of course Billie's health was first. I'm just happy that i finally can hear those records without being worry about him. The feels everytime i hear Oh Love i really love that song
ollhjr Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Miss those crazy GDC days! I remember the amount of time that was used to debate the meaning of the Oh Love video along with the 30 seconds to a minute clips that released in the spring. This was all nice and good for me since this was the first album/albums that I got to see the whole creative process from beginning to end since I became a diehard Green Day fan after 21st Century Breakdown came out. I also remember people being pissed that Uno didn't sound Dookie enough to their liking, although I was a hypocrite thinking Dos was going to sound like a Foxboro Hot Tub album or at least 11-12 tracks that sounded exactly like Mother Mary and Stop, Drop, & Roll. Maybe the year flew by because when Billie entered rehab, we wanted the time to fly until he was better and can get out and tour/promote... I'm still waiting for the promotion though... Also, I remember when the Oh Love video came out. I didn't have internet at the time and I went to my aunt's house and used her wifi with my mom's cellphone (I don't one of my own) and watched it being like "WTF is this???" at the girls and the nudity. (Why does is seem like a lot of videos since then have nudity? Like Blurred Lines, FOB's Young Volcanoes, the new Justin Timberlake video, etc.) Man it is Green Day being trendsetters once again only instead of new bands coming out that sound like them, they influenced these artists in their "artistic" vision for music videos (boobs). The same could be said with releasing more then one album as well with Justin Timberlake releasing another album sometime this fall and the rumor that Kanye West could release another album yet this year. I agree with you on the whole promotion thing. Although even if Billie was completely healthy I'm not sure an all out tv blitz would have done much of anything in regards of getting more of the masses attention to the trilogy. Because if I remember with the Billboard article they wouldn't have been able to do much of a media blitz for Dos and Tre since they would've been on tour. So those album sales would've fallen off the wayside as they did anyway, but of course I would've liked to have been proven wrong. There just hasn't been much of a rock presence lately in popular music/Top 40 as of late. It seems like country in the past few years have filled that void in which rock hasn't been. The only way it seems for a rock band or how I define rock is by releasing some version of a ballad in order to get a hit, thus Oh Love was released first. Although as much flack that song got I still enjoy that song as much as I did on the first listen. In regards to the trilogy overall it reminds me of an enlarged version of Nimrod in the sense that the type of music throughout the 37 songs are all over the place. That overall the trilogy has songs that has elements of a younger Green Day, where they are right now, while also giving us a glimpse of where they are going. I'd like to think that after the release of the next album or two we can look back at the trilogy and see what they were trying to get at back in 2012. All wishful thinking and contemplating. In regards to how this really has no impact on how the masses view them. Sure it was a disappointment commercially, but it seems like most people mention either 1994 or 2004 with little regard for anything before or after those years. This could work out perfectly next year for the two anniversaries as long as whatever they do to commemorate those two albums gets enough promotion. In the end with everything that happened with Billie and the boys last fall I see the trilogy era as one that got the band stronger both personally and professionally. I know that I'll take the loss for a lack of commercial success for whatever twists, turns, highs, and lows Green Day will provide for years to come. Although in the end I can't complain about the trilogy era because I have 37 solid new Green Day tracks that have been a part of and will continue to be a part of the soundtrack of my life. Plus they finally made Jason White an official member!!!
WhiteTim Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I wouldnt say Justin was inspired by Green Day to split up his album in two parts
ollhjr Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I wouldnt say Justin was inspired by Green Day to split up his album in two parts Very true. I would be surprised if Justin Timberlake would be inspired by anything Green Day has done, although in the new song he does with Jay-Z on Jay-Z's new album they sing a bit from Smells Like Teen Spirit (That's a discussion for another place and time.). It is more just coincidental timing then anything else.
BJA TC MD Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Wow, it's already a year, it doesn't feel like it at all! I remember staying up til 11pm, the night before school term started, waiting for Oh Love to come on the Internet. That was one of my favourite moments of the year. Unfortunately, I doubt many non Green Day fans will remember the trilogy, simply due to a lack of promotion. Then again, I'm glad Billie Joe was able to take some time out, and get better, instead of trying to promote the trilogy and let his issues get worse.
Insomniac1984 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Well, what a year has been for Green Day... At least I'm happy they're back. Also, I like the idea of Mike and Tré getting more attention from the fans (Y'know? The "instagram thing"). Sometimes, in the past years, it was a little bit unfair just to see that the fans were paying attention just in Billie. It was good that Mike took the role as "the voice" of the group on interviews meanwhile Billie was in Rehab.
WestboundSign! Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 A year? That is an absolutely crazy thought to me. A dive back into that time would somehow be really cool now, haha!
Drop Dead Hideous Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Still listening to the Trilogy albums like it was released today Fuck, time flies.....
raul.stanciu Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Dammit, it's been a year already. I like the trilogy a lot more than 21st Century Breakdown, mostly because it's less pretentious and punchier. (even though the records are rather childish compared to most of their material). I'm happy they tried to make a change in sound (the whole vintage twangy guitar), even though it doesn't help some of the heavier songs. Also, I've seen them for the first time on this tour, so I guess Uno! Dos! and Tre! will mean more to me than others. Still, casual fans and non-fans will probably remember this for the meltdown at the iHeart Festival more than the actual content. Oh Love is the only "hit" and it will probably remain on the setlist from now on (a couple more tracks might pop up here and there). I understand Billie might not be willing to play some of the hard party/overly sexual material from these records at the moment, but, still, they've been playing the same 6-7 songs and maybe that 1 surprise track for fans (Nuclear Family, Let Yourself Go, Missing You, Carpe Diem, Rusty James, Fuck Time - all these have barely been played). It would be nice to embark on second legs for Europe and US in the fall/winter, as well as other continents and switch to other trilogy songs. I hope they'll release a DVD where they'll actually play more than 6-7 new songs and not the same stuff as on Bullet or Awesome. Regarding the re-release of Tre! and finally! Cuatro!, I can't wait to see that movie as a whole. They rushed the release of Tre! and it sold less than Kerplunk. Also, an actual video for another song and a proper single release would benefit both for sales and the fans (Personally, I'd like to see Walk Away as a single, because it's one of the more mature songs).
newsflash777 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I still think releasing three albums so closely together was too much to take in for me, personally! I'm happy they definitely did something super unique because they're fucking Green Day and they can, but I'm still trying to process some songs off of Tre Crazy that it's been a year, though.
The Platypus! Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I think the Trilogy was a success to the fans. Ok it didn't propel Green Day it to world fame as American Idiot or Dookie did but some great songs came off those records that will be staples to their setlists for a long time. Also Green Day releasing 3 albums in 4 months not many if any bands can ever say they have done that. I love Green Day for doing it even though they may not have got the success they wanted from the albums. I love them as I'm sure many of you do! The albums could have been terrible but they toured and I got to see them nothing will ever beat that. (Except another tour!)
R_Z-Log Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Definitely a crazy year for the band, and the fans! As far as impact for non-fans, I'll go with the previously stated opinion that it will have ZERO impact. I literally have no friends that listen to Green Day (sad, I know), and if it weren't for me endlessly babbling away, they would have no idea that they still make music. However, for myself the trilogy era might actually be the most impact I've had as a fan since 1995 when I heard them for the first time. I had actually stopped listening to them for the past year or so before Oh Love was released, and after BJ's meltdown/all of the chaos with the tour, I actually considered selling my tickets to see them in Virginia. Luckily, I came to my senses and went to the show and it literally changed my life. I connected with the band on a level that was about so much more than the music, and it brought back SO many feelings and memories from the past 18 years. It was like hearing them for the first time all over again, and prompted me to go back and listen to all of their music. But, like, REALLY listen. Listen to every word, and really EXPERIENCE the music more than I ever had before. Ok, I'm rambling now and I'm sure what I'm saying makes little to no sense, I wish I could explain it better, but it's hard to put into words so I'll just end now haha.
DirtyRottenForgotten Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Can't believe that it has been a year already. I personally really enjoy the trilogy and am really grateful that they gave us those 37 songs instead of making one album of their favorites from the bunch. This past year I feel like Green Day has become stronger as a band and have become even closer to their fans especially with the instagram accounts. Was great to see Mike be the spokesman of the band too for a while! For fans I think that the trilogy will be remembered fondly even if people didn't like it, it will still be a respected bold move on their part. As for the non-fans... Every person I have talked to lately had no idea Green Day had even released one new album let alone three and they are all shocked when I tell them about it. It was terrible that there was no promotion for the albums but I also feel like even with promotion the non-fans would still not know much about it. Off the albums the only songs that I could see as hit singles on the radio were Oh Love and X-Kid and both of those hardly got any radio play. If the casual radio listener didn't take to those songs then I don't think they would have taken to the trilogy at all. 99 Revolutions could be a big single though given the proper promotion and air play so we can always hope for that. Still waiting to see what was up with those remixes that Billie was working on a while ago!
Jason Fox Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Damn. I remember the first day I listened to Oh Love... which eventually prompted me to register here (After listening to Static Noise, actually). Then I remember going out to buy UNO the day it came out, I had to go after school... god good times.
Slave To The Network Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Wow! Hard to believe that last summer I was just clinging to that song after it came out because there was nothing else yet! I listened to it so much and was soooo excited! :')
AfterShock Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 07/16/12 - 07/06/13 is a year? who knew... If you read my post you'd see that I said almost a year, thanks for being an asshole about it anyways
99-revolutions Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Everyone knows the party analogy, Uno being getting ready to party. Dos being the party from hell and Tre being the hangover (and the most reflective). People have criticised the trilogy (mostly Uno) for having immature lyrics and so on. This got me thinking what if the trilogy represented three different stages of life? Uno- teenage years/early adulthood. Forming your own political opinion (nuclear family), infatuation (stay the night), Anger (kill the dj/loss of control), feeling invincible (carpe diem) and first love (fell for you, oh love. Dos- Mid life crisis. I can't really break this one up by song but it's all there. Temptation, depression, lust, breakdown etc. Tre- growing up for real/golden years. Looking back at your mistakes and laughing (sex, drugs and violence/walk away/Amanda), looking back at others (x kid/little boy named train), realising what's actually important (brutal love/the forgotten) and 'this is how I feel goddamit' (99 revolutions). I'd love for you tell me what you think, anything you disagree with or anything you'd like to add. I've spent some time on this so I'd love to get some feed back.
