InvaderPhantom Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 It's a pet peeve of mine when people refer to 1039/SOSH as Green Day's debut full length when it's actually 39/Smooth. Oh well. I know that some people dislike this album because of its low quality recording, but I think that's the absolute charm of this album. Back then Green Day wasn't a huge band with access to a great studio and the band didn't have that many skills yet and I love how this album completely represents that era. The guitars are thin, Billie's voice isn't that great, the drums are muffled and the lyrics are amateurish, but that's what I like about it. It really gives me the feeling of "Let's get a bunch of teenagers in a room and record the songs that they wrote in a garage". Kinda like Blink-182's Cheshire Cat or Sum 41's Half Hour of Power. My favorites are Paper Lanterns, At the Library, Don't Leave Me, I Was There, Only of You, 16, I Want to Be Alone and of course Going to Pasalacqua.
ANJI Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Wow 22 years! I was only 3 years old Happy birthday 1,039!
Hermione Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Whatever. Lol. I really hate that a compilation is more familiar to some people than the actual albums that the songs are from. But, then again, Jump Salty is a lot easier to have than all the EPs and comps that those songs were from. Just my OCD I'm with you. Their debut full length album was 39/Smooth and this is just a compilation album dammit, and Billie would certainly agree . I do like this compilation album a lot though
Fuzz Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I think people consider this the first because it's the most complete of their early releases.
The Governator Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 1039 smoothed out slappy hours is not a debut full length album. Why not celebrate 39 Smooth and the EP's releases? 1039 Smoothed isn't a studio album. It's not a debut either. What the fuck is this shit? Just a lame compilation with nothing new on it. Dude, calm down.
yuridookie Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Happy Birthday 39/Smooth, i love this fucking album
Todd Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I think we just generally recognize the compilation as the first album in Green Day's canon, because it's easier than an album and two EP's. Do you hear yourself? Because it's easy? That's cheap and cheating. One album and two EPs. That's not a lot. And the. One song from a compilation, which I just threw into my bonus tracks album on itunes.
alienlifeform Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I just think that consider 1039 as GD's debut album, would be the same thing as consider "maximum Rock 'n' Roll" as Nofx's debut album just wrong
_Greg Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 The guitars are thin.... It's not that the guitar is "thin" in a bad or unintentional way. Billie Joe loves Husker Du, and his guitar tone, especially on this album, is totally ripping off Bob Mould's super-trebly, buzzsaw tone in Husker Du.
Todd Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I just think that consider 1039 as GD's debut album, would be the sabe thing as consider "maximum Rock 'n' Roll" as Nofx's debut album just wrong GDA is supposed to help smaller GD fans become bigger GD fans. This isn't teaching them anything but lies. It's creating nooby fans, who are gonna be like "Oh yeah, 1039 was Green Day's first debut album"

You may be right, but your wording, it makes me want to ignore you.

Well at least he didn't tell anyone to fuck off like Billie would have Technicalities aside, I'm gonna be giving this album a listen later. Because of the new albums being out I haven't listened to any of the others for ages so it should be enjoyable. Also I really like the name , t's so silly and fun.
OhTheGuilt. Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Wow, well Happy birthday 1039.. gonna listen to this tonight from top to bottom.
The Grohl Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 It took me a while to like this album. Of course it's not their best, but I was really surprised that some fans believed that this was even better than Dookie. I do like the songs, but when I initially heard I thought Billie sounded so whiny about girls
musso_kn Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Happy Birthday 1039! You were the start of something beautiful.

(: Wish they played more of it live. Sometimes it seems to me like they choose too many popular/well-known songs. Happy Birthday 1039!
WhiteTim Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 If it wasnt for the 1039 comp I doubt alot of people would hear 1000 Hours or Slappy as they'd most likely be out of print...
Todd Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 If it wasnt for the 1039 comp I doubt alot of people would hear 1000 Hours or Slappy as they'd most likely be out of print... If there was no 1039, 1000 Hours and Slappy would be on itunes by themseles, and Reprise has re-released them on vinyl with 39/Smooth, and in the vinyl singles box. And they'd be on youtube of course
