Here is EVERY LAST FUCKING THING I CAN REMEMBER AT THIS TIME. ENJOY:

If I had to sum up the film in one sentence: Michael and Billie say cute and funny soundbites, and then you cut to footage of Adrienne crying

In the Q&A with the director/producer:

Producer said *not exact words*: "I just want to say that I've met a lot of rock stars and stars in general over the years, and they're not always what you would hope they would be. But with Billie Joe, what you see is what you get. He's the most real, honest, giving person. So I just want to let you guys know as fans that, you're rooting for the right guy. Everything that you dream in your head that you hope Billie Joe is, he is that. He's everything you think and want him to be."

- Wish there had been more footage of Billie in rehearsals for St. Jimmy, but there were some beautiful intense shots of him trying to act all stoic and silent and convince himself not to say anything and just act intense, which he said was hard for him because he's usually allowed to just go crazy and scream.

- There were pictures of him as naked cowboy on the stage, as a nurse, and also him dressed in what looked like some kind of sexy black and red lingerie dress, playing drums

- Also some hilarious footage of him just jumping rope before the show. Very impressive, continuous flow there.

- Billie randomly talking about how Facebook scares him because he wants to protect his family's privacy.

- Billie mentioned how families really do have to make a tough choice when they're going to see a Broadway show, if they want to challenge themselves by seeing a show with the "cold reality" of American Idiot or some kind of fairy tale that would be more enjoyable for them.

- Billie spoke very emotionally about how after getting famous, he hasn't had a lot of close friends or community (like he had at Gilman) because in the rock world it's very competitive and there isn't really that beautiful camaraderie that he finally discovered on Broadway. He said he didn't even realize how much had missed and longed to be a part of such genuine human relationships and friendships again, and you get the impression that this meant more to him than anything else in his career has.

- He mentions a time when he threw Twizzlers at the crowd and one of the producers basically told him not to do that again because it's distracting and on Broadway you don't do shit like that :P He also mentioned a time where he brought whiskey on stage and Michael had to tell him, no, don't bring whiskey on stage

- There was footage of some kind of cast + Billie + impromptu Foxboro Hot Tubs ish party in Oakland where Billie talks about how Adrienne brought a photo booth and he talks about how things got sexy in there for everyone, and there was a super fast montage with lots of pics of the cast, Billie, and 80 orgying it up and drinking lol. Also a shot of Mike and Britt. We've seen some of these photos before floating around online but there were a ton more.

- During the Q&A the producer mentioned the uniqueness of the Idiot family and how he's never seen a broadway cast with such a strong connection, which he attributed to the fact that 90% of the young cast members had been Green Day fans beforehand and so having Billie take on almost a fatherly role/mentoring them was a uniquely incredible experience for them.

- Producer mentioned Billie playing softball with the cast and how Adrienne would show up with milk and cookies

- Speaking of Adrienne, she was in the background of almost every rehearsal/Billie walking anywhere/doing anything  There was also a lot of cute moments of her cuddling Jakob in the audience at various stages of the production.

- A nice proud moment where Ollie was clapping for her son's Broadway debut!

- A quote from Billie something like: "The set looks really simple. People think simple is easy but, Elenore Rigby is a simple song, but I'd like to see you fucking do it."

- Room pretty much flipped a shit because the screen accidentally went to white static the very moment Billie came out as St. Jimmy on stage  Oooops. Oh well, we'll see it again.

- Cool footage of the cast on stage intertwined with the Grammys.

- They showed Billie producing the cast album in the studio and a lot of sweet moments with him trying to draw the perfect voice out of Rebecca by saying "do it one more time" a about thirty times  He tried really hard to get them comfortable because you could tell the cast was really nervous to be recording with Green Day for the first time, especially because this was fairly early in the process of their involvement.

- The footage of Billie as a kid: He sang a song from A Little Night Music and also "Kids" from Bye Bye Birdie. He was SUPER cute and during Kids he was wearing overalls and an old fashioned hat, as if he was actually in the play! Classic.

- Michael Mayer was HILARIOUS and he also sang a bit which was sometimes impressive and sometimes just funny. It was great to laugh at everything he did and said while he was sitting a few seats away from me

- A scene where Tom Kitt is playing piano and Billie and Michael and he are trying to sing "Give my regards to broadway" but they don't know any of the lyrics, so Billie is like "I have to google this now" and whips out his phone.

- Tom Kitt singing and arranging on piano in an impressive falsetto voice.

- Tom Kitt playing WMUWSE on piano and complimenting Billie how it reminded him of A Chorus Line. Billie talks about how having his songs in this musical really gave him a validation as a songwriter of melodies that he never felt he got from anywhere else [my reading into that: yeah, he's underappreciated for his melodies because of the nature of his music]

- Film used a lot of footage from Bullet in a Bible including some of the interviews from it.

- There was a TRULY touching moment shown from opening night where one of the actors, maybe someone else can remember his name (he wasn't one of the principals) is sitting on the stairs backstage with tears in his eyes because his dream that "I've been working toward for 30 years" of being on Broadway was about the come true. It was really moving to see how much this meant to the cast, beyond what it went for Billie. You could see just how much heart and work they put into every moment of prep.

- Billie Michael and co. WILL be doing a new musical together !

- Not a peep out of Mike or Tre.

- Billie mentions how his own journey to NYC kind of mirrored the story of the show, but he referred to "doing it right this time" which I understood to mean he was reflecting on when he went to NYC to WRITE American Idiot and got caught up in a lot of self-destructive habits, and how it wasn't a healthy experience, and how now being on Broadway and being healthy while there was a chance for him to redeem his previous journey to NYC.

- It was cute when everyone in the room clapped a bit when Adrienne first came on screen, and she was the last person thanked in the credits. Everyone loves that woman, good Lord. (Myself included)

- REALLY sweet moment when the cast was singing Last Night on Earth and Adrienne is smiling like I've never seen before and cries and taps Billie on the shoulder and he turns around and they have this moment and super cute kiss.

- Michael didn't tell Billie what song he was about to listen to that had totally different arrangements, and was like "you'll know it when you hear them sing" and there was a good five seconds where the cast was humming and Billie looked so totally lost and confused and then they say "I text a postcard..." and you see him nod like a little boy who finally understands what the hell is going on.

- Adrienne laughing and crying at everything.

Q&A:

- Woman in charge clearly wasn't a Green Day fan as she didn't know Mike or Tre's names and she couldn't remember the name of the "Saint" that Billie played in the show LMAO. However she was AMAZED by the fact that somehow we all sold out the tickets before they were even put on sale  And she said that Lincoln Center has never experienced something like that before which is amazing

Here's my shitty pic with Michael Mayer

It was such a lovely evening! The film was very satisfying. Not perfect, but very satisfying.

Questions welcome.
ALSO: Haven't had the chance to read GDA yet... did they mention the NEWS that Billie, Michael, and co. ARE PLANNING TO DO ANOTHER BROADWAY MUSICAL TOGETHER DEFINITELY? BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WILL HAPPEN SOME DAY, LIKE NOT JUST A DREAM, IT WILL DAMNIT.

Thank you so much for this review Heather!!!

Now i'm really dying to see this, can't wait to have it on DVD (i hope, someday)!

And omg, the thing about a new musical, OMG!!!! :runaround:

They said the October release would be 20 cities, they didn't say which ones. They don't have international distributors yet, but they ARE trying. They said the more people keep asking and maintaining buzz the better because then it'll show that there is demand for it overseas.

It was shorter than I thought though, there was more focus on prep for the initial opening at Berkeley Rep and ended a bit after some of Billie's prep to take over the role of St.Jimmy.

No not yet

I really want to see all the footage from Last Night on Earth, that Kiss should be the Green Day's cutest moment of the year

Posted

Yeah, there was A LOT of footage of the workshops that didn't involve Billie at all. Especially in the beginning. I wish there had been a bit more "fly on the wall" moments backstage but whattayagonnado.

Also note to TMan: They only showed Brain Stew from the Prague 1996 show.

When I was waiting to get a picture with Michael Meyer, someone asked him if the future broadway collab would be Green Day album related or not and he said no it's going to be completely original so who knows what it'll be

Sweet!!

I wonder if there's a possibility that it would just be Michael adapting These Paper Bullets to Broadway, or if it's a totally separate project. Mehopes BOTH

Just to imagine those scenes about Adrienne and Billie, omg, fangirl moment :lol:

This is so beautiful

There was a lot of cuteness going on the whole time, I can't remember. Footage of them walking into theaters holding hands and just generally happiness, it was all sweet :)

did they say it was going to be an international release in theaters?

Posted

Now that I think about it, they showed when Green Day and the cast performed at the Grammya, but they never showed or mentioned the Tonys. Damn wish I had thought of asking at Q&A

Posted

So Heather pretty much covered it all....

As for the Broadway Idiot theatrical released... they said it was gonna be in 20 or so cities, and it would be released on October 11th.

But yeah. It was all so amazing. It was great seeing how something incredible came to be.

One moment I forgot that I really loved: Billie warming up singing Are We the Waiting to an empty arena, wearing a large blue sweatshirt. He sounded amazing and I really miss that song. It was cool to see him sing such an anthem to nobody

did they say it was going to be an international release in theaters?

No, they didn't, and I'm going to guess that it will just be American cities. However, a wonderful fan during the Q&A said that there are thousands of people all over the world who are dying to see this, and what can you do for them? And they said that that's where our own advocacy really comes into play, we have to kick and scream for what we want, and that's how distributors take notice. I think the DVD was in mind for international audiences who likely won't get to see it.

I don't think Toronto would be out of the question. Right? It often gets perks that Americans get

Posted

Since I'm assuming they obviously won't screen it in Brazil I'm really hoping for a DVD release soon. I'm fangirling over scenes that I didn't even get the chance to see yet! :runaround:

Btw, thanks a lot for the review!

OMFG

Oh, my bad, I forget about Canada being "international." I was thinking Europe/Asia. Yes, I think that would be reasonable especially considering Toronto was included on the musical tour and is such a major city.

OMFG

How did I know that would be your one takeaway?

:P I wish I could describe it in greater detail. It was like a black corset with red lace ties or something. I saw it for a split second so I actually don't even know what I saw  Looked like something Adrienne would wear in bed

Another thing I thought was really interesting from the Q&A: someone asked about which footage the director chose to include, and he really emphasized that as a filmmaker he wanted to make a movie that obviously Green Day fans would enjoy, but also that other people who aren't fans could enjoy, which is why it wasn't simply filled with gratuitous shots of Billie as a slutty nurse backstage. [My words, not his] You get the impression Doug just really wanted to make a good movie for a wide audience. He mentioned showing the film at the Newport Beach Festival because Mike had "friends" who ran it or something, and he said NONE of the people who attended that were even CLOSE to Green Day fans, and he said they all loved it. It wasn't like an Idiot Nation behind the scenes to please the fans movie, it was definitely something that he already assumed fans would love, and wanted to captivate n00bs, theater fans, and haters as well. If it was made strictly for the hardcore fanbase, it wouldn't have ripped off so much BIAB footage or professional footage we've all seen a million times.

No not yet

I really want to see all the footage from Last Night on Earth, that Kiss should be the Green Day's cutest moment of the year

It was more like a mouth nuzzling of emotion than a kiss

Someone asked why no focus on why Matt Kaplan and Morgan weed were the only 2 not to go to broadway. They did not say this but the simple answer is Kaplan was to old to play tunny And Morgan weed tried to sue green day so why give her more 15 minutes of fame !

I didn't know about Morgan at all.... what was her character and why did she try to sue??

I thought the film DID address that concern a bit, which was indeed Doug's confused response. They did make a point of saying in the film how the transfer from Berkeley to Broadway required some re-casting because fucking Broadway, and that's when they showed us Stark Sands and all that (and described him as an "All-American badass" or whatever. ) And the movie obviously wasn't *about* that, it was quite a minor detail, so the fact they addressed it at all I think was complete enough.

Posted

Morgan was in the ensemble. Google her I'm sure you can find details on the lawsuit. I don't remember the whole story.

Just want to mention one more thing. For all of those people doubting Billie, have you completely forgotten this?! Just look at his performance here!! He did an incredible job on Broadway!

Yes, it was such great show. They filmed Billie Joe backstage getting makeup put on his face to play St. Jimmy and him jump roping during rehearsal. On Billie's debut night they showed him putting his shirt on and stretching right before he went on. He talked about how before his entrance he said to himself "What the fuck am I doing here?".

They filmed Billie in the studio with the cast of American Idiot during 21 Guns and filmed opening night at Berkeley Rep. There are clips of Billie as a kid in the '80s of him singing show tunes, but he never admitted to his friends he was doing it because it wasn't masculine enough. We saw that those black and white photos of the cast and Billie were from when Green Day started jamming with the cast one night, and that they were taken from a photo booth. Also rehearsal videos of Green Day at arena shows during the 21st Century Breakdown tour.

There's a lot of cool footage of Billie Joe performing as St. Jimmy and of him rehearsing with Michael Mayer, and you can see that Billie was nervous. Tons of footage of Billie walking inside and leaving the St. James theater. The Q&A was fun, they said there are plans in the future with Billie again on Broadway, and Billie Joe will play St. Jimmy in the American Idiot movie. As we left the theater we thanked Michael and Doug and told them how great the musical and documentary are.
